All Things Sandy Cohen Thread

Having a degree from Minnesota and Marquette means I would have Pitino and Shaka as my two college basketball coaches. I'd have no problem with that. 20-30 years of great basketball for both, hopefully! POLLYANNA!

Didn't Shaka get a fat contract extension last year? I thought he was secured at VCU until like 2067

Cool story. Bet GW would love to hear it.

Sandy Cohen what?

Shaka is the #1 candidate at every opening. I am still hearing Howland or Marshall, but could be wrong. Latest I heard about Shaka, is only a top six school opening?

Shaka at Wake? LOL.

And why would Shaka go to Marquette after their most recent coach, who was successful there, ran away kicking and screaming and was so desperate to get out that he voluntarily took a huge pay cut? I think these schools are just wasting their time. Unless you're on the Duke, UNC, UCLA, Indiana, Syracuse, etc., level, I wouldn't even bother. In fact, if you believe the rumors, he even turned down UCLA last year. And now he's going to go to Wake Forest or Marquette? Please.

Sorry for the exposition on Shaka on a Sandy Cohen thread.

I found this article about Williams:

Well I guess we are nearing our 1 year anniversary of the infamous Shaka thread... It's only natural that we'd resurrect the Shaka watch now.

Yes, having flashbacks! Those were some fun days.

Shaka to Marquette makes perfect sense. Hometown. Top-notch program with a history. He'll slide right in and be successful.

I don't know about perfect sense, but he could double his current salary, if he gets paid what Buzz was. Also the home state thing. But the new Big East isn't much better than the A-10 and Marquette doesn't currently have an AD. Not the perfect situation.

If the rumors are true, I just hope he doesn't convince Cohen to stay.

That's the concern. If it happens, I see our chances going down. 247 will be rats deserting a sinking ship.

This starts to remind me of how close the castaways came to getting rescued multiple times, and something always gets in the way.

If Marquette gets Shaka I bet Cohen stays. Shaka is a hot name around college basketball.

Shaka's agent must have as many media contacts as Fred Hoiberg's. There is a reason his name is connected with every opening. Not everyone is interested and most cannot afford him. Stay in Richmond where the risk of taking recruits from here is a lot less.

If Maquette gets Shaka, I expect Diamond stone to commit there, they were already considered one of the front runners before Buzz left

I hope Shaka stays at VCU. I'm sure Marquette will be an attractive job to a lot of coaches and they will get someone worthy of the Job. But as far as Cohen goes, if he's asking to be released from his NLI it wasn't just the school he wanted to go, losing Buzz was a deal breaker. Since we've been on him all year I would guess that the Gophs have a great chance at him. Hopefully this one gets figured out sooner rather than later.

the hometown thing might be over-rated. From what i have seen, the only time Shaka talks about his hometown is when he is bringing up the racism and poor treatment he felt as a kid.

6 schools from the A-10 in the NCAA this year too-- might be a better conference than the new Big East going forward

Oregon is a suburb south/southwest of Madison. It isn't exactly close to Milwaukee.

Guys, come on, we don't need v2 of the shaka smart thread. V1 was shaka to minn and v2 is reasons shaka doesnt go to Marquette...

I'm shaka'd out ....

He works for BrewCityBall.com, which calls itself "the online leader for everything basketball in Milwaukee." Someone tweeted back at him asking who his source is, and he tweeted back that he is the source. So I'm not sure he understands what a source is, so not sure I'd call this reliable

Yeah I'm skeptical.

For all of you that miss the whole richmond drama from last year, have no fear, its back again this year, just in a different city this time

"The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Monday afternoon on its website that VCU athletic director Ed McLaughlin and Smart had started discussions about the Rams program, and that he had not been contacted by Marquette for permission to speak to Smart."

This is so funny reading through the Marquette board, they are flight tracking and everything, its deja vu over there right now

Shaka Smart is legitimately the best thing to ever happen to this forum.

Cohen i don't think will be at Marquette next year regardless of who the new coach is.

I can't imagine any recruit turning down Shaka if they are already committed to Marquette. He'll infuse so much energy locally. He'll give UW a run for their money and us as well with our top recruits.
