Good luck to him. Beat the badgers

@SandyCohenIII: The visit with Coach Wojo was amazing. Can't wait to build a better relationship with him.”

doesn't sound like a guy that plans on leaving Marquette

Well, he didn't say "I remain committed."

Wojo is about the least impressive hire they could've made, IMO (a major D1 program is always going to get somebody with SOME redeeming quality, so don't tell me about all of his years as K's right hand man). If he stays for Wojo, he just wasn't leaving, period. And from what we had been hearing, that is indeed the case, he's just unlikely to leave.

Nah. Sounds like it went alright. Good luck to Cohen.

But what does the crystal ball say?

Cohen will be a Golden Eagle when it is all said and done...Wojo is an impressive hire and def knows what he is doing when it comes to recruiting. On to the next one.

Unreal. Just because you don't like Duke doesn't mean Wojo isn't a great hire. I've seen him in action giving demonstrations at coaches clinics. He is extremely high-energy/high-intensity and even though you evidently are not able to recognize it, Coach K is the winningest coach in history and has multiple national titles under his belt. That's not nothing. "The least impressive hire they could've made"...Get over yourself.

+1 The guy has never been a head coach, but he has some unique experience coaching the best of the best. Jay Bilas really speaks highly of him....

College basketball analyst Jay Bilas of ESPN said former Duke assistant Steve Wojciechowski is a good fit for the Marquette program.

Wojciechowski, 37, was chosen by MU to succeed Buzz Williams, who left to become coach at Virginia Tech.

Bilas played for Mike Krzyzewski at Duke from 1982-’86. He has undergraduate and law degrees from Duke.

“I think he fits not only Marquette, but fits that city because he is a blue collar guy,” Bilas said during a telephone interview on Tuesday. “Nothing has ever been given to Steve. He’s a humble guy but he is really accomplished.”

Bilas said Wojciechowski has operated as a head coach in some ways, but without the title.

“At his age, I can’t think of anyone who has more high level experience than he does,” Bilas said. “He has worked with the Olympic team. He was basically Mike Krzyzewski’s top assistant . . . . Eight years with the Olympic team. He has been every day to practices with LeBron, Kobe, Wade, those guys, and commanded their respect. I have been to some of those practices and he really did an amazing job on the floor every day.

“He’s a really good competitor,” Bilas said. “He’s an excellent X and O coach. He relates well to everybody. I think the fact that he competed at a high level guard helps. He has coached big guys. He is certainly not one-dimensional. He has seen the game from every angle.”

Bilas said that Wojciechowski, in his role as associate head coach, had significant responsibilities for Duke.

“He’s been relied upon by Coach K for years,” Bilas said. “He deals with his assistants as co-coaches. They are not just assistants. For several years now Coach K has been fully engaged but less hands-on in the drill work. So the assistants do that. Steve is about as hands-on as it can get. He’s really good.”

Lets just be honest, he didn't get the job because they settled. Had they settled we would have seen a Wardle or something similar with a alumni flair. He's a good hire, and the jury is out on whether or not he'll be a good head coach.

I like the hire because it is right out of Teague's playbook. A young up and coming coach with a lot of experience at a blue blood program. If Pitino hadn't coached at FIU for a year, he would have had about half as much experience as Wojo. I put them in the same class of hire.

Agreed.

I stand by my statement. They weren't going to make a "bad hire" -- there are great coaches out there who have had substantial D1 success, who don't even have jobs right now. So no matter who they hired that person was going to have his positives that you can cite at this point in time. My point was that, among the names being floated around, and the people (like Cuonzo Martin and Shaka Smart) who apparently turned down the job, Wojo is not one where you'd say that all the recruits automatically are going to stay. I'd say he's a TBD hire, a lot like Pitino. Which, again, IMO doesn't make it automatic recruits will stay. I'd have been more impressed with Howland, though I can understand them wanting to avoid a potential Tubby-like situation.

I would add, the jury is still out on the extent to which K's assistants can parlay their Duke success to their own programs. Amaker and Capel failed, though Amaker is coming back at a mid-major type program. Dawkins inherited a good situation and nearly got himself fired 5 years later. Collins has had a somewhat promising start, but obviously too early to judge.

Cohen will likely stay because people have been saying all along that staying close to home is top priority. (Could teach the MN kids a thing or two).

You can't miss what you never had. If he sticks with 'Quette, I hope he and his new coach make life miserable for the red weasels.

Wojo is about the least impressive hire they could've made, IMO (a major D1 program is always going to get somebody with SOME redeeming quality, so don't tell me about all of his years as K's right hand man). I would argue Collins was above Wojo in the pecking order when he was at Duke, so really Wojo's only been first mate for a year, but than again Pitino wasn't experienced and he's doing a good job

I guess it's a good sign that he didn't re-commit right away?

The longer the better. He can't wait too long though or there won't be any offers left. Lucky for us we have a plethora of offers available :)

@GophersNow: No surprise “@nickjj42: “@WisBBYearbook: Sandy Cohen will be a member of Steve Wojciechowski's first recruiting class at Marquette.”
