All Things Royce White Thread UPDATED 10/25: Royce cut by 76ers

Wake up boys. White has a fear of flying . He refuses to attend camp until he gets a travel deal done. I do not dispute his fear of flying however he did fly with the team at Iowa St. If he was not scam artist he would refuse to play NBA ball due to his uncontrollable fear of flying. VERY SIMPLE SOLUTION to his horrible ailment QUIT THE NBA! Even you geniuses know that NBA means lots of air travel PERIOD! Royce CHOSE to fly when he CHOSE to Sign with NBA. Royce is a scammer for not showing up for camp per the contract he signed! His FEAR of flying did not stop him from signing a contract and Collecting a signing bonus DID IT??? He is a scammer and you are marks for buying into it. THESCOUT!

He will not be riding a bus to all his games, get real! LOOK at a NBA schedule!

He seems to like the drama ie- The Truth about Tubby Smith video, etc. I question his honesty and he clearly thinks he is smarter than everyone else. He speaks well, but doesn't come off as above average.

Royce says he's able to fly, then he gets drafted in the 1st round and then when training camp starts he requires a bus or he's not coming to camp? He could have drove down to Houston last week and discussed to face to face, but he chose to go the social media route.

So he's jeopardizing a career in which he stands to make millions upon millions of dollars just because he relishes being a pain in the ass? If that premise is true than there is no doubt that he is suffering from mental illness. Either way I highly doubt his struggles are phony.

Not saying it is true with Royce, I really don't know, but people risk careers worth millions of dollars all the time for stupid reasons. Pacman Jones risked millions simply because he relishes strip clubs. The entire Detroit Lions roster risks it because they relish marijuana. I don't get it, but it happens. Football coaches risk millions because they relish riding with co-eds on their motorcycles and the list goes on.

I'm guessing Kevin has been on the phone with Freddy; "What the _____? You told me he was okay to draft in R1!"

Then thinking- *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#, even my entire staff told me not to draft this guy!

Anxiety issues\Panic attacks...not good. With Meds and therapy I'm still not sure how he will be able to handle the stress of the NBA and all that traveling. I'm thinking he will choose a more comfortable stress free path in life and his time in the NBA may be short.

Good points; the meds dull the sensations which in turn will likely detract from performance or, at a minimum, reflexes/reaction time. Been there, done that, though not quite to the point of actual attacks

I've dealt with a panic/anxiety disorder on and off for over 12 years. I highly doubt the stress of the NBA is a problem for him at all. I work in trading where one bad move can cost 100s of thousands of dollars, but I'm focused at work and know what I'm doing. It just never comes up. My anxiety mostly flares up in innocuous situations like FLYING or taking the train to work. I'd guess Royce is the same way, judging from his play at ISU.

What bothers me the most about this "travel arrangement" is that it's exactly what he SHOULD NOT be doing with an anxiety disorder. Avoidance just makes anxiety worse. He needs to get on that plane and live his life exactly as everybody else on the team. It might be difficult for him at first, but if he flies 41 times this year he's just going to get used to it and not be (as) anxious anymore.

He's young, it'll take some time for him to figure out what works. It worries me that people are willing to bend the rules for him, as that's not going to help him overcome the problem. I wish him the best, it's tough but I think he'll manage.

tons of people with anxiety show up for work and do not whine about. You would think he has terminal cancer the way some folks around here are bleeding for him and buying into his game. White will fiqure out a way to contol his anxiety as soon his 7 figure contract shrinks to a 6 fiqure contract.

Seriously? You don't understand Anxiety at all - Your a complete moron!

If he really does have the anxiety problems, I do feel bad for him and hope that he gets them taken care of. I wouldn't wish health problems on anyone. However, health problems or no health problems, Royce is not a good guy. He was a thief and someone who violently assaulted a security guard half his size. Those were not the stupid kids being kids crimes (like marijuana use or underage drinking) where the only victims are himself and the embarassment caused to those associated with him, there was someone who was the victim of an assault at Royce's hands, and people who had their stuff stolen by him.

Couldn't they just drug him before every plane trip like they did with B.A. Baracus?

Get over it. He didn't go to Minnesota. I don't think you or I know if he is a good guy. You don't feel bad for him so knock off the b.s.

The girth of [my request] was, 'Can I travel by bus to close enough games?'"

LOL @ "my request". Let's be real, ESPN.

"My demand... or else I'm not playing!"

More at play here than GAD.

+1000. Once you engage in avoidance, it spirals from there. I am a Managing Director at a Fortune 100 firm, and to this day, it is a struggle to manage it in certain situations. That being said, once you have the coping skills, it can be done.

Flip said the same thing on KFAN this evening. He also said he would need a reworked rookie contract to allow this and if he was coach he wouldn't do it.

You are spot on. And Myron was correct at the end of the story, Royce is close to being out of the league if he pushes this too far and better watch his step. I'm sure it's all calculated and he will either get his way or get to work before that happens.

Royce never had anxiety until he burned every fricking bridge he had in Minnesota. Anxiety didn't make him cheat on that test & get expelled. Anxiety didn't make him enroll at the defending state champions High School without so much as speaking with the Hopkins staff first. Anxiety didn't get him kicked out of the first two dorms he lived in in under 3 months. Anxiety didn't make him shoplift. Anxiety didn't make him jack the security guard for catching him. Anxiety didn't make him throw the ball at the back of DJ's head from behind & then walk off the court & abandon his team at Pulley. Anxiety didn't make him & his boys go to the dorms & steal a laptop. Anxiety didn't make him act like an idiot trying to impeded the police investigation. People have been giving this sociopath (There's your mental illness! With a healthy dose of narcissism & megalomania mixed in) second, third & fourth chances his whole life. Every transgression he's twisted to make himself the victim. He needs some tough love for a change, not another hug & more understanding.

I agree with your avoidance stance. I'm guessing Royce has had many things "go his way" in life because of his talent. He most likely has never heard the word no. I'll be honest, I don't believe a word coming from his mouth. He's been acting like an idiot for a really long time and he is acting like an idiot right now. Anxiety or not, he needs to take responsibility for his life and not have everything changed for him.

And more from Royce

Yet another case of folks bending over to accommodate RW. This guy is so used to everyone around him kissing his ass, he knows nothing else. Looks to me like the only folks who have ever practiced tough love on this overgrown toddler is Joel Maturi.

Question for you NateDawg: What is it about flying or riding the train is it that makes you anxious? Is it the thought of crashing? Is it the lack of control? What feelings do you get? I do not have any kind of anxiety, but do appreciate that it exists. I have never understood fear of flying, given the risk statistics lean heavily toward the drive to the airport vs. the flight itself. So it can't be anything "logical."

I love flying, I'm not scared of the flying part at all. I like to think of myself as unique, but it's pretty textbook. Anxiety disorders are exactly that because there's no logic behind it, the brain just produces adrenaline at the wrong time for the wrong reasons.

Flying and train rides are stressful because you're stuck in public with no escape route. Damn it, I'm freaking out but I'm strapped into a flying tube 7 miles in the air going 500 mph, where am I going to go?

It's illogical. The great thing about anxiety disorders vs. more serious mental illness is that it's very treatable with knowledge and behavior modifications.

With all of the excuses Royce has been throwing around, I think there's more going on than just anxiety. His enablers are just making the situation worse.

Same for me; it is about the escape route. To that point, I cannot see a Broadway show unless I am at the end of a row. When I am in a meeting or speaking publicly, I always need to know the route to the door. The underlying issue for me is a fear of getting physically ill (vomiting) in front of others. Don't ask me why; it has never happened....

I am the same way. For exactly the same reason. While going through classes as an undergrad I always had to have a seat on the aisle and know the fastest route out the door. Just in case I had to get up and leave in fear of becoming ill. Never had to leave a class, but I always thought about it. The brain is the most powerful biological machine in the world and we know just a little about it. No one here knows exactly what Royce may be going through, so how can we pass judgement?

*I am speaking in regards to Royce's issue with flying, not to some of his previous behavior.

Agree with all that you say; hard to pass judgment despite his prior behaviour
