All Things Royce White Thread UPDATED 10/25: Royce cut by 76ers

Give the guy a break. Absolutely stupid comments regarding his problems! As far as Mchale after the top few picks most are crapshoot. He might have screwed up the Wolves but Royce seemed like a good gamble at where he was picked. Mchale also picked or traded for K Love. Too much hate in this town for one of the best Gophers ever.

Royce now wants to bus to 'close' games - and he'll pay for the bus. Going to interesting to see what Houston does here ...

I dont think you understand how anxiety works...

Exactly, Gopher Gold. Anxiety Disorder is not an issue that should be taken lightly nor to be made fun of. Those that do those things are totally showing their ignorance and/or lack of caring about others.

+10. There is no light switch to turn anxiety on/off.

Before he’s willing to start training camp, Houston Rockets rookie Royce White wants the team’s permission to travel to some games by private bus, the former Iowa State star told ESPN.com on Wednesday night.

White’s fear of flying, he said, magnifies his anxiety disorder. So he’s asked the Rockets to let him use a bus for some of the team’s extensive road trips. White said he’s willing to purchase the bus and assume liability.

White, who missed the team’s media day on Monday and the start of training camp in McAllen, Texas, on Tuesday, said he hopes to reach an agreement with the team soon. He said he expects to join his teammates within “a week,” if talks with the Rockets continue to progress.

===

It sound more like a holdout. He will come to camp after the Rockets agree he can use a bus.

In his pre-draft interviews he talked about how he could & would fly it's just difficult for him, now after he signs a contract he needs a bus. I would be extremely upset if I was in the Rockets front office.

It was his anxiety that made him slam that little MOA security guard.

I wouldn't be. None of these issues should come as a surprise to the Rockets.

It is a surprise, they expected him to be there.

"It's not like I'm really nervous about getting on the plane," he says. "When I get on the plane, I'm a little uncomfortable. But I'm not panicking on the plane. It's preparing to fly — if I have a flight on a plane today at noon, I'm worrying from 8 to 12. Just an anxious feeling. That's the anxiety. That anxious feeling becomes overwhelming sometimes. You might get sick. You might feel drowsy. Any of those things could be a reality. It's not that it's overblown. There's some truth to the fact that I don't like to fly, but it's not like I can't fly."

He could have flown after his Minnesota workout back to Ames. But it's nearly as quick a ride in a car as it is in the air. He often gets in his car and drives when the anxiety hits, losing himself in music.

"I'm able to fly. I just prefer not to."

But it's nearly as quick a ride in a car as it is in the air.

Hmm. Driving Minneapolis to Ames is about 3.5 hrs. Perhaps 3 if you speed and don't stop. A flight is 1 hr. Perhaps I value 2-2.5 hrs. of my free time more than others.

Hmm perhaps you live at a private jet terminal, don't have to spend time driving to airport, going through security, waiting another 30 minutes while the boarding process, 15 minutes for the deboarding process and getting car, must be nice

All Ames has is a private terminal. Almost none of the stuff you mentioned applies. Nice try, though.

dpodoll, part of what you say is true. Therefore from start to finish, to drive the 3.5 hours directly to Ames timewise is about the same time as a flight from MPS to Des Moines, what with all of the pre-flight and post flight maze, then still get from Des Moines to Ames without stopping at a strip bar in North Des Moines or Ankeny on the way.

Well, if we're talking about flying to Des Moines and then driving, that's a different story altogether. I was speaking to chartering a direct flight from Minneapolis to Ames, something I think Royce White could probably afford if he wanted to purchase.

white did not have much anxiety when he beat down a 5'6" security guard or stole a laptop.Anxiety is being on the front line taking enemy fire not the front line of a NBA team with a 7 fiqure contract!

Again, you don't seem to understand anything about anxiety disorders. Not really surprising though.

I understand royce took a female intstructors lunch and tossed it in the garbage while at DE. I understand a scammer you do not. Funny Royce not showing up to camp revolves around future travel arrangements not anxiety about camp. White should pop a xanax and go to camp! SCAM CITY! THE SCOUT!

Typing before researching, but sounds similar to the Willie Burton deal.

It seems to me Houston should have shied away from a guy with an anaxiety disorder and a fear of flying unless they only plan on playing San Antonio and Dallas.

Anxiety issues\Panic attacks...not good. With Meds and therapy I'm still not sure how he will be able to handle the stress of the NBA and all that traveling. I'm thinking he will choose a more comfortable stress free path in life and his time in the NBA may be short.

Anxiety Disorder, Chronic Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, PTSD, all are serious mental health issues that afflict more people you know than you can imagine. Add to that, the stigma that "caring and understanding" people do not understand is indefensible. Add to that afflictions such as Down Syndrome, Tourrette's Syndrome, shyness, impotentcy, speech impediments, hearing disabled, sight disabled, bald headedness, cauliflower ear, runny nose, acne, and gazillions of other afflictions, and not a god damned one of us is perfect, even though some would like to think they are.

The worst of all of the people are those who judge others. They are the real problem.

"I know it will affect my status," White says. "It's a scary thing. All you need is 30 general managers to say, 'I don't know enough about this to take this risk.' Or 30 owners to say, 'We don't know enough about this to take this on.' And then you end up being out of the first round and out of the second round. Or you go late in the second round and go to summer league and they still have the ability to cut you."

If he was pick 31, he would probably be cut right now.

tons of people with anxiety show up for work and do not whine about. You would think he has terminal cancer the way some folks around here are bleeding for him and buying into his game. White will fiqure out a way to contol his anxiety as soon his 7 figure contract shrinks to a 6 fiqure contract.

That's an interesting premise. Perhaps you should present a short paper to the AMA on "Pay scale adjustment as an adjunct to the current known treatment of mental illness."

Perhaps I can sell you some swamp land in Fla at Oceanfront prices! THESCOUT!

Unless the individual doesn't actually have the mental illness ... which is what the scout is implying.

Regardless of all of that though, Royce White's NBA career will come down to one major question: Can he play basketball at an NBA level?

Simple as that.

I'm not directing this at you, as you are just stating the scout's viewpoint, but would he really be faking the anxiety issue so that he can bus to games? Who in their right mind would want to ride a bus all over the country? It just doesn't make since to me that he would be faking it.

He seems to like the drama ie- The Truth about Tubby Smith video, etc. I question his honesty and he clearly thinks he is smarter than everyone else. He speaks well, but doesn't come off as above average.

Royce says he's able to fly, then he gets drafted in the 1st round and then when training camp starts he requires a bus or he's not coming to camp? He could have drove down to Houston last week and discussed to face to face, but he chose to go the social media route.
