All Things RB Jeffrey Jones Thread

Using the cheesy term "uffda" in a sentence and checking Jeff Jones twitter account at 5am. That is strike 1 and strike 2 for you good sir.

lol I'll take both, fully expected that response but here's my Kevin Love-esque defense:

1-Twitter is my default go-to while I drop the Browns off at the Super Bowl and I have to be at work early in the morning on QTR ends.JJ was the first post in my TL and naturally I ended up on GH shortly after...

2-JJ is also a rare and temporary player follow for me while we're waiting to see if he's in or not. Even though I can't rent a car yet, following 17-22 yr olds seems a bit creepy nonetheless and it just has Dr. Don type vibes all over it... which is never good/big red flag (or is it????)

Anyways, I am fully aware of the possible PH connection, however I can assure you I am not staying up that late at night in my parents basement stalking HS kids like a certain mental patient to our south and it was nothing more than a bored guy sitting on the throne with **** else to do

and uffda is fun to say and everyone says it here all the time, haven't you seen either Fargo?

You must not have seen the most recent unemployment numbers for Minnesota.

I did. It's more complicated than the baseline numbers. Most of the jobs that have been created are part-time jobs. Moreover, those numbers are deceiving. It doesn't take into account for underemployment and the drop in labor force. Baby boomers retiring cannot explain away the entire drop in labor force.

Besides, if what you said is true, then the problem would still exist. Those kids would look for blue collar jobs, which also don't exist.

The current job numbers look similar to numbers before the recession. The type of jobs and opportunities available are markedly worse.

Thus, it's not college admissions standards being too lax. That's just not true.

What ever happened to taking a job "beneath you" and working your way up? I graduated in 1982 and did landscaping as my first job. Unemployment was over 10% and I did what I could to put food on the table. They saw I had a good attitude, worked hard and didn't feel "entitled" and they gave me some skilled areas to work in. Eventually those skilled areas got me a job in Finance. My degree helped, but it was not the ticket to getting a great job. I had to work (and at something that was beneath me). I was just happy to have a job. The workplace is falling all over young people that want to work hard and have a decent attitude.

Is there anything that has not been discussed in this thread?

Not true at all. Kids are working at Starbucks or any job they can get. Your scenario is one many wish they could encounter. The two recessions were not and are not similar.

Well, I'm feeling like I can now blame my parents, teachers, friends, mailman, garbage man, and too many others to name for the fact that I don't make a million dollars a year.

Sounds like July 10th is the date JJ finds out if his class scores will make him eligible or not. I might be an eternal optimist (dispite being a lifelong Minn sports fan) but I still think he gets in and plays for Gophers THIS fall.

Retaking two of the sixteen core classes could allow for a sizable shift in the ONLY GPA that counts with the NCAA. Turning two D+ into A- would be enough. With your college career in the balance? I'd bet that Mr. Jones is plenty focused.

You would think so. Although, you would think raising your ACT score from terrible to mildly less terrible would be achievable with a little focus. Especially if he has established some "good study habits" as we are led to believe.

This line of reason really bothers me. Just cuz an ACT score is easy for some, doesn't mean it is easy for others. AND, this is the important part, a higher score does not mean you are smarter or will do better in life. Life is so much more complicated than that. Let's all stop painting JJ as some dummy because of a GPA score or ACT score or because you think it would be easy to do better. It isn't fair. I should know. I had a high GPA in college (Eng. Degree) and a high ACT, but I'm not very smart.

Go Gophers! Go JJ!

It's nice to know that I'm not alone!

Very refreshing take!

Totally agree that there is way to much over simplifying and speculating taking place in this thread when no one really has any clue what they are talking about in regards to his situation.

And I also agree that what many may see as an easy thing to do (raising a test score, or GPA) may not be easy for others. I coasted through high school with a 3.5 GPA by basically just turing in my work on time and showing up for class. For others it is not that easy even if they put in lots of time studying and getting help.

I have no clue what JJ's actual intelligence level is, but I think the frustration for a lot of fans comes in when they look at the actual standards required to be eligible to play ball and they really are not that high at all. You just have to do ok on things like the ACT and have a GPA a little over 2.0 which in most cases should not be that difficult to obtain if you are taking care of business in the classroom.

It isn't fair to make assumptions about JJ but it also isn't right to blame everyone else outside of JJ for the situation he is in right now.

True! When it comes to college admissions, case by case is truly how it should be done. Most every case has some uniqueness to it. I remember taking the ACT MANY years ago. While taking the test, I was assigned a seat next to a young lady that I knew. Well she didn't know the meaning of the word omit. Ether that or an extreme case of nervousness. She whispered what does omit mean? I tried to ignore her, for fear of being dismissed from the test. Finally after about the tenth time, I blurted out It means leave out. I was surprised that the monitor only glanced in our direction, but didn't kick us out. Needless to say, it was very hard to focus when I had someone asking me questions regarding the test the whole time.

Getting back to my point, not all students have the same circumstances. I know of many students that (did then and now) work, play sports, and are full time students. I would think that variables like this have to be taken into consideration. I am not sure I have any Idea how much Jeff Jones has on his plate.

MNVGUY, I agree JJ has a unique set of circumstances. Can this nice young man overcome all obstacles and the pressures of being in the limelight?

It is what it is. Kids come to college from different happenstance in life. You may have the good qualifying GPA and ACT scores going into college and still not make it to graduate. I knew a few people in this category who partied themselves right out of college or failed in other ways. They had good HS background and well off families. It does not matter where you came from. If you do not have those study, time management, financial management, and focus skills dialed in, it is tough selling ahead.

Will it be better to red shirt Jeff Jones to let him focus on classroom and weight room work if gets final NCAA clearance? I honestly think so.

He will succeed IF he has the burning desire (a la Cedric Thompson) to overcome all challenges with proper guidance and mentoring. There will be pressures to play him right away his Freshman year.

Getting his degree will be a life changer for him and his family. IMHO, he came to the right place. Jerry Kill is a builder of men.

You also have to take in consideration the self-loathing, troll-ish behavior of a good chunk of so-called Gopher fans that inhabit this site. In their minds, every good player is a mental moron, every player that leaves was "run off" or had their scholarship "pulled," and the coaches are either idiots who can't count to 85 or evil.

I can't understand why they are here. Oh wait, "discussion".

Those people who act like they know everything really bother those of us who do.

Will we know on the 10th? 3 more days.

Even if we think we know on the 10th...he still has to get through the NCAA Clearinghouse which could take until fall into fall camp. Nothing is over til that fat lady sings.

I heard from a reliable source close to the situation that no one knows a damned thing.
