All Things RB Jeffrey Jones Thread

Thank you. That explains it. I'm slightly hopeful.

And he needed to improve his GPA by 0.2 right at the beginning of second semester so its possible that he may have already improved it by 0.1 or so and would only need to improve it by another 0.1 to get that 0.2

My understanding is that Jeff Jones grade problem is almost entirely due too his sophomore year. He's since developed adequate study habits, gets decent grades, but has yet to get out of the hole he dug.

Glad I didn't allow myself to get too excited about this kid. I knew it would be unlikely when all of his other offers suddenly disappeared as we approached signing day.

define adequate and decent. My guess is half hour a day and the occasional C+

I can only go by what his Coach said and the fact that the Gopher staff have stuck by him.

Those are what matter. Not the gossip of GH'ers.

What matters are the facts that Joe C, Doogie, Shama and Marcus have given us which is where most of us have gotten our ideas from. We aren't just making this stuff up.

You act like it is a done deal which it isn't. Still won't know for at least 20 days probably if he will be eligible or not.

Where do I find out where his summer school teacher lives? So we can have a healthy discussion?

But they start the gossip, and our GH'ers just continue to spread it, on and on and on.

Do you believe everything they tweet or say is a "fact"? Really?

Yes, i would consider those facts when they tell us what ACT/GPA he needs/ if he has achieved it and that he is taking summer school courses, two in particular. They don't really do that much speculation on the situation like some want to think.

Maybe I am naive, but the fact that he is still taking summer courses means that there is still a possibility. I mean why would he do it otherwise? I am still holding onto hope.

He enrolled in SS before he took the last ACT. It is possible he is in SS in case be raised his ACT 1, but not 2 points, but then didn't raise it at all leaving him no chance or a very slim one. I'm not suggesting that is the case, but it would explain a scenario where he is in SS without a chance to still get in.

Like you, however, I am still holding onto hope - for our team and for what is best for JJ in life. If those are the same thing then great. If not then I wish him the best of luck with his future.

Go Gophers!!

"Jones also is re-taking two summer school classes, which could allow him to replace two low grades from earlier in his high school tenure with higher grades. That would raise his GPA, but it’s uncertain if it would be enough to qualify. Summer school ends July 10.
The Gophers will be awaiting word from the NCAA clearinghouse.
Plan A is for Jones to qualify for his scholarship."

Sounds like he still has a chance to qualify if he does well enough in summer school. Very much in doubt at this point but anything is possible. Most likely he'll need to raise two courses by two letter grades each depending on the class repeat rules. I hate to say it but the chances of that happening look bleak if he can't deliver a mediocre score on the ACT. Perhaps he'll have lenient instructors. But then the question is will he be able to hack it in college? This isn't UNC, I think.

We'll be ok at running back but sure would be nice to have him. Rodney Smith is an underrated back. There are all kinds of ways to build winning teams.

Doogie said he only had to raise it 1 point. Everything we've heard has led us to believe it was either raise GPA by 0.2 OR ACT by 1.

The raise GPA by .2 bench mark was from a statement his HS coach made before signing day. It's quite possible, that that JJ is still able to qualify, especially if his spring grades were decent.

One way or another I can't wait until this is official. Will be nice to stop reading all the he need .1 or is .001 or maybe he needs to get an A in this class plus a C+ in this one or he could get a B in this class and maybe squeak by with a D...of course that all assumes he got the score he needed on the ACT....according to his best friends, girlfriends, former boyfriends, half sister who was in biology with him this summer he knocked his course work out of the part and should be suiting up for the Gophers this fall.

Sorry, it has been a long day.

I don't mind the stupid speculation of what he needs/doesn't need that's par for the course here at GH, we speculate. What I hate is the ignorant statements about how dumb/lazy he must be because it's so easy to do this or that. Or how easy it is to get a highschool education/cupcake major in college...

The lack of empathy is astounding, I might be just as ignorant for being surprised by some of the statements made.

empathy for the lazy?

Apparently the 247 guys just finished talking to someone very familiar with the situation and are saying its an all but guarantee that Jeff will be at Iowa Western for 2 years.

I love the official reference to "...talking to someone very familiar with the situation saying..." In other words, here's some gossip.

I suppose you never did anything stupid as a sophomore in high school. I did! I also didn't have great grades in high school. I did a stint in the Army, got accepted into CLA, got the grades to be accepted into Carlson, as a junior, and graduated from Carlson. So far in JJ, I see a kid that's was young and immature working very hard to get out of the hole he dug for himself, so yes, I have a lot of empathy for him.

apparently it's too little too late. I don't accept that every kid needs to make the same mistakes.
