All Things RB Jeffrey Jones Thread

Maybe I am naive, but the fact that he is still taking summer courses means that there is still a possibility. I mean why would he do it otherwise? I am still holding onto hope.

this. the clueless dolts in this thread purposefully acting like "chicken little" are simply just trolling for some reactions and to stir the pot.

I just have this to say about Jeff Jones. If he hasn't made it onto campus by now, I don't care what kind of football talent the kid has. Find a different place to start the college experience. Would love to have him on the team. But, it would be important for Jeff to put two strong academic years in before going to the U.

So to recap, are these still the options that have him in maroon/gold?

  • Gets admitted/scholy this fall. The GPA does the trick.
  • Doesn't get scholarship this year, but enrolls on own dime. Suits up Fall 2015.
  • Two years at JUCO. Suits up Fall 2016.

This is like the proverbial Minnesotan's revisionist history.

"We didn't want him anyway..."

If it plays out that the second bullet happens, I call dibs on him being on my intramural flag football team. Everyone else, back off.

He actually has been participating in captain's practice.

BS. We're not talking about the failings of Minneapolis public schools in general, we're talking about one kid who everyone in his community wanted to see him pass. We're not talking about bringing his math and science test scores up enough to be an engineer, we're talking about a measly 20 on the ACT.

It has nothing to do with his ACT. His grades let him down. That's on him and his support system. I scored a 19 on the ACT and got into the U. I got straight C's graduated and have done just fine in my career.

Yep. Lock, stock and barrel. Thanks. Now that you have laid it out so succinctly and clearly, hopefully no more trolling idiots or self-loathing posters will unnecessarily keep this thread going on page after page with useless additional input or to cry over spilled milk/feel sorry for themselves in regards to the pretty clear facts of the situation. I am being serious, btw.

Read the posts on this forum. He doesn't have elite speed. He would do your team no good.

Of course it has "something" to do with the ACT as it is a combination of grades and ACT. There are plenty of kids at Washburn with a similar support system who got better grades and a better ACT score. Again, we're talking about the minimum standards for eligibility, not attempting to close the gap between Minneapolis public schools and Wayzata.

Which is why he is not the #1 back in the country and not the next AP because he doesn't have elite speed. No one ever said he isn't an absolute stud or isn't deserving of where he is ranked right now.

I'll compare my U of M diploma with yours. I still may only go to the MIAC games this year, which now qualifies me as a troll on GH. Oh well.

what?

Was just commenting on the fact that you quoted a post from page 2 of a 100 page thread. I spent probably 5 minutes trying to figure out what the hell was going on when you linked that.

This is what I would do. He has the talent to go pro and easily pay back the debt that he would incur in the meantime with paying out of pocket Plus it allows him to take part in practice I believe and weight room instruction to get better for next year.

Calm down, bro. Just being light-hearted.

From the strib article linked on page 101:
He wouldn’t be eligible to work out with the football team. But he could get his feet settled in college and work out in the weight room with an eye toward competing for the Gophers in 2015.

How do you raise your GPA by .2 in summer school of your senior year?

If you had a GPA of 2.0 and had 80 credits. Got an A in two 3 credit courses, your GPA would only raise by .13...

Unless he's turning two D-'s into A's, my guess is he's screwed. He must have a slight chance or he wouldn't be finishing the classes.

Scholarship students go through the normal admission process as well. The athletic department may have pull, but the kid still has to get admitted regardless of how he or she is paying for school.

Yes but we all know football/bball/hockey recruits aren't held to the same standards as everyone else. And the admissions department is pissy about this, too but they play along grudgingly. The Athletic Department has a hard enough time getting scholarship athletes in, I don't think they'd be able to do the same for someone that isn't even on the team. I just can't see admissions letting a non-scholarship, 18 ACT student in regardless of circumstances.

...Let's just hope his summer classes go well.

The U can choose to admit whoever they want and whoever they don't want. It is definitely in their best interest to admit Jeff.

Try explaining that to some of the prudes working at the U. Half the faculty would have the football team shut down if it was up to them.

If you like college football you should be applauding the NCAA and the U on this, academic standards are already far too low for athletes. Jones is a prime example of why there should be a non-academic minor league for football.

Well, for Jeff's sake, I certainly hope he can come to the U at some point. As a Gopher fan, I would absolutely LOVE him in pads next fall, whether he redshirted or is getting PT. As a fan of seeing kids get an education, I hope he is able to make something work that will get him admitted somewhere to get some college education and possibly graduate at some point, regardless of where he ends up. (Which is hopefully in Maroon & Gold)

Best of luck Jeff! Hope to see you in Maroon & Gold this fall!

If Jones isn't academically ready for the college courses at the U of M, he simply shouldn't be attending school here. I'd hate for him to have to either cheat in classes to stay eligible or to flunk out.
I'm really hoping Jones gets his approach to schoolwork figured out so whenever, or if he ever ends up at the U of M, he can succeed both on and off the field, like Coach Kill expects from his guys. I really hope he can still end up a Gopher, but if it's going to take a year or two in the grand scheme of things to get things figured out before he gets on the field for us, then so be it!

A cupcake college major is easier than high school. As long as you are sober enough and have the slightest bit of self respect to do the minimal work asked of you in some of these programs.

Right, but taking the individual interests in mind, I want Jones, like all our other athletes, to be successful in finding a good job after college should his NFL dreams not come to fruition. A cupcake major likely wont do **** for him.

I don't think so. My kid coasted through High School without ever opening a book. I was truly worried when he went away to college. He adjusted nicely, but I think it was an ADJUSTMENT. High Schools just push these kids through. College is a little more strenuous, even for the cupcake majors. I remember standing outside with him after the HS ceremony as his friends rolled by giving high fives - it seemed like every fourth or fifth guy he would turn to me and say under his breath "I can't believe they graduated HIM".

Same can be said high school grades and the ACT/SAT. Cupcake material for anyone who is college bound.
