All Things Henry Ellenson Thread

As tight as the Ellenson family is I would think WI and MN have a very good shot at Henry....MN even more. Not just because Wally is here but because his parents are very involved with all the kids...have one at the U and one in Bemidgi.....I like our chances that Henry signs here. Plus I have some faith that Wally will break out this year and surprise some folks now that he is healthy.

If we end up with Ellenson or Illikainen, I'd be elated. If we end up with both, WOW!!!

Go Gophers!!

per Shama:

Wally Ellenson, another sophomore forward for the Gophers, is the brother of Henry Ellenson who is ranked as the No. 42 player nationally in the prep class of 2015 by Rivals.com. Wally said his brother (Rice Lake, Wisconsin) has grown a couple more inches to 6-10. “He kind of wants to stop but I don’t think he has a choice,” Wally said.

He could definitely play center then. Which is good since we'll be needing a center with EE and Mo graduating.

I know nothing about Henry's game other than that he was what was considered a "stretch 4" at one point because of his ball handling and shooting skills. As he continues to grow/if he continues to grow is there concern that he sizes himself out of being a top tier B1G10 center a la Ralph Sampson? Ralph would have been phenomenal if he was a few inches shorter and a few steps quicker, like his dad was, unfortunately he grew into a centers body and got put on the block or on the elbow way too much.

I know this is pure speculation and no one knows the real answer, just was something that popped into my head when I heard he keeps growing and doesn't really want to anymore.

Not really pure speculation. I think it's accurate. Henry's made it known he would like to get out on the perimeter and not be a center. He's so big and strong and capable that of course you want him on the block at times, but he also is a very good perimeter shooter and can pass the ball, set mean picks up high, etc.

Playing him as a 'true center' would be an injustice and I think it's fair to say it would be a turnoff for him. A recruiting pitch of "hey Eliason and Walker will be gone and we need a center!" isn't a good one in Henry's case. He's versatile and dangerous from different spots on the floor - gotta let him do what he can do.

Seems like there aren't many big guys left who want to make their living inside, at least on offense. Seems like every 4 we're recruiting wants to develop his outside game.

If we picked up a bull body 4 (Reid you would be so perfect) who could play on the block, Gophers could let HE play a stretch 5 and create all sorts of match up problems. Add this to list of reasons why Reid and Henry would make a great team.

Ralph Sampson II was 5 inches taller than Ralph III (our Ralph).

Reid shot some 3's in pulley league and has been working hard on his outside and face up game. He needs it to make it in the NBA.

I could see he and Ellenson both moving inside and outside on offense, playing off each other, but on defense they'd have to work on their foot quickness to both be in the press at the same time.

Here's another point of reference re Henry: at 6'10", can he share attributes (I'm NOT saying they are the same player!) with Kevin Love: great outside shooter who creates match-up problems, and an ability to block out and dominate the glass? I don't expect him to have the passing skills of KLove, but do you folks who've seen him play believe he can develop a similar skill set at least at the college level?

I like your idea better

A Poor Mans Kevin Love?! I'll Take That! :D

Someone said they saw Ellenson's mom talking to Reid Travis at halftime yesterday (insert joke here). That coupled with this tweet leads me to believe Reid is coming to MN, and they talked on the plane about Henry following him in 2015. They are going to share a dorm, bunk their beds (Jarvis will sleep on the futon), and dominate the Big 10. It's done.

Mother Ellenson is a wildcard. I can never tell if she hates the current situation at the U or if she really likes it. Hopefully everything she was talking to Reid about was very positive. I think Wally really likes the U and appreciates the flexibility Pitino has give him regarding his two sport endeavor.

Can't quite tell if this is a joke or not...

They'll have so much room for activities!

BTW, why were they in LA? Did I miss something?

If Henry goes elsewhere, I really hope it's outside the Big Ten. I'd much rather him go to Kansas or Duke or something than MSU or Wisconsin. Nice having a strong conference, but playing against someone you had a really good shot at getting yourself is just depressing.

Aw, dang. I really don't like when he gets involved.

In addition to Izzo and his assistant (Dane Fife), Iowa had an assistant in Rice Lake last night to watch Henry.

We aren't going to get Henry. Can't imagine the family is happy that Wally is stuck on the bench, even though it's warranted given the quality of minutes he's given us.

No, we're not. It's been pretty clear since his dad leaked the story about the confrontation between Pitino and Wally. That's ok though. There are other big men that we have a shot at.
