All Things Gophers 2024-25 Schedule Updates

On another note UST is having a hard time finding their second pay check game against a Power 5 opponent… last I heard they had been turned by 15 power 5 teams those teams did not like the matchup.. they must of watched the Creighton, Cal and Marquette tapes… just Arizona ST right now…
St Thomas went to Cal and Marquette last year. Scared them both in close losses.
At Cal 71-66
At Marquette 84-79

Amazing progress on our non conference schedule. The question: Will our NET Ranking be above or below 200 when we complete the schedule?

Finish it off with @ Mizzou, and a good opponent at the Barn (or even at Target Center)...I'd be more than satisfied

with the proviso that a "good opponent" is willing to play a game at MN at a fee that Coyle is willing to pay - or to agree to a home-and-home series.

It's easy to say "let's play team X." but Team X has to be willing to play the game.

North Texas is a really good addition. Should once again be a top 100 team.

As for the Omaha game. I'm not from Minnesota, so I don't fully get the notion to play St. Thomas, and why that's such a big deal. Sure it'd be nice I guess for the locals, but there is no guarantee they will be a good mid major.
Minnesotas are amongst the most provincial people (they’re extremely sensitive) you’ll ever encounter - I am born and bred, spent my first 32 years there.

Looking like a solid non-conf schedule. Some creampuffs, and some major conference opponents plus some decent mid majors.

Ben was saying how tough this year's non conference schedule is..."we might play 3 or 4 NCAA tournament teams". (Are we still in the Big Ten?)
Meanwhile, the guy I lobbied to be fired at the helm of the Gophers who landed at New Mexico in the Mountain West is doubling down on his conference tournament championship and NCAA appearance.
They play #130 UTEP in a charity exhibition game to start the season. (Not Macalester)
Then #24 UCLA neutral site
#15 St Johns at Madison Sq Garden
#67 Arizona St
#50 USC or #38 Saint Mary's
#178 New Mexico St (their version of St Thomas)
#52 Virginia Commonwealth who won 24 games last year
The numbers are per BartTorvik
That's 7 pretty intense games in the non conference schedule.
His best two players transferred JT Toppin (12ppg, 9 reb, 2 blks, 1 steal, 62% FG%) and graduated J House best player. His third best in Mashburn transferred (2nd leading scorer) . Burn the boats.

Pitino has always scheduled pretty tough in the non conference. Much tougher than Ben has. Even though I do like the direction of this OOC schedule thus far. I'm not sure this schedule will be any better than any of the Pitino schedules. Especially if we get Wichita State instead of both Wake Forest and Florida. But this is a huge improvement over the last 3 seasons, no matter who we fill it out with.

There was a time in my lifetime that both UTEP and Arizona State were in the WAC with New Mexico - they are traditional regional rivals. The rivalry with NMSU is actually much uglier than anything we experience - like murders based on it, and this is within the last couple of years. I’m actually surprised they are playing that one. Also, the St. John’s one has an obvious connection….

ETA: murder in the UNM/NMSU rivalry

Schedule has been updated at top of this thread.

Gopher non-conference opponents average NET ranking currently sits at 211.75. Still waiting for ESPN Events Invitational 1st-round opponent & 1 other. This assumes the game @ Mizzou hasn't been postponed or canceled.
Ouch. Thinking we’re trying to run away from Mizzou? How far have we fallen?

Maybe they just don't want to come here. I'm not saying that MO is running from that game but maybe they're looking at better options for a home game.

Mizzou is in the best conference in the nation. If they looking for a better game, they are challenging themselves more than we’re used to here.

They did not.

But the average NET ranking number will get a lot better once we know the tournament opponent, especially if it's Florida or Wake.

I would think that either one of them would be the very likely first round opponent but especially Wake Forest. Florida is the home team of sorts (only two hours away) so they'll likely get the lowest rated team in the first round to maximize their chances of getting to the championship game.

Yep, I’ll be shocked if the first round matchups aren’t Florida/Wichita State and Wake Forest/Gophers.

Mizzou already came here (if that's what you meant that they wouldn't want to come here), beating us in come from behind fashion last year at Williams Arena.

Gophers now need to return the game and play in Missouri.

Sounds like that will happen in 2025 and likely not this year.
