All Things Class of 2015 Recruiting - Class Finally Complete? Nope Chris Obekpa visit

1-2 players in the top 165 is not putting the Gophers "in good shape". It might put them at the bottom of the middle tier of the conference in regards to recruiting. In a hypothetical scenario where we get two guys ranked outside the top 100, but in the top ~150 and two random players to finish out the class, we are not keeping up with conference opposition. Not saying that will happen, just that the bar has to be higher. Still very early in the process and, for reference, Jerry Meyer's infamous crystal ball pick of Ja'Quan Newton to Minnesota occurred on June 28th last year.

Personally, I don't currently expect the Gophers to outrecruit what I consider the top B1G teams (OSU, MSU, Mich, Wisc, Ind). We just haven't proven enough at this juncture to justify that expectation over more established programs. I think Pitino can get us to that level, but to put up better recruiting classes than them in Year 2 is a little much to ask from him in my opinion. I would be perfectly fine with landing a 2015 class with two guys in the 100's (such as Illikainen-100, Jarvis-115) and fill the other spots with guys like Anim and McBrayer. That would put us in the 4th or 5th range compared to the B1G 2014 recruiting classes shown below using the 247 player rankings.

Ohio State 16, 29, 57, 184
Indiana 20, 49, 364, 381, 395
Michigan 27, 121, 203, 326, 378, NR
Purdue 80, 120, 214, 288, 297
Illinois 42, 198
Michigan State 101, 148, 221
Northwestern 87, 211, 337, 367
Minnesota 172, 229, 267, 350, JC-23
Iowa 256, 286, JC-13
Penn State 173, 356, NR
Nebraska 192, 323
Wisconsin 149

Looking for two high major guys; hoping they get more.

What is remakable is Wisconsin doesnt recruit with those other teams. Their collective recruits are ranked low but Bo gets something out of them. On an interesting note, Illinois and Purdue seem to get higher rated recruits than Wisconsin yet they havent put too many quality teams together as of late. I agree that people may be expecting too much right now and I would be fine with those 2 top 100's plus some role players. An ncaa tourney win next year could help us make a move in recruiting for 2016.

I agree. As much as I hate Wisconsin, I have to give them props for finding the right guys for their system and molding them into very good players. I'm hoping Pitino can have similar success recruiting to his style of play, even if it means having to "settle" for 3* guys that fans aren't initially thrilled about. Obviously, it'd be ideal to get the 5* and 4* recruits every year, but getting the right 3* guys that are around for 4 years can be huge.

It's worth noting, however, that Bo's best teams - the ones that were true national title contenders - have had the benefit of a five-star player.

Just like last year's team (and next year's).

Yeah, Dekker is crucial to that team without a doubt. The surrounding pieces of primarily 3* players is impressive nonetheless. Looking all the way back to their 2003 class, it looks like Brian Butch was their only other 5* guy according to 247sports.

Ok I'm done posting about Wisconsin, one more positive thing I type about them may make me vomit.

Someone posted a question in a thread asking about the Gophers interest in Marshawn Wilson and if there even is any interest.

I don't remember reading a reply, but I am a big Wilson fan I think he is going to be a very good get wherever he lands.
I hope the staff is keeping an eye out and he is interested too.

On the Brian Butch note, is he the only McDonald's all american to ever redshirt? You get one guy who is 5 or 4 star, especially if he can get his own shot and demand attention, you can surround them with 3 star role players and have quite a team: Wichita st, Butler, Wisconsin, VCU all made final fours with very few highly ranked players. It can be done but can it be done consistently is the other question. I will take 1 to start with.

Best post ever. Really taps into the zeitgeist, the ennui, the shared experience.

I don't understand half that, but thank you. This morning was nuts! I worked out before work, was tired from that, sat down read some gopher news, got extremely excited at my desk, drank a couple cups of coffee. Had to take a 2.5 hour trip into BADger land via car which sucked as I was excited from recruiting news, tired from working out and not getting sleep due to my sick infant and I had to piss like a racehorse but couldnt stop because I was late from being so excited about recruiting.

Man.... what a day.

Thanks for posting this. I don't expect the Gophers to outrecruit the teams you consider the top B1G teams either, but Norwood mentioned many times that Coach Pitino was brought in to improve recruiting. I'd like to see a class that is demonstrably better than the Iowa's, Nebraska's, and Northwestern's to consider this 2015 cycle a success. It's interesting to see where 247 ranked Josh Martin, I would guess not too many kids with offers from Pittsburgh and Florida State were rated outside the top 200. I don't think we actually disagree to much, it's probably more semantics than anything. I wouldn't hate your hypothetical class, I would just be pretty neutral about it.

per Sid:

• ESPN recently updated their Class of 2015 basketball recruit rankings and Grand Rapids power forward Alex Illikainen came in at No. 90. The Gophers have been heavily recruiting Illikainen and have offers out to six other top-100 players: 6-10 center Diamond Stone (No. 3 overall, Milwaukee); 6-9 power forward Henry Ellenson (No. 5 overall, Rice Lake, Wis.); 6-8 small forward Brandon Ingram (No. 12, Kinston, N.C.); 6-2 shooting guard Jalen Adams (No. 33, Roxbury, Mass.); 6-8 power forward Tyler Lydon (No. 59, Pine Plains, N.Y.) and 6-3 shooting guard Kenny Williams (No. 84, Chesterfield, Va.).

That was such a waste of bullet point by Sid. So much outdated information. Kind of like his career, I guess.

This is probably a link/excerpt that you don't need to be posting Bleed... Don't need to post every gopher related link. Just the one's that have correct info and are relevant!

Akolda Manyang tweets:

Confident ASU leads for Manyang, but OU right there too RT @CoachBrimmer: @mjessenhoward heard he was OU today. Any update? Think OU leads?

@CoachBrimmer I don't think he'll hold out for bigger offers, but don't expect him to commit soon.

If you're bored at work on a Friday afternoon like me, feel free to check out some new videos of some Gopher recruits

Thanks for posting the video's. Trier looks really good on his video. Morrow, and Clarke also looked really solid on their video's. Hazard looked like he could shoot 3 pointers, but needs to add to his tape.

People sometimes rip others for giving opinions only on video. I think it is quite clear from the video how much better Trier would be in any uniform compared to Hazard.

It's strange that the nature of the players we're after this year are more in the consensus 90-150 range after pursuing the instate big 3 and top 40 guys like Perkins, Newton, and Whitehead. I wonder if it's the coaching staff acknowledging that they're better served recruiting in that range after whiffing on everyone last year or just a coincidence. FWIW, I would be ecstatic with any of Clarke, Morrow, or Dorsey, in addition to the MN guys. These guys are all pure athletes that are active on the floor, and I easily value 4 years of a guy who does **** over 1-2 years of a top 20 pure scorer because I'm more confident in the former's ability to become competent in a team offense than the inverse.

We spoke with a source very close to the situation about Jarvis' visit and were told "great visit, great chemistry"

Bummer

I don't think we were ever that interested in him.

I think we were interested just because of the talent however I think there are other positions that are of higher priority of need for this class that may have pushed him down the list a little bit. I don't think we will end up taking a center in this class and instead both Diedhiou and Konate will end up playing the majority of their minutes at the center position.

We were not interested in him. MadtownGopher is correct.
