A lot of recruiting nuggets from Matt Jessen-Howard:
- There’s been multiple reports that Minnesota might be on top for Kevin Dorsey. A source I talked with sat next to and talked with Kevin’s parents at EYBL. The source told me that the Gophers ARE in the lead for the four-star 247Sports Composite point guard.
- Keep an eye on Sacar Anim. His stock continues to rise. He’s an athletic slasher, and is extremely successful at taking defenders on one-on-one from the baseline. He can defend the two or the three. Anim’s ceiling is very high, and he’s putting up nice numbers…I’m surprised he hasn’t grabbed at least one high-major offer yet. He’ll probably pick up more high-major interest after the dead period.
- Sacar Anim still has the same funky shot, but he’s growing on me. His only offers right now are from Indiana State and Northern Iowa, but I believe that he’ll be a high-major player. He drives to the hoop exceptionally well and is a very good athlete.
- The Gophers are looking at 2015 Cretin-Derham Hall/Howard Pulley guard Joe Rosga as a preferred walk-on. Rosga is skinny but quick and has a nice shot. I’ve been impressed with Joe the last four or five times I’ve seen him.
- Originally, the media went crazy saying that Allonzo Trier had a lot of interest in the Gophers. Then, it seemed like everyone seemed to say it was all hype. I talked to him Saturday, and I think he’s legitimately interested. I asked him which schools were recruiting him the hardest, and Minnesota was the first school he mentioned. I didn’t even mention that I was a Minnesota writer; I said that I was from 247Sports and ZagsBlog.
- Allonzo Trier says he’s hearing a lot from Minnesota, Arizona, Memphis, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Georgetown, Maryland, Baylor, Kansas, Louisville, and UConn. Trier said he’ll try to visit Minnesota later in the process.
- Wally Ellenson told me he has an offer to high jump and play basketball at Texas Tech. Henry told me that he’d like to play with Wally, under the right circumstances.
- Chris Clarke tells me he took an unofficial visit to Minnesota. It’s a dead period, so he wasn’t allowed to meet with coaches. Students showed him around campus. Clarke says Minnesota, Tennessee, Creighton, and Virginia Tech are recruiting him the hardest. Clarke has a great relationship with Buzz Williams at Virginia Tech. He wants to play in an uptempo system, which he’d fit very well in. He is athletic in every way — straight-line speed, quickness, lateral quickness, vertical, etc. Clarke has a sturdy build; he has a nice frame, broad shoulders, and should be able to put on weight at the next level but is already very strong. He loves to attack the basket, but he’s not careless and doesn’t drive into double teams. He’s a competitor and loves to get up and down the floor.
- Ed Morrow is hearing a lot from Nebraska and Minnesota. Ed grew up in Nebraska and around the Cornhuskers’ campus, and his parents were student-athletes there. Morrow likes the Gophers’ coaching staff and style of play. He watched the Gophers win the NIT. In my opinion, Ed is similar to Rodney Williams. He has athleticism oozing out of him. He’s not a back-to-the-basket guy and never will be, but I think he’s better suited for the 4 right now than the 3. He’s a defensive presence down low that blocks a lot of shots. On offense, Morrow scores a lot of points near the rim. He had five dunks against Wings Elite.
- Desure Buie plans to visit Creighton soon. The 3-star point guard lists St. Louis, Creighton, Old Dominion, Minnesota, Seton Hall, and Florida as the programs recruiting him the hardest. He’s more confident in his perimeter shooting than I was expecting him to be, and has a better shot than I expected too.
- Ahmad Wagner didn’t play very much for All Ohio Red. I was expecting him to be more of a 3 than a 4, but Ahmad spent the majority of his minutes posting up, rather than being on the perimeter, He says Toledo, Iowa, and Minnesota are recruiting him the hardest. Ahmad talks with everyone on the Gophers’ coaching staff. They stay in touch “three to four times a week.”
- As I’ve said before, physically, Sam Neumann is on a different level than he was a year and a half ago. He’s an inside presence now defensively for Howard Pulley. Neumann’s a smart player and can help the team even when his shot isn’t falling.
