All Things Class of 2015 Recruiting - Class Finally Complete? Nope Chris Obekpa visit

Was very impressed with Jarvis at the Clash of the Classes game last night. Not sure I'd take too many guards over him when he's aggressive. MN fans are so unappreciative.

STrib: Los Angeles point guard (class of 2015) Max Hazzard likes Minnesota, wants to "do something different"

The perpetual blue skies and shorts weather of Los Angeles have no hold on Max Hazzard.

In fact, the 2015 point guard said, a chance of pace would be nice.

"I kind of want to branch out and do something different," Hazzard said.

Minnesota certainly is that. The Gophers, anchored in the coldest major city in the U.S., started recruiting the three-star athlete just before the first Nike Elite Youth Basketball (EYBL) session began in late April. The staff hasn't offered yet, but is plenty interested.

Color the California native intrigued.

"I love Minnesota," Hazzard said during Minneapolis' EYBL session last month. "I heard the campus is great. I like it out here, and it's a bigtime basketball school, so I'm interested."

Currently, Hazzard's collection of offers is mostly made up of West Coast Schools. Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, Pacific, Loyola Marymount. Hazzard also has an offer from Brown, and is being heavily recruited by Creighton and Alabama, he said.

Go Gophers!!

I watched Max several times and I'm a big fan! He was absolutely lighting it up from three and played solid on ball defense. Hopefully the coaching staff offers.

GopherHole will blow up with excitement if Jarvis commits.

Not sure which "MN fans" you're referring to, but 99.9% of MN fans are not posters on Gopherhole. I would bet Johnson and Illikainen will be treated as heroes if they commit.

Read the last couple pages of this thread and you'll see which ones I'm referring to.

I don't think I saw one post stating that Jarvis wouldn't be welcomed as a Gopher. I think people realize he's a great player and would be an excellent get, even if they like other PG's better. If Jarvis commits and people aren't excited about it, then we can start calling them unappreciative, but not yet imo.

This can only be good news . . .

Is UNLV recruiting him?

A lot of recruiting nuggets from Matt Jessen-Howard:

- There’s been multiple reports that Minnesota might be on top for Kevin Dorsey. A source I talked with sat next to and talked with Kevin’s parents at EYBL. The source told me that the Gophers ARE in the lead for the four-star 247Sports Composite point guard.

- Keep an eye on Sacar Anim. His stock continues to rise. He’s an athletic slasher, and is extremely successful at taking defenders on one-on-one from the baseline. He can defend the two or the three. Anim’s ceiling is very high, and he’s putting up nice numbers…I’m surprised he hasn’t grabbed at least one high-major offer yet. He’ll probably pick up more high-major interest after the dead period.
- Sacar Anim still has the same funky shot, but he’s growing on me. His only offers right now are from Indiana State and Northern Iowa, but I believe that he’ll be a high-major player. He drives to the hoop exceptionally well and is a very good athlete.

- The Gophers are looking at 2015 Cretin-Derham Hall/Howard Pulley guard Joe Rosga as a preferred walk-on. Rosga is skinny but quick and has a nice shot. I’ve been impressed with Joe the last four or five times I’ve seen him.

- Originally, the media went crazy saying that Allonzo Trier had a lot of interest in the Gophers. Then, it seemed like everyone seemed to say it was all hype. I talked to him Saturday, and I think he’s legitimately interested. I asked him which schools were recruiting him the hardest, and Minnesota was the first school he mentioned. I didn’t even mention that I was a Minnesota writer; I said that I was from 247Sports and ZagsBlog.
- Allonzo Trier says he’s hearing a lot from Minnesota, Arizona, Memphis, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Georgetown, Maryland, Baylor, Kansas, Louisville, and UConn. Trier said he’ll try to visit Minnesota later in the process.

- Wally Ellenson told me he has an offer to high jump and play basketball at Texas Tech. Henry told me that he’d like to play with Wally, under the right circumstances.

- Chris Clarke tells me he took an unofficial visit to Minnesota. It’s a dead period, so he wasn’t allowed to meet with coaches. Students showed him around campus. Clarke says Minnesota, Tennessee, Creighton, and Virginia Tech are recruiting him the hardest. Clarke has a great relationship with Buzz Williams at Virginia Tech. He wants to play in an uptempo system, which he’d fit very well in. He is athletic in every way — straight-line speed, quickness, lateral quickness, vertical, etc. Clarke has a sturdy build; he has a nice frame, broad shoulders, and should be able to put on weight at the next level but is already very strong. He loves to attack the basket, but he’s not careless and doesn’t drive into double teams. He’s a competitor and loves to get up and down the floor.

- Ed Morrow is hearing a lot from Nebraska and Minnesota. Ed grew up in Nebraska and around the Cornhuskers’ campus, and his parents were student-athletes there. Morrow likes the Gophers’ coaching staff and style of play. He watched the Gophers win the NIT. In my opinion, Ed is similar to Rodney Williams. He has athleticism oozing out of him. He’s not a back-to-the-basket guy and never will be, but I think he’s better suited for the 4 right now than the 3. He’s a defensive presence down low that blocks a lot of shots. On offense, Morrow scores a lot of points near the rim. He had five dunks against Wings Elite.

- Desure Buie plans to visit Creighton soon. The 3-star point guard lists St. Louis, Creighton, Old Dominion, Minnesota, Seton Hall, and Florida as the programs recruiting him the hardest. He’s more confident in his perimeter shooting than I was expecting him to be, and has a better shot than I expected too.

- Ahmad Wagner didn’t play very much for All Ohio Red. I was expecting him to be more of a 3 than a 4, but Ahmad spent the majority of his minutes posting up, rather than being on the perimeter, He says Toledo, Iowa, and Minnesota are recruiting him the hardest. Ahmad talks with everyone on the Gophers’ coaching staff. They stay in touch “three to four times a week.”

- As I’ve said before, physically, Sam Neumann is on a different level than he was a year and a half ago. He’s an inside presence now defensively for Howard Pulley. Neumann’s a smart player and can help the team even when his shot isn’t falling.

Strib: Host of DI veterans to guide 2015 forward Ahmad Wagner

Like his parents, the two Trices lend their advice on what aspects to look for on the academic side and what recruiting tactics to be wary of. When it comes to Big Ten schools -- Wagner has offers from Minnesota and Iowa -- the father and son can each talk a little about the facilities and campuses before the 2015 recruit even sets up a visit.

Besides the two Big Ten schools -- both of which Wagner hopes to visit this summer -- the versatile forward has collected offers from Bucknell, Kent State, Texas Tech, Wright State and Toledo, the last of which is third on the list for potential visits this summer. Minnesota is currently working with Wagner to set up an official visit.

Head coach Richard Pitino made sure that until then, Wagner's impression wasn't colored by his experience at the Nike Elite Youth Basketball tournament in Eagan last month -- the landscape a far cry from downtown Minneapolis.

"He told me where I'm at shouldn't give me the whole feel of Minnesota," Wagner said then. "He told me that before I came here. He told me when I come up for the visit, he can really show me around and everything. So I'm looking forward to that."

Hard to say if it's a trend or not, but at first glance it looks like we are recruiting more players from B1G country, and also more 3*s and 4*s. Appears to me to be a more focused approach.

I was thinking the same thing Howiewowie. I also haven't though "not a freaken chance" anytime I look a recruit up. Trier is the long shot, but the most recent interview at least gives me a glimmer of hope. The Big 3 skewed things last year in that I thought we were focusing on a bunch of kids we didn't have a shot at. That doesn't seem to be the case this year, seems like we've settled into our "league" and are recruiting the upper half of that (hopefully).

I'll tell you what... We land 2 of those guys in the top 165 (Manyang included), we've got a real solid class going already, we land 3 of those guys, and that's a damn good class! Go to work Richard. :)

After last year, I'd settle for 1.

After last year, I'd settle for 1.

The Gophers seem to be in decent shape with Dorsey and Jarvis, so I'm hoping we can get a commitment from one of them. I would think Pitino will be able to better sell the PG spot in his system this time around after what Lil Dre has shown can be done in that role. Immediate playing time should be available as well.

It also feels like we are in the top three for Manyang and Alex, so landing either of them seems realistic at this point.

I would be very happy with two commits from either of those combo possibilities. Anything beyond that would be absolute gravy!

1-2 players in the top 165 is not putting the Gophers "in good shape". It might put them at the bottom of the middle tier of the conference in regards to recruiting. In a hypothetical scenario where we get two guys ranked outside the top 100, but in the top ~150 and two random players to finish out the class, we are not keeping up with conference opposition. Not saying that will happen, just that the bar has to be higher. Still very early in the process and, for reference, Jerry Meyer's infamous crystal ball pick of Ja'Quan Newton to Minnesota occurred on June 28th last year.

No point in aiming low...getting only one is a loser mentality. We should get very good pick ups with 3 senior starters.

In addition to the news of Jarvis' unofficial, consensus top 125 recruit, guard KJ Walton out of Indiana is in the process of setting up a visit to Minnesota. Holds offers from Xavier, Minnesota, and Illinois State right now.

per the Daily:

Jimmy Whitt, Rivals’ No. 74 player in the class of 2015, could fit in well at Minnesota next to Johnson. Whitt said Pitino thinks he has great defensive potential at the collegiate level.

“I feel like we’re building a really good relationship,” Whitt said of Pitino. “I feel like it’s going pretty good right now.”

Chris Clarke, ranked 104th in Rivals’ 2015 class, and Kenny Williams have also been offered scholarships from Minnesota. The two are teammates on AAU team Boo Williams, and both want to play up-tempo and build a relationship with their college coach.

“I want to get out and run and [have] a coach that builds a relationship with me and my parents,” Williams said.

Its unbelievable how large my appetite is for hope.... I will eat and eat and eat hope until I cannot eat no more, then I just eat.... The worst part about hope, is that heartbreak burns it all up and restores my appetite to eat more. I seriously am thinking of getting corrective surgery to lower my ability to eat so much damn hope.

I'm on a hope high after some of these articles.....

Goddamnit I'm not even FROM Minnesota, I didn't think this defect could possibly be learned.... Figured it was innate.

Best post ever. Really taps into the zeitgeist, the ennui, the shared experience.
