All Things 2024 Minnesota Twins In-Season Thread

Has anyone ever seen said spreadsheets?

Or are they an urban myth like alligators in NYC sewers because they were flushed down toilets
They've spend all their money on tech so I'm sure there's no actual "spreadsheet" as he said.

But Falvey's squad of MIT analytic nerds are not a myth. Ruesse's talked about them several times. They won't talk to reporters (likely are not allowed to) and seem weird. Falvey/Levine are the only ones allowed to talk to the press but they hardly ever do. I'm sure their salaries combined could at least cover a lefty reliever better than Theilbar.

So you’re an anti-intellectual. It’s all making sense now😉

ZZZ. The Vikings GM is also an analytics nerd. But I'm pretty sure he's not telling Kevin O'Connell to put Johnny Mundt (Manny Margot) in for Justin Jefferson (Matt Wallner) on the next play because the analytics say.

Is it hard being the foremost expert on every sport?

Pleae enlighten the masses.

The Athletic recently did a long story on the situation with the White Sox, focusing on owner Jerry Reinsdorf. among the issues cited was Reinsdorf's refusal to adapt to changes in the sport - and analytics was a big part of that.

every team in baseball has an analytics department. every team in baseball prepares information for the manager, coaches and players. every team in baseball uses that information.

the Twins' problem is not analytics, or Falvey telling Rocco what to do. I will stipulate that Rocco has been hampered by front office moves that have not worked out. but in the end, the players have to do their jobs.

Royce Lewis last 30 games:
104 AB- 8 R- 22 H- 1 HR- 11 RBI- 5 BB- 32 K- .212/.241/.288 (.529 OPS)

I suppose that is because of analytics, too.

What's with the attitude? You go from decent discussion to @sshole sideswipes all the time.
It’s called jocularity 😃 - meant as a good natured joke.

You ask me not to take your sports predictions seriously and then get miffed about a little grief, love that irony.

I’ll put you back on ignore Ralph, but man did you have a righteous fade -

What's really been apparent to me is that unless both Buxton & Correa are not only in the line-up AND playing their positions at remotely full strength, the Twins fielding is flat out abysmal.

There have been so many weakly hit ground balls hit as soon as they reach the infield grass I am just hoping the infielders eat it and don't compound it with a lousy throw.

Aside from Santana all of the rest are below average or not playing probably their best position. Lee can probably be an above average fielder, especially at 3rd if (cross your fingers) Correa exhibits reliable long term health.

As much time as Correra has missed, he’s Cal Ripken compared to Trevor Story - just imagine if we’d have signed him instead -

2022 -94 games played
2023 - 43 games played
2024 - 19 games played

Something funny going on with the broadcast. Audio cuts off and someone then whispers "Go The Distance"

Rocco you moron
Margot sucks as a pinch hitter but let’s keep doing it.

Great win, they kept battling and my insomnia allowed me to catch most of the last inning.

Great to see them not fold and continue to fight for playoffs - shows how much it means to them and that Rocco hasn’t “lost the team”, his track record speaks volumes to the team and many fans.

I wonder if the 20 total Ks is a team record for a game?

Twins win.

Bloggers and podcasters upset because a win makes it harder to criticize the team.

but, analytics.........?

(it occurred to me that if you leave out the y, you are left with anal tics. I wounder if there is a salve for that?)

The 3 infielders of competency all made big plays in the extra frames to keep the Twins in it and then preserve the W.

- Lee, very nice bare hander on the Sac Bunt in the 10th.
- Santana gloved the hot shot to lead off the bottom of the 12th & next batter Correa fielded the slow roller and gunned the throw to first. Both kept the potential game tying run in the On Deck circle for a lower pressure save.

Tough plays with a wet infield.

Twins caught a nice break when the pitcher couldn't field Larnach's high hopper off the mound. Better late than never to finally put up a crooked number.

Twins have got to hope that this starts and doesn't get delayed mid game. Really can't afford to lose Lopez after two or three innings.

Red Sox have thrown in the towel - Devers to IL and done for the year.
They’re should to be a force in a few years when their youngsters get more seasoning..

They also have the minor leaguer of the year, per The Athletic’s minor league guru; Jenkins and Keaschall were also written up for their seasons.

Honorable mentions (there were only four of these)

Walker Jenkins, OF, Minnesota Twins

The best prospect on this list, Jenkins was the Twins’ 2023 first-round pick, fifth overall, but his season started late as he got hurt in his first game of 2024 and missed six weeks with a hamstring injury. After that, he hit .294/.407/.462 across the complex league, Low A and High A, only struggling when he was bumped up to Double A on Sept. 8. I’ll forgive him that last bit, as he’s still just 19 years old.

The Larry Walker comparisons he evoked in high school might turn out to be accurate after all.

Others of note (there were only five of these)

• Second baseman Luke Keaschall, the Twins’ 2023 second-round pick, also reached Double A in his first full season in pro ball, hitting .303/.420/.483 across two levels and earning a spot in the Futures Game.

My response is completely opinion. I believe this to be true because I watch the games. I don't think anyone who knows baseball, really knows baseball, would continually make the decisions that are made in the Twins organization. Continuing to pinch hit Margo, various bullpen moves, nauseating lefty/righty hitting/pitching changes, etc. are my first thoughts. Rocco was an unestablished manager that can be controlled for that and possible other reasons. Again, this is my opinion. And no, there is no "spreadsheet", but we all know what is meant by that. The Twins aren't getting a manager that will be an old school baseball guy, managing with the flow of the game, making moves based on feel and such. Isn't happening until larger changes are made. Lastly, I feel that the front office has brought in the horses, for the most part, but the strategy is lacking.

Fair enough, but there are a lot of MLB teams/managers that operate this way.

I think we see so many lineup changes because we don't have any consistent stars that stay healthy that belong in a certain spot in the lineup.
