All Things 2024-25 Vikings Regular Season Thread

LA burning is bad, but it's probably good for the Vikings. This is going to have an impact on the LA coaches and players. Hard to prep for a game when your city is burning.

Daniel Jones is officially moved to the 53-man roster.

this probably does not mean that he would play this season. it is more of an administrative move - making the Vikings eligible to receive a compensatory draft pick if Jones signs with a different team during the off-season.

But......if you like speculation.....it does at least create the possibility that Jones could come out of the bullpen if Darnold is stinking up the joint against LA.
Or if Darnold gets hurt, then he gets the call from the pen vs. Tricky Nicky.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the game is moved to Vegas or somewhere else if the fires continue into the weekend.

If that happens and they offer Raiders PSL holders any shot, I'm all over that shit. That would be kind of awesome. Are you just speculating, or have you seen any hint of this? Just curious.

Just speculating. LA area is a mess right now but I think the winds are supposed to die down a bit I believe. Depending on wind direction though, air quality could still be a big issue.

Still much more of an impact on the LA players than the Vikes. Maybe we end up with a home game after all?

Chargers fans generally travel like shit, and interestingly enough, they were JUST here last Sunday afternoon for the season finale against the Raiders. Not sure how much appetite they'll have to come back to town, and actually have to pay REAL ticket prices, not the pennies they paid for last Sunday's Raiders-Chargers game.

The fires are a sad situation, but this isn't going to have much of an effect after today unless you lived in the area that burned. The area/location relative to the stadium is about like Chanhassen being burned in MN.

I'm sure the Rams won't miss any more practices and the game on Monday shouldn't be an issue.

air quality from the smoke seems to post the most potential to impact outdoor sporting events.
from The Athletic:

According to air quality index (AQI) data from Plume Labs in El Segundo, Calif. — where the Chargers' practice facility is located — the area had an AQI value of 153 on Wednesday, which is considered unhealthy to breathe.

The Rams, who do not have an indoor facility, practice in Woodland Hills, where the AQI is 131, which can cause health effects for members of sensitive groups. The AQI value at SoFi Stadium — which is an open-sided stadium — was at 184 on Wednesday.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Rams are still scheduled to practice Thursday in Woodland Hills, but are monitoring the air quality in the area.

According to AirNOW, a program from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that provides air quality data, outdoor activities should be shorter and less intense once the AQI level tops 100. Above 150, people should avoid long or intense outdoor activities. And above 200, all people should avoid all physical activity outdoors.

“The NFL continues to closely monitor developments in the area and will remain in contact with both clubs and the NFLPA," a league spokesperson told The Athletic on Wednesday.

Media who have watched replays or the All-22 are saying Viking receivers were open. Darnold just misfired or else didn't see them as he was rattled.
Detroit sent heavy blitzes way more than the Vikes anticipated. Darnold was #1 QB against the blitz going into the game, really no way to anticipate that it would go so badly for him, but it did.

Regarding the running game, 72% of Vikings runs inside the 10 yard line this season resulted in being hit at the line of scrimmage or before. Worst in the league. 50% of Vikings runs inside the 10 yard line resulted in no gain or a loss. Second worst in the league.
Regarding passing, Brandel and Robinson combined to allow 17 pressures Sunday night!

Summary: Master of them obvious here. The loss lies mostly at the feet of Darnold, without doubt. However oline needs to look in the mirror as well.
Before the game, no doubt most Vikes fans rode the Bring Darnold Back Train.
Now, most fans have gotten off.
Before the game, most had serious doubts about our interior offensive line. Those doubts were certainly confirmed.
The interior oline chronic condition must be finally addressed in the upcoming off-season!

If we see a similar performance in Darnold's first playoff game, I'll without question be on board with having some concerns about moving forward with Darnold as the Man.

But I'd bet dollars to donuts (and I haven't looked into it enough to confirm) that Detroit pulled out all the stops and came out with a defensive game plan that was different not only from what they did against the Vikings in the first game, but anything they'd done this year to this point.

It doesn't excuse Darnold from having a bad game, but I'm not exactly doing a complete 180 because he had a rough game in Week 18 to close out a 14-3 season.

Interesting about Cam Robinson. No doubt, he's been disappointing as a pickup to fill the void. Losing Darrisaw when they did, arguably one of the most important players on the entire roster. He's an elite talent at LT.

Josh Allen had a 9 for 30 game and Jared Goff had a 5 interception game. Both this season. Bad games happen. (Unfortunately this bad game happened at a time when the Lions were very vulnerable.).
Of course both those QBs have a much more stellar resume than Darnold, but up to Darnold to bounce back Monday. If he leads us to some post-season success, Sunday night will be left far in the rear view mirror.
Which Darnold will show up, the one from Packer game or the one from the Lion game. That is the question.

Would definitely consider him for a tush-push type of scenario.
At best he would be the third QB and could only play if both Darnold and Mullins are injured.
Vikes are not going to use a game day roster spot on the third QB and Mullins is the back-up.

I'm leaning towards it moving. Air quality concerns and safety/security resources may be needed elsewhere. The fire nearest to SoFi near Riveria CC is about 15 miles away.

I'm not wagering on such a catastrophe, but I think the NFL wouldn't put out detailed contingency plan without it being a pretty decent chance (50/50) it will need to be implemented.

I'm thinking if it's looking doubtful by Friday morning, they will announce a move.

over 2,000 structures reported destroyed and over 30,000 people evacuated from the various fires.

my niece and her husband live in West Hollywood. they were ordered to evacuate at about 8:00pm when the fires got to within a mile of their apartment. they were going to crash with friends tonight and see what happens tomorrow. (they just got married in October so their apartment is full of wedding presents).

bottom line - I think it would look bad to have an NFL game in LA in the middle of all this chaos. just the logistics of getting players and fans to the stadium could be an issue. the NFL doesn't like to look bad. unless the fire situation gets a lot better by Friday, I'd bet on the game being moved.

Any stats on how many screen plays we ran during that game? If they're blitzing 6 players, a screen play is an obvious call.

There is no chance what so ever the Vikings and Rams are playing in Los Angeles on Monday night. that game is getting move period.
I'd give it about 90% odds that it gets moved. The NFL is justifiably worried about its image - having a game next to burned-out areas isn't a good image. Move the game, have a moment of silence before the game, and it would look much better.

I'm guessing that the Rams will also leave LA early to practice elsewhere, as air quality is an issue. I do wonder how many of the Rams players and staff have homes in impacted areas? They almost all at least have friends in those areas. That'd take a toll on anyone, and it will impact how well the Rams can prepare for the game.

It's probably for the best to move it. Does suck a bit for the Rams. Lots of Vikings fans at every Cardinals game. They will definitely have the crowd advantage now. Then again 14-3 >>>>10-7 so I don't feel bad.
