All Things 2024-25 Vikings Regular Season Thread

- Jefferson and DePaola first team all pro. Van Ginkle second team.
- 6 of the 10 first and second team olinemen are from Detroit, Philly, KC.
- Kyle Hamilton 2nd team all pro.

Greenard probly the next closest Viking to make it.

It went from MIN -1.5 to -2.5 after they announced the game was being moved.

I'd love to sit in a room with the Vegas odds makers just to hear their thought process for establishing the lines of games. Fascinating stuff to me.
I would presume it's more based on computer algorithms these days than actual human discussions except in a case like this specific game in which there some rather unique circumstances.

From here on out, it's all based on how much action/money goes on one side or the other which will sway the line (unless there is an injury update).

* JJ and Chase were the only unanimous selections.

* Hurts cleared to play against GB

* DeShaun Watson tore his other Achilles (Worst trade/contract in history of sports?)

There is zero chance anyone would be stupid enough to spend a top 3 draft choice on someone hobbling around the sidelines 4 months after a meniscus injury. No chance.
The Giants and Raiders, disagree with this assessment.

This one is so bad it requires it's own note. I'd say his performance/repeated injuries were one of the most perfect examples of karma, but with his $230MM contract, I'm not sure that necessarily applies. Dude's crying all the way to the bank. I do wonder how much he had to pay out to the 23 accusers to keep his rear end out of prison.

Here’s the data breakdown from The Athletic and their predictions.

We gotta pressure Stafford, create some turnovers and give Sam a clean pocket by limiting their pass rush; if we do that, our passing game will flourish with 300+ yards and 3 TD strikes - I’m thinking a more decisive W,

How the teams match up from a data standpoint

Here is where each team ranks in the following categories, using explosive play rate for explosiveness and success rate for efficiency:

Def turnovers1st14th
Off explosiveness6th16th
Def explosiveness22nd19th

Predictions

Lewis: Vikings 24, Rams 20. This is based upon belief in O’Connell and the Vikings offensive staff assisting the offensive line with chips and extra protection. The run game will be important in this, too. Allow the Rams defensive front to tee off, and Darnold and the Vikings could be in for a long night.

Krawczynski: Vikings 27, Rams 24. I expect Darnold to bounce back from last week. I expect the Vikings defense to be better prepared than he was in Week 8. And heart-breakingly, the people of Los Angeles have been through a devastating week. I wouldn’t blame the Rams at all if their hearts and minds are elsewhere.

This is a big game for KOC. Love the guy, want no one else

But he was masterclassed on Sunday vs Detroit and had zero answer(very rare)

Which followed up some very blah in game decisions vs GB(more common for him)

Need to craft up a good game plan. And please, for all of us don't kick 52+ yard field goals on 4th and short with a kicker clearly toying with the yips

Yeah, 4th and long or even medium, go ahead and attempt the 52+ FG. 4th and short (less than 3), try to move the chains.

Bolded: did we run any screens? I know we sometimes threw some short passes to RB's, which is similar-ish to a screen.

I'm just saying: screens are really good against blitzes. Why not run some more screens?

Vikings fans have been wishing they could grab a top QB in the draft forever. So we finally get one in the top 10 of a loaded QB draft, one who would be the #1 pick in this years draft, and now we want to trade him?

Makes zero sense.
I speak for no other Vikings fan than myself.

But what I say for myself is: what any NFL fan should want is a franchise QB, regardless if they draft that guy or somehow acquire him in some other way.

Until the Detroit game ... you know, up through 14-2 tied for first in the division ... until that game, Darnold was like ... in the MVP convo.

I full grant and submit to that fact that he picked a terrible time to have a flop of a game. Probably the worst time.

We will see if he bounces back, like everyone seems to think he is going to do.

But say he does really well in the playoffs. Or even just for the sake of hypothetical conversation, say he played great last weekend and beat Detroit, then did really well in the playoffs.

I mean ... how can you let go of a guy that leads you to that kind of a season .... based on the hopes that you've drafted a guy who might ... lead you to that kind of a season?

No offense or anything, but do you have money invested in McCarthy? Just wondering why you are so sold on him, after a knee injury and zero NFL experience so far to boot?

How about this? Darnold recovers nicely and plays very well thru rest of post season. Vikes win a game or more.

Kwesi decides to go with Darnold and trade McCarthy, who some draft evaluators are saying would be the first QB chosen if was in this draft.

McCarthy is traded for a top 3 draft pick and Vikes use that pick to select Travis Hunter. Would be two players in one. A top cornerback would give a big boost to our defense and imagine trying to stop our offense with Hunter joining for some plays.

Would be a lot of excitement going into Viking training camp next season.
I know you made this back on Thursday, but curious what you think now that the news has broke that Coach Prime is interested in Raiders. If he did, then I assume it will include a guarantee that he can trade up to draft his son.

Which is why my preference is to not franchise Darnold.

Either commit to Darnold long term and trade McCarthy to get a high draft pick. Also can then spread out Darnold's cap hit if don't franchise him.
or
Commit to McCarthy long term. Release Darnold so can use the full $76 million of cap space on free agents.

The only way I would franchise Darnold is if knew could be traded for a draft pick.
Spending $76 on fancy free agents does no good if you don't have a QB.

McCarthy may be the next Joe Burrow, but I think he needs one full year of being healthy before he's ready to take over starting.

If Prime goes to LV and Vikes go with Darnold long-term here is what will happen:

Vikes will trade McCarthy to Cleveland for the #2 pick.
Then, Vikes will trade the #2 pick to LV (LV drafts Shadeur) for:
#6 round 1
#5 round 2
#4 round 3
#9 round 3
This is a fair trade according to the drafttek trade chart.
Vikes will use the #6 pick to draft either the dlineman or cornerback from Michigan, whichever is available.

The Vikings are not signing Sam Darnold to a long term deal and they are not trading JJ McCarthy. Can stop wtith these stuffs please thank you.

Certainly can go the franchise tag direction. But, other than Stokes and Carrington, all GB's main players are returning. So if we franchise, GB will have significantly more cap space than us going into next season.
(I know Detroit has significant cap space as well, but not sure of their contracts situation.).

The Detroit game was Darnold's worst of the season, but it also wasn't his first bad game of the season. Darnold is just a more talented Case Keenum, and you don't blow half of your FA money on journeymen QBs after one good season.

This was a great rookie QB class, and JJ was ranked in the top 4, despite where Atlanta took Penix. These QB draft classes don't happen very often, and the 1st round picks have looked pretty good so far. You have to capitalize in a draft like that, and I believe the Vikings did.

JJ has all of the tools to be a great QB, and he's a proven winner. JJ was making some of the same passes people are praising Darnold for in his 1st preseason game. He is much cheaper and has a higher ceiling than Darnold.

Appreciate the responses guys!

We all just want to get to the damn Super Bowl!

Skol baby!

Yes, and going into the season KOC said that McCarthy is the long term plan. So indications are that KOC is sold on McCarthy.
If that is the case, from a Vikings perspective would be really nice if Darnold plays very well going forward and leads us to playoff win(s), which would make it easier for us to franchise and trade him.

Which team was Lewis Cine named to?

". . .smart, tough, competitive. I think we got someone who is off the charts in all three. . . he was really one of our targets in the teens . . . He was one of our favorite players in the draft. We got a bad dude."
- Kwesi

Credit to Kwesi that he has owned up to it and admitted he got out over his skis on this draft. But was really bad.
