All Things 2014 Basketball Recruiting Thread

Obviously Vaughn is the first choice to take that last 2014 scholarship, but don't forget about Abdoulaye Gouye either. If we don't get either of them, then I'd say hold it for 2015.

A lot of the good JUCO bigs have already committed, but if there is one out there in the Spring, I'd love to go that route. The Gophers could be very good next year with the Senior Dre/Dre back court and an athletic, experienced 4 man next to Eliason in the front court. I was hoping the Gophers could get in on Jameel McKay, but he committed to ISU a few days ago.

The other option that could be available to us is a 5th year transfer.

In general, I wouldn't get too hung up on the idea that we have just one scholarship left for 2014.

There is presently very little loyalty to your state in athletics which is a change. If you have been to the Stanford campus and then consider the academic reputation of that university you wonder why the U was even in the conversation for Reid.

No way do we need to go another year with only 12 scholarship players. Fill the last scholarship and if Rashad decides to attend the U another scholarship will open.

We will lose 3 guards-Austin, Malik and Mav. We only have two coming in. We need more guards if we are playing a 3 guard O.

Not to sound salty, but I myself am not going to be assuming or theorizing in any way of Rashad attending the U. I think the whole situation on Friday brought me back down to earth and realize that I need to stop creating a make believe situation that has no proof of ever taking place, and instead just wait back and observe.
After Rashad makes his college decision, and if he did choose Minnesota... Then I will start theorizing! We have to get in that situation first.

Yeah I think we had a better shot at Reid. Don't think we are even in Vaughn's top 3 at the moment, though obviously I have no way of knowing for certain.

Recruiting is just so wacky that you'll never know for sure until the decision is final! Once Vaughn's decision is final, than IMO people can speculate. But nothing in recent history with top 100 recruits tells us we are going to land Vaughn.

I'm cautiously optimistic with Jarvis and Illikainen, but certainly not going to jump out of my shoes thinking that all they imagine is becoming a Gopher. Cautious is the key word moving forward.

STrib: Three U men's basketball recruits to sign; one 2014 scholarship left

Minnesota could use the fourth scholarship to go after Vaughn or another player in the spring — Birmingham power forward Abdoulaye Gueye has garnered a lot of interest from the Gophers, for example — or save it for the 2015 class, when Pitino and his staff will be more established. After coming to the university in April, Pitino and the Gophers staff have been recruiting for 2014 for a mere 6½ months.

PiPress: Gophers basketball: Three recruits make up a 'solid class'

"For the situation that coach Pitino and his staff were in, I think they did a good job," 247Sports.com recruiting analyst Jerry Meyer said. "(The class is) solid. I think they're going to expect more from themselves recruiting-wise in the years to come. But Nate is a dynamic player who can really score. He'll be a very good player for Minnesota."

Is he stating that Gopher Nation is blessed to have him? I certainly hope he's correct.

Prior to this year the gophers have had Outstanding success landing in State 5 Star recruits!

I really think a lot of people forget the tight time-table this staff had to recruit these three highly ranked in-state kids. If they were able to put together a solid class in such a short time frame, I feel very good about them going forward.

Josh Martin seems super pumped to be a Gopher. See a lot about his excitement in various threads. These are three quality players coming in next year. Yes it sucks to have Reid go to Stanford, but we still got three good players. Now sign Vaughn and we are in great shape. Vaughn would just flourish in this system.

I'm in the minority but I love this class. Mason is a super sleeper that reminds me of Bobby Jackson a tad, Martin has great size and desire to be here, and Morris appears to model Vincent Grier's game. Would love to have Reid but I'm proud of what our coaching staff accomplished in a short window. Now they need to crush in 2014-15! Go Gophers!!!

After watching the first few games and the number of open looks our shooters are getting, I would think Vaughn's mouth would be watering. UNLV is a dumpster fire right now. ISU runs nice offense, but I like what the Gophs are doing better.

Yes totally agree. Vaughn you watching? This is the spot for you! Reid Travis, this was the team for you too. Maybe still your spot after Dawkins gets fired from Stanford in four months.

Love? Probably not for me. Like? Ya, sure! I think all three are pieces who will make an impact for us. Now throw in 1 more guy and we'll be in nice shape. I'm not holding my breath for Vaughn though.

Fair enough. The more I read about Mason, the more I like his addition to this program. His videos are pretty impressive.

I totally agree about the Morris/Grier comparison. And I certainly hope that's right! Overall I'm happy with the class, it's just been disappointing to miss out on some of the players - when this class potentially could have been Travis, Whitehead, Macura and TumTum.

What really sucks is what a tremendous day Wednesday could've been had Reid, Jones and Vaughn decided to stay loyal to the home school. Good kids that would've elevated this program to an unbelievable level. I respect their decision to go elsewhere...I just won't cheer for them now that Tyus and Reid have chosen to elsewhere. Rashad would now be considered a huge "hero" if he picked Minnesota.

He would potentially be called a "savior" if he decided to sign here. He would be loved.
