Okay gang, what's your predictions. Will Borton be back? If so, how much longer?

if we want whalen, they should hold on to her until her contract is up or until whalen retires, I doubt you can convince her to retire to take the job, but if you just want anyone else (jim pete) than fire her now!

Yep no problem! Coley and McMorris are going to be Iowa Hawkeyes (5th in Big Ten) and Elbert is going to Marquette (4th in Big East).

wtf? we are losing recruits to them? not even the blue bloods, FIRE HER NOW!

Enough with the Whalen talk! She was an all star last year; her team were champions; she seems to have lost none of her desire to play; with overseas play, she's making good moneyand she hasn't coached one damn game in her life, even as an assistant. This program can't take any more Borton so waiting until she retires is stupid. On the other hand, Guy, I like the Jim Pete suggestion. Never thought I would get to this point, but I'm pretty happy about this game on national TV. Another nail in the Borton coaching coffin although at this point it might not have been needed.

I'm with you, don't think she has any interest in coaching now or maybe ever, but I was just pointing out that if people on here want any chance at whalen, they'd have to wait for her. But yeah, borton needs to go and we need to bring someone new. I'm not sure how much interest jim pete would have, not sure he wants to give up the twolves gig, and the wnba gig works perfectly with the nba schedule. But I would take an attempt to talk to him if I was the U.

Another Borton downfall is that are only 10 scholarship players, and 2 of them don't contribute. How you can let a D-I program get to this situation?

If Jim Pete wants a head coaching gig, the U might be his best chance. The question is, does he want a head coaching gig?

Agree Mulligan. Whalen has several years left. She still wants to "play" Case in point on Borton. The Swede was being
double teamed down low in the first half. Completely ineffective . I suggested in a post above she should bring the
Swede up high and rotate her low after a kick out pass from the top. This eliminates the double team. Borton didn't adjust to that until the second half and the Swede got 16 points and was a lot more active. I coached girls basketball
at the junior high level and that adjustment is simple Basketball 101 and Borton didn't see it.

Go Gophers!!

Yeah, enough of this Whalen and Peterson talk. If they want to make a move, they have someone who's more than qualified sitting right on the bench in Ted Riverso.

I've always thought it was interesting. Next door, when they have coaches who've won D3 titles (Bennett, Ryan), they give them a chance on the big stage. When we have those people, we put them on the bench under a sub-par head coach.

I noticed the girls were glaring and being a tad bitchy. ( Hirt got after Roche on a slow defensive switch )

I don't think Ted wants to be a head coach again. He left the Tommie's on his own, and was out of coaching for a couple of years before joining the Gophers.

Borton's tenure has never been awe-inspiring. She basically inherited her final four team and since then has done next to nothing except let the program fall into disrepair. Would think the clock is ticking down on her and frankly, it's long overdue

Joel Maturi should forfeit all money he gets in his retirement from the U for extending the contract of this incompetent coach.

glaring at each other is one thing. Just so they don't start throwing flywheels at each other!!! :)

MN Daily Column: Borton's seat is getting hot, ya feel me?

If winning an NCAA tournament game wasn’t enough to save Tubby’s job, then missing the NCAA tournament shouldn’t be enough for Borton to keep hers.

That said, there’s still time for Borton to turn this season around. There is only one ranked opponent left on the schedule and a talented roster in place. It’s certainly possible.

In order for that to happen, though, something has to change this season.

Or else it might next season.

Ya feel me?

I'm finally feeling him.

Like the idea of cutting her loose right now and put Ted Riverso in charge. But Ted would not be a candidate longer term for reasons expressed here already, plus he has no cache with recruits. His national title at St. Thomas is 20 yrs ago, now for better or worse (meaning: worse), he is associated with Pam Borton and the U.

Longer term AJ is the guy, I agree, but it ain't gonna happen. Jim Pete is not gonna happen. The next Gopher women's hoops coach will be a woman. After Brad Frost and Hugh McCutcheon…there are significant constituents/stakeholders who will insist it has to be a woman.

So I will say: Ruth Sinn.

PS. The stuff about Joel Maturi and a "secret extension" is inaccurate. Yes, it's been reported that way, but if you believe everything you read in the Strib, good luck to you.

PPS. Cayla McMorris is going to Wiscy, not Iowa.

Marquette and Creighton each are taking 3 MN girls this year. The top 5 are MN, Marq, IA, WI, Marq. 2nd 5--SDSU, Creighton, Iowa State, Creighton, St. John's NY.

The ones you really wanted are Chase Coley, 6-3, shot blocker extraordinaire, recently scored 49 vs. Carlie Wagner and NRHEG (but lost); and Kenisha Bell, the best ball defender ever and has increased her scoring from 8 last year to 20 this year, who verbaled MN then changed her mind and is going to Marquette. McMorris is also a very very solid wing who hits the 3 and gets from the arc to the rim faster than anybody this side of Ty Jones. Those 4 (Wagner + 3) could have been a Final 4 group.

It wasn't reported here on GH, therefor it was a secret.:cool02:

Why was Borton extended???

I never understood why the Borton contract was extended. What was the logic?

I know lots of people say it was Joel's final "favor for loyalty" move (kind of like a lame duck president pardoning his crooked political cronies) but it just seems so odd. Borton was a Voelz' hire not a Maturi hire.

Why wouldn't he just let the new AD worry about Borton?

This kind of thing happens all the time in a variety of different environments. It may be as much to do with taking care of the assistants as it was Borton. You are right, though, that there is no reason for loyalty on the surface at least.

Maturi may very well have realized it was time for Borton to go. Problem was he always felt it was best to extend coaches before firing them.:cool02:

Wonder if the answer is partly in what Sunnyday said about the next coach having to be a woman. He is very knowledgable about female basketball in Minnesota. I'm guessing he knows who those "significant constituents/stakeholders" were or are. They would have had Maturi's ear and I'm guessing back then Borton still had the support of at least some of the big contributors. The problem with her has been that the erosion has been pretty slow. Her winning percentage is pretty good and her teams would beat a good team or show enough flashes of good play so you could always hope. I'm still a little worried that they might turn it around and she'll survive another year. In some ways, a train wreck should be welcome.

Also, Norwood is still new so maybe he won't be so influenced and simply go out and choose the best coach he can find. I would hope the people who insist on a woman coach take a look at Pitino and Smart and just not interfere.
