All Things 2022 Minnesota Vikings Off-Season Thread

PA had Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk on his show.

PA suggested that the Vikes had some "strong internal candidates" for GM and HC.

Florio - as politely as possible - told PA there was no chance of that happening.
Florio is a complete moron, but I would agree with this. The Tampa VP of Personnel is interesting. That organization has done a good job of loading that roster

But it's a bit easier when half the players are friends of Tom Brady.

Are you bringing Tom Brady here as part of the deal?

Actually I think they've done pretty well drafting, wasn't even really thinking about the strictly Brady-era. Brady picked Tampa in large part because of the roster. Sure a few have followed him there but they've hit some home runs in drafting; Wirfs, Vita Vea, Winfield Jr, and a handful of others.

Barreiro was pushing Patterson. All of them have been commenting on how wonderful Leber was after the game and the possibility of him taking over for Coleman. Regular old boys club at da fan.

Lieber would be good sideline guy.
Patterson won't be HC considering Zimmer ran the D. He should get a DC opportunity somewhere else.

This. They wouldn't have won the SB last year without Brady (or another elite QB), but almost nobody can win the SB without an elite QB the way the NFL is structured. But even if you ignore Brady and Gronk, that team has done a really good job of acquiring talent. And other than the sliver of success they had with Dungy/Gruden, that organization has been an absolute black hole for decades. Look at the Lions- bringing and retaining talent to a downtrodden organization isn't necessarily easy. I would have no qualms with poaching front office talent from that organization.

What's the deal with KFAN pimping Leber's career lately?

A few days ago they were talking about him taking Greg's role. Today they were pushing him for a Vikings front office position.

This week on KFAN has been "Ben Leber Career Chat" week.

If the local media had it's way, Marc Trestman would be in year 10 of coaching both the Vikings and the Gophers.

On the player comments -

let's face it, if you think the current coach is a tool, are you really going to come out and tell the media, "yeah, the head coach - who decides how much I play - is a complete tool." Any current player who did that would be tagged as a "trouble-maker." Especially for a coach like Zim who has a track record of putting players in the doghouse.

likewise, the media members have a vested interest in maintaining a relationship with the coach and GM because they rely on them for access and comments - especially in the Zoom era when the media can't attend practice or go in the locker room.

the fact that Kendricks - who was seen as one of Zim's guys - comes out and says he had problems with Zim is very interesting. It makes it sound as if this was not a fun team to be a part of the last couple of years.

It would give them an insider on the team. Which is all they care about.

It’s is in overdrive, obvious and offensive. That Gabe guy who is on with PA is twice as good as leber.

You don't like Lieber?

Do I like Ben Leber? Oh well, I could answer that a couple of ways. If people think he's pretty good, then I can see that. I could see how people would like him. But also, if there are experts who don't like Ben, I'd have to understand what specifically they are not happy about, or what they feel the issue is with Ben as to why they don't like him. After knowing that, I could have a conversation on whether that criticism was warranted or not. But overall, if you are just asking me if I like Ben. Yes. I think Ben does a good job and I would recommend Ben.

(There, I answered your Ben Leber question in my best Ben Leber style answer).

Here’s an idea for the Wilfs: Make U’s P.J. Fleck the new Vikings coach

With the Minnesota Vikings searching for new leadership, conjecture has focused on a number of displaced coaches of pro teams and high-level assistants around the country. Yet the Wilf family owners do not have to look that far.

Just a couple of miles away east of the Vikings stadium in downtown Minneapolis, P.J. Fleck, the coach of the University of Minnesota football team, has elevated the Gophers from mediocrity to relevance in the Big Ten and on the national scene.

Coming off a third-consecutive bowl game victory, the 18-6 win over West Virginia in the re-christened Guaranteed Rate bowl game in Phoenix after Christmas, the energetic head of the Gophers has just completed his fifth season — and he has at least seven more upcoming as a result of a mid-season $5 million extension of his contract with the university. That’s a large sum, to be sure, although middling by big-time collegiate standards and puny compared to what the pros are paying these days (about $8 million to $10 million).

P.J. might be the best choice for the most vaunted — and highest-paying — athletic coaching position in the state.

Skol Vikes!!

We waited a week already to start interviewing? I realize there isn't a recruiting class we need to save like in college, but we'll certainly lose on coaching candidates at this pace.

Skol Vikes!!
This makes sense, but at the same time, one podcast I was listening to today basically said, what's the rush? I'm inclined to agree I guess? I forget most of the argument but it seemed like a reasonable argument. Not everyone will be a fit everywhere, I'm not worried about the Vikings losing out on potential candidates for quite a while yet

That's fair. There is no rush like college and certainly better to make the right hires than the quick hires, but I sure hope we get the guy we want, not the best guy left.

Agreed. There is no rush. A good coach can be found. Rushing the decision is how you screw up.

I think a listened to the same podcast, or one that made a similar point. The basic argument, as I recall, is that when a coach is hired during the process does not affect results. So a coach hired within the first couple of weeks would have about the same chance of success statistically as one hired a month or two later. Thus, hiring your coach as fast as you can does not guarantee it will be a good hire and gives you no advantage over other teams who might take their time with the decision.

The Vikings seem to be in troubled waters for one thing or another ever since the Mike Lynn Era. This current situation is a total mess. I wish the team good luck.

They are due for a big break after all the misfortunes. Coming close isn't good enough.

I am still heartbroken from the Super Bowl losses and bad calls that when against their way keeping them from getting to the Super Bowl.

Fixed it for ya!

reminder - there are a lot of rules about when you can interview people IF they are employed by teams that are still in the playoffs.

I think you can interview coaching candidates if their teams have a bye. I know there are some rules about interviewing GM candidates, but could not quote them off the top of my head.

point being that the Vikes cannot just interview anyone they want whenever they want.

Of course, if you are interviewing a GM or HC candidate from a team that is not in the playoffs, I think that is fair game. But - are you really going to be looking at candidates from teams that were not successful? So, I suspect the majority of the interviews will involve GM and HC candidates whose teams are still playing.

Also - some talk that they are setting up interviews with GM and HC candidates simultaneously. which is interesting because the conventional wisdom is that you hire a GM first and then the new GM helps hire the HC.

It sounds like the Vikings requested to talk to Kellen Moore, Todd Bowles, Leslie Frazier, and Jonathon Gannon.

Frazier and Bowles meet the Rooney rule requirements. Frazier is a token interview, right? No way they bring him back.

Any other people confirmed?

the Frazier tweet is a spoof, come on, change your best. no chance that was real

Really bad if true though. Unbelievable.

Rookie 'vendetta' against Mond, Davis, Surratt and Jones? That just sounds ridiculous. Those guys are all 3rd round and beyond guys, and it was always known that all but Davis would be projects, and Davis was hurt for like at least the first half of the year, no?

People just making shit up it seems. The old regime is gone, time to move on
