All Things 2020-2021 College Basketball Coach Hire/Fire Thread

SLC is an old Delta Air hub from SkyWest, even before NWA merger. Lot of direct flights.

Great job. Can recruit anywhere but California is alive for them. So is Texas. They have great support and better success than most. Incredibly beautiful state. This is a hire that is worth watching for big success.
And they’ve had success under multiple coaches in the past 20 years. Majerus was the man. Loved him.

Let’s just say it, there was no way the Gophers were not hiring a black coach. I fully understand it and I have no problem with it. White coaches get way more opportunities simply because they’re white, and don’t give me this just hire the best candidate stuff. You know how many times white coaches have been hired and have not been the best candidate? See Richard Pitino.

Also, how are black coaches supposed to be the best candidate with head coaching experience if extremely few are hiring them as head coaches at any level? You can’t tell me there aren’t qualified black coaches that are denied opportunities at smaller schools. Ben Johnson gets turned down at Montana St and Northern Illinois but gets hired at Minnesota? How many cases do we not here about? At even lower levels? Minnesota is giving a black man an opportunity who happens to be from Minnesota, played at Minnesota, graduated from Minnesota, and loves Minnesota.
I disagree with those who say it diminishes Ben and his accomplishments and he wouldn’t want that. He’s well aware of it and even spoke to it at his presser. He knows the reality of the whole process and understands it completely.
You do realize that Ben got passed over by Northern Illinois for another black man right? I know that people like to jump to racism as the go to when a black man isn’t picked for job and they become convinced even though they have no proof of it, and thus should not be convinced one way or the other. This is a perfect example, you use Ben being passed over by Northern Illinois as an example of racism even though you have no proof except that they didn’t hire a specific black man, and you ran with it without even a thought. Being a racist is one of the worst things you can be called in our society. Your comments about Nothern Illinois and Montana St imply they are racist institutions. How much research did you do to make such accusations, not much apparently, you didn’t even know who they actually hired. With all you know about those particular hires is it not possible that Ben was not actually the best candidate and had nothing to do with race? If that is the case then why lock onto the racist possibility and ignore all the other possibilities? It’s possible that Northern Illinois hired a better coach than Minnesota.

I didn’t say they’re racist. I’m simply saying racism exists and there’s nothing wrong with purposefully searching for and hiring a black coach. I believe there is racism and institutions need to be conscientious of that when they are making hires and that’s exactly what Minnesota did in this case. There’s nothing wrong with it in my opinion. I think that’s great Northern Illinois hired a black coach as well.

What does this mean:

“You can’t tell me there aren’t qualified black coaches that are denied opportunities at smaller schools. Ben Johnson gets turned down at Montana St and Northern Illinois but gets hired at Minnesota?”

Recruited Tyler Peterson and Dan Jech from MN while at USD. Was a lead recruiter for Tim Miles at NDSU...
He obviously recruited the area for talent. However, you named two kids I've never heard of and if that's all he's ever gotten out of MN, that why he's not the coach.

So many things factor in is all I'm saying. Can't just say he's a really good coach, why didn't we hire him?

Did Smith want this job? or was he desiring Utah?
Gates still doesn't have a new Gig
Indiana went way out in left field to get a hire
Dutcher isn't going anywhere
Musselman isn't going to leave Arkansas unless he breaks the bank
Marquette got a Tubby like hire (going to be fired), but much younger.

Lastly, MN wasn't going to break bank and until they can, this is the best way to go. IMO

I don't d do sour grapes, and rationalization is for excuse-makers.

My informed guess is that Smith is disappointed to not get the Minnesota job, but he understands the position the U was in, and he's going to take a philosophical and faith-filled approach to this moment and embrace his new opportunity as what was clearly meant to be.

I like hiring an NBA coach, with no college experience, even less than I like hiring a P5 assistant.

You had said that Smith didn't recruit MN in the last 15 years. I named two quick ones off the top of my head. DJ Davis is another. He was at USD for 4 years and recruited just as many MN kids to USD as Pitino did in the same tenure. He recruited tons of MN kids to NDSU as well as the lead assistant there too. How many MN kids did BJ land at Xavier? Also he didn't recruit MN kid at Utah State for various reasons. Lack of mormon basketball players in our state being number 1. Hiring a coach cause we "like him" and hes "one of us" is not the best hiring practices imo.

We disagree in the point that Smith didn't want this job. It's pretty well known by people who know him he did. Plus Utah isn't breaking the bank for him any more than what we are overpaying BJ for his experience. I hope BJ works out and I think if he build a good staff he has a chance, but this is a tough tough job. IMO hiring a dude who's won and other tough job. Hopefully works out for both parties, but if Utah blows up and BJ falls flat, it'll get ugly with this fanbase and rightfully so.

Jason Shay resigns as ETSU men’s basketball coach

The university and men’s basketball program faced immense backlash after the team was seen kneeling during the playing of the national anthem before the Feb. 15 game at Chattanooga. An ETSU official confirmed to News Channel 11 that the team had kneeled prior to other games as well.

When Shay addressed the matter a few days after the Chattanooga game, he said his team meant no disrespect toward the country’s flag or veterans.

“It was a decision our team made prior to the season as a call to action and empowerment against racial inequalities and injustices,” Shay said on Feb. 17.

Lawmakers took issue with the team’s conduct. Rep. Diana Harshbarger called the kneeling “disrespectful.” State Sen. Rusty Crowe said such conduct “will not be tolerated.” During the university’s budget hearing, state Sen. Jon Lundberg compared kneeling during the national anthem to flipping off the American flag.

Is this outrage that resulted in Shay resigning more or less stupid than the Tracy Claeys outrage that significantly contributed to his firing?

Two thoughts:

1) Canceled! He was canceled!

2) If I ever open a bar in Tennessee I am calling it The Rusty Crow.

Now will be up to "friends of Texas basketball" to see just how wide they're willing to open their ATM withdrawals to try to match Duke, UNC, Kentucky, and Kansas for the 5*. Orange is the new Blue?

Would this be the equivalent of if a successful coach left MN for like Iowa or Wisconsin? Sucks to lose a coach to a rival.
