Leidner Out Vs. MD

If this were Pro football that hit would have incurred a big fine from the NFL

OOOOOH, the 'non targeting helmet to helmet' hit?

There needs to be repercussion for such a hit even if the game officials missed the call during live action. The Iowa player that hit Mitch Leidner helmet to chin should have to sit out the next Iowa game for that obvious targeting hit.

I'm surprised that Rhoda is starting. Not sure how many things I can be wrong about - but I hope we can add my opinion that Demry is the better choice to that list.

Ahhh, yeah, we already discussed this one to death. This is obviously not mop up duty...not surprised at all that Rhoda starts. He is the backup.

Did they tell you if Claeys was told what was up with Mitch before the conference?

If so this source really spilled a lot of beans...

Wait, you really think I (and MANY others) knew about this on Saturday night but the Head Coach didn't?

These two events aren't even close. Morris couldn't walk on his own at one point and was still put back in.

Actually, after the sack, Mitch had to be helped to his feet and was visibly wobbly. I immediately turned to the guy next to me and said he looks woozy and they need to take him out. Next play confirmed it...he looked lost out there. Was pretty shocked when he came out for next series.

The hit was ugly, but he looks fine on the next play when you watch the video...

This team should have the jug, pig and bell in Claey's first seven BT games as head coach. I can see that impacting their thoughts on Tracy.

The jug, yes. The pig, probably. The other, who the hell cares but they did squander a great opportunity for a "W".

If the concussion is correct, TC is gone. The sideline Doctors are in trouble.

Yeah if Claeys got the bell.... i don't think we'd be giving him much extra credit for that.

Also the Chair damn it!

You’re arguing with the likes of people who think the ticket price increase was a good idea, big donations for the new athletic facilities is any day now, and playing in the whatever bowl against middle michigan was some kind of accomplishment.

"I know that there's a [medical] spotter in the booth, white hats," Claeys said in his press conference. "All of the officials have the authority to stop the game, if they notice anything. Nobody on our sidelines, so he ended up having the symptoms after the game. Even after I talked to him as a team and that, I guess, after he went over and sat down."

Maybe you're both right. Judging by the article, he was checked right away. It appears that after the coaching staff addressed the players postgame is when Leidner starting showing symptoms. Maybe it was highly probable that Mitch was diagnosed with a concussion, but TC was not 100% sure on it yet, or wasn't willingly to divulge that information Sunday morning.

They're all 100% noticeable ... when you want a new coach...

Well said....the only way Claeys or the medical staff gets in trouble is if they knew during the game Mitch had a concussion and they sent him back out there anyway. If they legitimately did not know till after the game then they didn't do anything wrong.

Clay said today that Rhoda is starting because they would still like to RedShirt Demry. If Rhoda holds up and Leidner comes back this will be possible. If Rhoda gets hurt before Leidner
cames back they will have to pull his red shirt.

That was horrible with Morris, he was collapsing on the field. Reflected very badly on Hoke - Besides the back-up (former starter) was a better player.

Judging by the article, he was checked right away.

Yes, the article states that Claeys said he was checked right away, but if you can discern that from the Claeys quote provided to support that claim, you possess some skill I don't:
"I know that there's a [medical] spotter in the booth, white hats," Claeys said in his press conference. "All of the officials have the authority to stop the game, if they notice anything. Nobody on our sidelines, so he ended up having the symptoms after the game. Even after I talked to him as a team and that, I guess, after he went over and sat down."

In an interview, Claeys said he often does media interviews on Sunday, and he "doesn't want to talk about injuries," so he deliberately does not meet with the medical staff until 2:00pm on Sunday. That way, he puts himself in a position where he can say truthfully that he doesn't know about an injured player's status, because he hasn't met with the medical staff yet.

Strikes me as very politician-like - plausible deniability - when a coach deliberately avoids learning about the medical status of his players so he can say he didn't lie to the media.

You're comparing a legal hit to a hit that was 1-3 seconds after the play. Look at the clip. Mitch turns up field, gets drilled in front of three officials and not one player on our sideline took exception to the hit. One coach possibly looks to question the hit from the clip.

Ok. I'm telling you that one kind of defenseless player is a player who has given himself up. Running out of bounds or sliding are defenseless player situations. I'm not saying Mitch was for sure defenseless, I'm saying you could make that argument and your analysis leaves out that possibility.

I think the only way anything would happen during the season is if the team were to drop the next couple as well. Say they go on the road to Maryland and get beat and then turn around and lose at home to a garbage Rutgers team, I think at that point the calls for Claeys to be fired would be pretty loud.

I would fully expect however for Coyle to let the year play out and then make a decision after the season as to what to do with Claeys.

Agreed. Coyle seems like a guy who is thoughtful and measured with his decisions though, and would want to send a message of supporting coaches. Who knows though, he's only been here a few months.

Yes, it does. Mason used to be criticized all the time because he wouldn't share player injuries, citing data privacy for students. It would still get out, but never from Mason.

Here is what I think before and after 12 pages

If Mitch is cleared, he will start.
If Mitch is not cleared, Rhoda will start and it's because he is the number 2 guy. If that doesn't happen and I'm a player... I lose all trust in my coaching staff.
I usually watch quarterbacks pretty closely...Mitch has a history of taking shots and dusting himself off...I didn't see any signs of a concussion. He gets rocked often. Obviously, neither did the officials, the medical staff or the coaching staff or any concerned players. So, to doubt Tracy's knowledge of a concussion during the game or criticize for lack of it, seems like somebody's agenda. After the game, we don't know what we don't know to be able to point fingers.

Don't hear the noise, find a way to beat Maryland is the focus for the Gophers.

Edit: After reading press conference transcript:
Wow, just wow!!! Q. Obviously, Conner ran the back-up job in camp. What did you see from him in camp?
COACH CLAEYS: "Yeah. He does a good job. He understands what we're trying do and, you know, so he did a nice job. And then the other thing was, with Demry, we like to get the redshirt back on him. Obviously that will be re-evaluated now this week. And so we'll practice and Connor will start, and we'll do what he can do best along with everybody else, and their strong points. That's what we'll emphasize and go to battle."
Thanks for the confidence coach! I'm number two only because you want to redshirt the real number two. And now that I might get an opportunity to play, you might change your mind....I'm sorry, blaming the O-Line for Brooks not carrying the ball vs Iowa, saying we played great at Penn State and now these comments prior to the number two QB maybe playing...but maybe not because we really liked Demry better all along...that doesn't just effect the head of one backup player. The whole team goes...what? How do I know when he's telling the truth? Add all the other stuff: passing more with a lead in the last two games than we run, most penalized team in the Big Ten and 100 other difficult to ignore glaring points make it tough, in answer to the question why some are turning on Tracy so fast.

I only heard part of the interview, but it sounded like they said that they would like to redshirt Demry, but not that that was the only reason Rhoda was number two.

Ugly stuff!
