Wow McKinley Boston confirms Gophers AT New Mex St next yr; financial wash

I'm doubt Norwood and Kill come on Gopherhole and think "So this is what the fanbase really thinks? We'd better change our scheduling philosophy or we're going to lose a lot of fans!" I doubt they care what posters on this board think.

He didn't say that Norwood or Kill came here, he said the reader should look at how many of the folks trying to downplay this fiasco used the defense that "we'll get another home game out of it".

...well, it's now looking like NOT getting another home game is a realistic possibility. And if we DON'T get another home game, and replace a home and home against UNC with a home and home against NMSU, this moves looks even MORE financially irresponsible. This is a total flake job.

I'm not even gonna argue the scheduling philosophy. If they wanna play easier opponents, fine. But they simply should have done NOTHING. Played UNC and then not scheduled teams like that again. The fact that they are using time and financial resources to GET OUT OF GAMES, and COMPLETELY ignoring the PR angle is very disturbing when the easiest (and best) course is simply to do NOTHING.

Ye gads, there are so many things I would like to say, but I have be asked by GopherHole Admin to stop badmouthing commentors comments.

So I will simply use dpodolls all time, top shelf, applicable to all, applicable anywhere and anytime, the best of the best, as it pertains to so, so many:

"congratulations on reaching an epic-heretofore-unheard-of-level-of-dumbassery" .

Doc, don't listen to them for a minute; if you do, you'll be rendered dumb.

As has been discussed ad nauseum, I disagree to the decision about canceling the NC series (I recognize that I am not an expert like Kill and Norwood are, but hey, these type of fansites are designed for armchair quarterbacks/coaches/directors). But the powers that be disagreeing with me is not my biggest concern (if they listened to me, Elliot Eliason would probably be playing LW on the 4th line of the hockey team and football/basketball/hockey would probably all be 0 win programs). What troubles me is that, as ticket holders, we have a financial stake in this program. We have the right as paying customers to ask for a rational for a given decision as we did when UNC was initially canceled. In turn, the administration has every right to say "this is an internal decision, we have a process, and we aren't going to get into rationalizing every decision with the fan base." Would that annoy me? Yes. Would it infuriate me? No. What really bothers me, is that instead of saying "none of your business", the program told a bold-faced lie to its supporters. We were told that this was done to get us an extra home game, and instead we swapped one home and home series for another. That shows a huge lack of respect for the supporters of this program. As much as we like to get into pissing matches about who is a real Gopher fan and what makes a good Gopher fan ("you aren't a real fan because you dare to criticize", "you aren't a real fan because you dare to accept mediocrity", etc.), everyone who is still a supporter of this program is a diehard, because we have been absolutely shat on (experiencing a 0 win conference season, losing 8 straight games to our rival, the biggest blown lead in bowl game history, a 55-0 lost to our secondary rival at home) and yet we still care enough to purchase tickets and bicker on here. I am fuming about being lied to despite my continuing support (which will still continue, already trash talking my Badger fans about the piss-pounding coming their way on Saturday). That I think is the real problem here.

Don, feel free to criticize me, whatever the admins say. Coming from a Doc like you, its practically medical advice.

Great post couldn't agree with u more.

With the "bleep-"storm that this has caused that's not surprise.
Teague needs to get a better opponent or an extra Home Game to calm this down.

To my point, this is mainly an issue on this board and the local media.

the program told a bold-faced lie to its supporters. We were told that this was done to get us an extra home game, and instead we swapped one home and home series for another.

It's been reported by several sources that the @NMSU 2013/vs. NMSU 2014 is by no means a done deal.

The only way any of this has made sense from an athletic department standpoint is if we get an extra home game out of the deal, so I sincerely hope that it is not a done deal.

FYI - Teague was just on KFAN with Barrerio and Mase. Here's what KFAN Tweeted:

Teague playing with Mase in your Face bit: "I've had plenty in my face since we did the Carolina thing." #Gophers

Teague on Carolina: "When Jerry and I first talked about it, I was hesitant to say the least. With time I said I want to support Jerry."

Teague: "It's a tough call. And I'm sorry if we ticked a lot of people off, we don't want to do that." #Gophers

Teague: "We've got a ways to go and we have to give ourselves some momentum." #Gophers

NT is making damn sure everyone knows this was Jerry's idea and not his. Not that JK is denying it or anything.

Including the unscheduled Press Conference, that's what his 3rd, 4th or 5th public appearance to defend dropping UNC? Plus an interview with Walters and who knows who else? Anybody still clinging to the idea that's it's just a few cranks on Gopher Hole who are driving this?

Fresno State. That's a little better.

Ah, Fresno State is pretty decent. We have just as good a chance beating them as we do the Tar Heels. Problem is, beating Fresno won't look nearly as good to voters as beating UNC would have. Dumb move!

I am hoping your right, because I would match rather be wrong and get egg on my face on Gopher hole than find out that my program has so little respect for its fans that they will lie to us.

Conversation in NMSU athletic department (with apologies to afurry91)

AD: "Coach I got some good news!"
Coach: "I could use some good news. We've been kicked out of the WAC, we've got no one on the schedule, I can't recruit one-stars to this bunghole town and the gunfire from the border has been keeping me up every night. The only good thing that's happened in the last decade is us winning that game up in Minnesota last year"
AD: "That's the good news! We've got two more games with Minnesota!"
Coach: "We already were going up there in '16, now we're going up there two more times? Actually that sounds o.k. to me, lot cooler there than here in August. Plus we own them. Kinda creepy the way their coach keeled over like that last year, hope that doesn't happen again."
AD: "No, coach, they are coming here next year!"
Coach: "You gotta be ****ing me. Here?"
AD: "Yea, I just got off the phone with their AD; a home-and-home series"
Coach: "Was he drunk?"
AD: "Don't know. He did say how he was looking forward to renewing the Big10/PAC10 rivalry though."
Coach: "Jesus, you think he thought we are Arizona State?"
AD: "Maybe. He did ask how far the Hoover Dam was from campus."
Coach: "What did you say?"
AD: (with big smile) "I said it was easy driving distance."
Coach: "I love you"

The people driving this are the same people that got Mase fired after the 2nd half meltdown. These are the people that write the BIG checks. You don't think they're embarrassed by this?

haha well done. I could read a thread full of these.

Doogie with a Q&A with Teague:

Teague speaks

The vibe from Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague and others in the Bierman Building is that a low-level bowl game at six wins is far more important than stiff competition in early September.

That explains football coach Jerry Kill's desire, and the athletic department's willingness, to cancel the Gophers' home-and-home series with North Carolina at a cost of $800,000.

Teague will tour the facilities at the University of Wisconsin on Saturday morning. He did the same at Iowa in late September.

The following are excerpts from a lengthy Q&A session with Teague on Thursday:

How sick are you of North Carolina cancellation questions?

I'm not sick at all. You know I feel bad. It was a tough call to do this and Jerry (Kill) doesn't take it lightly either. I know fans are frustrated, but it just comes down to where we feel our program is now and we want to build confidence in the non-conference arena.

Because of this decision, there's a perception that you're a lightweight like former AD Joel Maturi was at times.

(Laughs) The tougher decision was doing this. The easy thing would've been to tell Jerry no. I get to deal with Jerry every day. I think the public might forget that we work together every hour of every day -- lots of phone calls. It was important to me early on that we show support in a big decision for him. We can argue it all you want. I hope we can get past it and move on.

Was there any hesitation on sending out the press release Saturday that Kill had suffered another seizure?

We knew people were going to find out. We felt it was best to be up front and hit it head on.

How much do you now know about seizures?

I learned a lot about seizures being with him and the doctors over the weekend. It's just something he deals with. I know it sounds terrible and life-threatening, but after talking to the doctors, I realize it's just a condition he has. He's in excellent health. His vitals were good before and after. We just got to support him and build a good structure around him.

He thinks he's the right guy for this job, but is it possible this job isn't right for him?

I absolutely 110 percent think it's the right job for him. He's a unique bird. He's a relentless guy. It's really amazing that he's won at every stop at hard jobs. The struggles we'll have and have had are a part of the process. We're not very deep. People have to be patient. I think the great coaches that have built programs have gone through a pretty long process. I hope our fans have that patience.

Go Gophers!!

more from Doogie:

A big factor for the Gophers cancelling the football series with North Carolina slated to start next year is the fact that they're loaded. If this were a mediocre ACC team like Duke, the series would've been maintained.

• A Gophers source said a road game at New Mexico State next year is far from a lock as reported elsewhere. In fact, the Gophers are talking to a few other schools too. The best case scenario is that a school like Western Michigan -- a possibility -- comes to TCF Bank Stadium in 2013 and the Gophers repay that favor with a trip there in four or five years.

If I were Norwood Teague or Jerry Kill, I'd root like hell for UNC to beat Duke this weekend convincingly. UNC already lost to a poor Wake Forest team in Winston-Salem (By the way, Duke won in Winston-Salem this year). If Karma has a say, UNC will get beat.

How exciting! The fanbase should be at a fever pitch.

No kidding! Jeebus Teague just stop talking. The easy thing would have been to tell Jerry no? Wow, just wow. Actually, what you just did was the easy thing. Facing competition would have been the truly hard thing. Hence, the desperate 800 G payout to UNC to avoid playing them at any cost. Kill and Teague are getting exactly what they deserve and with these types of comments and people's subsequent reactions. This whole searching for an applicable rationale that is going to satisfy folks isn't going to work. Just shut up, tell folks that you support the team, support coach Kill, understand that people are ticked off and hope beyond hope that Kill starts winning lots of games pretty darn soon.

So....three days later....and my worst-case scenario has come true?

Yes, refusing to do interviews would definitely help.

WMU has just signed Northwestern to their open date. Their OOC schedule is now Michigan State (away), Nicholls State (home), Northwestern (away), and Iowa (away) - that would be a pretty brutal month even for a B1G team with all those away games.

Didn't really read the rest of the previous post did you?

You mean this part?

Just shut up, tell folks that you support the team, support coach Kill, understand that people are ticked off and hope beyond hope that Kill starts winning lots of games pretty darn soon.

Avoiding the questions would be just as bad. Fans and the media would not be satisfied because it would sound like he doesn't know what he is doing.

You mean this part?

Avoiding the questions would be just as bad. Fans and the media would not be satisfied because it would sound like he doesn't know what he is doing.

A couple of things here:

1. He already sounds like he doesn't know what he's doing. And so does Kill. That's why both of them keep having to give interview after interview on this subject. That ship has already sailed. The only thing he can do now is minimize the perceived damage already done. Continuing to talk ad naseum about how much better North Carolina is than us isn't going to satisfy anybody that actually pays good money to watch this team on Saturdays. Like I said, the damage is already done. A lot of ticket holders are ticked off that the AD and coach have all but stated the program stinks, yet still want people to attend games like things are just peachy at the Bank every Saturday.

2. With the damage already having been done, he should simply state that he's answered all these questions already and that he's sorry that it's ticked everybody off. Fortunately for him, he's already done that. Whether or not you agree with the decision or not, Kill and Teague couldn't have handled this much worse. At this point, the only thing he should be telling (or asking for in this case imo.) is that the fanbase stay with them through this. That's going to really hard as is because of how much of a mess they've made with this situation. But at this point, that's their only option. They've made a decision that's going to be laughed at and ridiculed by both fans and local media for a LONG time. The only way for them to even begin moving forward is by pleading with fans to stick it out. But make no mistake, there is no magic fix for this. The perception at this point is going to be bad regardless.
