Wow McKinley Boston confirms Gophers AT New Mex St next yr; financial wash

I will copy what I said on another thread:

"What I don't understand with all of the turmoil about this, is why we weren't this up in arms when Texas and Navy cancelled games with us? That pisses me off more than this fiasco. "

Because they were the ones cancelling the games not us. In this case we are the ones backing out and not only that we are paying a lot of money to do it.

Incorrect. A Sagarin rating of #22 and receiving poll votes doesn't constitute average. Sorry.

Wrong blowing out elon and Idaho doesn't make you a top 25 team no matter who voted. Squeaking out a win vs Miami and losing to wake hurts because both teams are bad. We would be their equal this year

Jeff Sagarin, widely respected, referenced, and cited statistician, needs to fix his obviously biased statistical analysis because GopherHole poster lakesgopher knows more about statistics than he does. And, we must ask ourselves, why wouldn't he be biased toward an ACC team? Everyone knows that everyone is biased toward the powerhouse ACC football programs. They receive a bump whether they want to or not.

Ndsu was ahead of tech, ucla, and others for most of the season by sagarin. At that point it lost credibility

My whole issue is the money, period. I just don't want Kill complaining about needing facility upgrades to compete and asking for donations when they IMO wasted money on something like this. The money could have been used to upgrade the football or other Athletic Dept. facilities( BB practice facility). I would venture a guess that many donors are questioning where their money is being spent in light of this

If you go strictly off stats without considering the opponent you have lost credibility. Mason ballooned our stats every season by Piss pounding terrible mom conf teams. Now go through UNC'a schedule and tell me who we lose to? Miami and Louisville are the only I can see. And neither of those teams make me think they would blow us out

You're unbelievable. You honestly think you know more about statistics than Jeff F'ing Sagarin. I'm seriously dumbfounded. Congratulations - I now put absolutely zero stock in anything you have to say about anything.

Nope I am a social studies teacher sagarin is a math wiz. I never said I know more than him, I said UNC has ballooned their stats vs bad teams and it helps them with sagarin. I think the fact ndsu is ranked in sagarin as high as they are is a joke. No fcs team should ever be higher than 60 IMO and the fact you put so much stock into sagarin tells me you don't watch the games UNC is not a great team they are a middle of the road team

If what I read was correct, it's bein paid over two years. Out of a 70-90 million dollar budget, you can't find 400,000? Use the bonus alcohol sales that were a late add to the budget...bus to Northwestern next year....use the additional money that that outside ticket selling group is generating, it was supposed to be over a million. For the many on this board who only care about the big three at the U, it would take you approximately five minutes to find that amount in the budget.

doesn't understand statistics, particularly Sagarin's methodology

The thing about this is that they are saying they want to build a program that is strong and the state can take pride in and then they shrink back from what might be a stronger non-conference opponent along with people sick of a false sense of strength through the non-conf schedule like this year where they barely won the games, yet fall flat on their face against B1G teams who they should have done better against. They should have kept North Carolina on just for dignity sake alone.

You're cute. You must not realize the games are played on the field not on a calculator.

Ye gads, there are so many things I would like to say, but I have be asked by GopherHole Admin to stop badmouthing commentors comments.

So I will simply use dpodolls all time, top shelf, applicable to all, applicable anywhere and anytime, the best of the best, as it pertains to so, so many:

"congratulations on reaching an epic-heretofore-unheard-of-level-of-dumbassery" .

Hahaha the way you defend dpo I have to assume you guys are an item

You are totally wrong. dpo brings thought and proof to the board, and yes, sometimes goes a little overboard. But he has my respect even if I disagree on some things he says. But I know who, and who not, to get into pissing contests with. I learned the hard way. It ain't worth wetting your pants over.

Imagine 2014 with a 4-0 start then at Penn State...who knows what shape they will be in....what will ticket sales be with Northwestern and Michigan coming to town after a 5-0 start?

what were the ticket sales this year after a 4-1 start with Norhtwestern coming to town for homecoming?

No one is going to buy into a 4-0 start with this type of non-conference scheduled. Only way people start buying in is conference wins.

Well good for you because I don't respect a person that has shown a never ending desire to tell people they are wrong whether its justified or because someone used poor grammar or the wrong word. IMO he is a "nerd bully"

I suppose whether or not it was a "done deal" could just be semantics.

A lot of fans on the 'Hole thought the Gophers' victory at UNLV was a "done deal" back in April. I didn't feel it was a "done deal" until close to midnight Pacific Time August 30 when the score went final.

Maybe Boston felt the deal was done in principle "months ago" and maybe it wasn't signed until after the presser by Teague (or still isn't). Then both could be correct. I would have to think that they wouldn't have signed anything until after the UNC thing became official. Kind of awkward if you agree to play NMSU then can't come to an agreement not to play UNC...

So.....we will lose $800k.

Is that what I'm now hearing?

$800K plus whatever the lost revenue is between a game with UNC vs NMSU. Probably end up around $1 million? I can live with Kill wanting to follow the Bill Snyder/Glen Mason school of scheduling and go with 4 Cupcakes in the future. But to flush a million bucks to get out of two games like this is totally unacceptable.

If only we had been 4-0 going into conference play this year, imagine how confident we could have been and how much better the games against Iowa and NW would have gone. Oh wait....
Agree with your point on this. I think having to take a few punches in the non conference is the best way to get ready for the conference sched.

But that method hasn't worked either. Hanging with Cal in '09, USC the last two seasons...that's gotten us literally nowhere. So obviously that doesn't prepare you either, at least not around here. Kill is employing a method that not only has worked for him previously, has worked for numerous coaches who have made major turnarounds starting at woebegone programs. I couldn't care less if we play UNC, I care about winning more games period. And I'm not talking about 6-6, I'm talking about conference wins, and major bowl appearances. If Kill does that, he can schedule whoever he wants IMO.

Perhaps we should just let this dude do it his way and let the chips fall where they may. You can be mad about the cash aspect, but regarding the schedule, it is so miniscule to the big scheme. If he wins enough, people won't care if we played UNC those random two years or not. And if we don't win enough, that won't be the reason why we didn't win enough.

Go Gophers!!

I'm sure the NMSU players and staff -- who beat the Gophers last year -- appreciate those kinds of comments!

Hearing that the #Gophers football team going to New Mexico State next year is far from a done deal.

With the "bleep-"storm that this has caused that's not surprise. Teague and Kill both seem to have been blind-sided by the negative response this has generated. The e-mails from Season Ticket Holders and donors were probably also a surprise.

Teague needs to get a better opponent or an extra Home Game to calm this down. If you don't believe that take a look at yesterdays posts defending dropping the UNC game. Look how many used the "but we're getting an extra Home Game out of it".

Yeah, this isn't done yet.

..or maybe Norwood's frantically calling Fresno State.:)

I'm doubt Norwood and Kill come on Gopherhole and think "So this is what the fanbase really thinks? We'd better change our scheduling philosophy or we're going to lose a lot of fans!" I doubt they care what posters on this board think.
