Wow McKinley Boston confirms Gophers AT New Mex St next yr; financial wash

We won't be getting it back in the form of an additional home game it would appear. But hey is this really a problem? I mean we have one of those athletic departments that can just print money, 800K, that is just a drop in the bucket when you make the kind of revenue we do....

Hell yeah! Think of how much revenue will be generated by the hundreds of free tickets and thousands of $10 tickets that will out there for that NMSU game!

Yep, and don't forget 4-0 and hosting Iowa at the Bank on Sept. 28, 2013. Hopefully a night game. We know you'll be there.

Imagine the momentum if we had beat UNC! In either '13 or '14, we could have been heading into the BT play with a 4-0 record with a win over UNC. Heck, 3-1 with a loss to UNC ain't bad in one of those years. At least we don't come out looking like pansies by cancelling one home/home for another just because our coach doesn't think his team will be good enough in years 3 and 4 of his regime to beat an average BCS team.

I'm excited, I can't wait to make the 20-30 mile drive down to Ciudad Juarez to check out how the drug cartels opperate as part of the fabulous weekend in NM. Maybe Creative Charters can make some sort of transport deal with the cartels in exchange for a tour of their underground tunnels and drug and weapon supplies. The tour will be real and it will be raw but most likely it will be real raw.

Real. Raw. Real raw.

They should just setup an office for Jerry on the Mall. He is going to be tired having to stand there every week begging students to come and trying to give out those free tickets.

So.....we will lose $800k.

Is that what I'm now hearing?

Potentially more. What sells more tickets and puts more butts in the seats in '14. Home game against UNC or New Mexico St, all else held equal like kick-off time?

Where does my analogy fail?

Suppose I teach for a living. There's a hard week of my semester coming up where I find the material very demanding in the classroom.

But I have an idea!

I will ask my department head to find somebody else to teach that class, and I will be willing to do something else.

My department head says, "Okay, but we'd have to pay that person to do your job." I ask, "How much?" The answer is, "A little bit more than you make in an entire year."

Am I correct that this conversation has become surreal?

They would have required a ticket be purchased for NMSU if buying for Wisconsin, Iowa or Nebraska.

Iowa/Wisconsin/Nebraska are coming here next year. New Mexico State is coming here the year after.

Go Gophers!!

That brings up a good point. There goes tieing the NMST game in the '13 schedule. There is no game in the '14 schedule that will allow the program to tie to the NMST game that year. The home schedule in '14 won't have any natural sellouts (i.e. without drastically discouting single game tickets).

So Syracuse was a bigger draw than Northwestern according to attendance announced.

New Hampshire was a bigger draw than Western Michigan.

If the Gophers break out in year three like Mase was able to do and Kill was able to do in his previous stops, the difference in ticket sales between the two will be negligible.

Imagine 2014 with a 4-0 start then at Penn State...who knows what shape they will be in....what will ticket sales be with Northwestern and Michigan coming to town after a 5-0 start?

2013...4-0 with Iowa coming to the bank? Think anyone will care about no trip to Chapel Hill if the Gophers beat the Hawkeyes again?

Outside of the improved odds of getting a win there really are no other positives that go along with this change. Just a coach looking to pad his overall record and pat himself on the back for getting to a bowl game.

Syracuse was a night game on a beautiful night. We were 3-0 and cuse looked like a legit offense going into the game. Fans wanted to see if we were for real or fake. NU was a day game after we were throttled by Iowa and fans all over were saying "same old gophers" plus the weather wasn't supposed to be good and it wasn't. My shoes are still wet. Now if we go 4-0 and we win by 30 every game and are competitive at psu or win then we would have momentum going into NU and Mich

Lets not also forget that the gophers sold a ton of tickets after they lowered the price to 10 bucks for Syracuse.

Good point and if Iowa WINS, how many Gophers will be screaming "But we're Four and One!!! " Think any Gopher fan would be pissed if they went 3-1 and then beat Iowa?

Oh, and how many free or heavily discounted tickets for New Hampshire or Western Michigan? The point is if they sucked it up and played UNC and THEN scheduled "lesser" programs then there's little of no outrage. Many of us would have been silent if they got out of their obligation without writing $800,000 worth of checks, but they didn't.

The heat they're getting is well deserved.

KFAN and 1500 are still hammering us right now. Judd and Phunn have spent 3 segments on this and are taking callers this morning and people are PISSED.

They also think that coaches will use this against us in recruiting.

Go Gophers!!

You hit the nail on the head. Just play the games on the schedule even if you are not happy with it. Believe in your team and coach them up to go get the victory. How they can justify spending this kind of money to get out of a game is beyond me. What I still can't figure out is why the president would sign off on it as well....what a waste.

I'm guessing he mixed up Fresno State & San Jose State.

The guy calling in requesting they cover DIII programs more made me laugh real hard.

Bleed, what else is new? If we loose big, Gophers are worthless. If we loose barely, Gophers are worthless. If we barely win, Gophers are worthless, we should have won by more. If we win big, Gophers are worthless, we should have won bigger. No matter what, people ARE PISSED.

I blame it all on the world economy. :)

This has become a PR disaster for the U. They've managed to piss off even their most loyal fans, which they can ill afford to do.

I will copy what I said on another thread:

"What I don't understand with all of the turmoil about this, is why we weren't this up in arms when Texas and Navy cancelled games with us? That pisses me off more than this fiasco. "

Don,

I was upset at Baylor and Iowa State cancelling on us too.Texas and Navy? Not so much. Texas was a big reach and Navy is just another non-BCS team.

Baylor ended-up writing us a check. Still didn't make me happy. Rather surprisingly, didn't make Mason happy ether. The question then becomes did we right a check for 800K in those cases?

Nope. There's where a whole lot of the "turmoil" is coming from. Rightfully so too.

Again, for at least the 3rd time now - not average. Better than average. Really hurts you as a Duke fan to admit that UNC is better than average at football, doesn't it?

They were better than average but currently UNC is very average.
