WCCO: Source: Gophers Express Interest In Rich Pitino

A retweet from Phil Mackey:

RT @rickbozich: Word around U of L is Richard Pitino in negotiations with Minnesota...

Looks like it's nearly a done deal with the other tweets
I've heard this before during this ordeal...

In all seriousness, I want and wanted Flip, but understand the dream is dying or dead. I'm willing to take a flyer on this Pitino guy, it looks tough to get any 1 of the Big 3 unfortunately.

Watched his team in their conference championship and wasn't real impressed I'd rather take a chance and go with an assistant from a bigger program, someone like Stephens.

Just got this tweet:

@ZachCronen: Dad knows a FIU assistant who said that confirmed Pitino is coming to the Gophs. @NadineBabu

No clue who Zach is, but thought I'd share.

I can see some people having kind of a blah reaction to this if it is Pitino, just cause he's so young and isn't loaded with head coaching experience. He might take a few lumps coaching in the B1G I'm afraid, but hopefully those would be minimized.

Yes, I'll be happy if his new team is in its conference championship next year and I'm not real impressed.

The fact that you watched that team in a conference championship is an amazing accomplishment. That was the worst program in college basketball before he arrived.

I like the assistants too, but Pitino was one of those top notch assistants before last year.

Hard to look impressive with only three scholarship players. Also hard to make a conference championship with only three players.

I'm willing to bet most people on this board had never heard of the younger Pitino until today so it's funny to see so many folks applauding this possible hire. This would be quite a reach for AD Norwood Teague. If his last name wasn't Pitino there would outrage.

Please let this be true. Time to end this sucker.

You mean like Pitino had been previous to one season at a bad FIU program?

How interesting and true too. It's also interesting to note how close Pittino Senior and Tubby have been. It's pretty safe to say then that the Pittinos must have contacted Tubby for his thought's on the Gophers. If this deal goes through it's important to note that Mr.Smith did nothing to squirrel it and certainly helped it along.

Me too!

I'm already to the point where I'm going to be devastated if we don't hire this kid. :D

I wanted Brad Stevens..Flip made sense to me for big picture reasons..then I freaked out when they offered Cronin...I wanted Enfield but knew he wasn't coming (USC will be in NCAA tournament next year)...I was scared to death we'd hire a retread guy that would be just settling to make a hire....I wanted the best assistant coach and it seems we got an assistant a smidge better than that with one very good season as a head coach. Excellent!

I think Enfield and Rich Pitino have very similar qualities and pathes. Enfield is more laid back. Pitino more emotional. Both obviously able to develop the talent on hand. Both wanna run You know Pitino wants to press. Anxious for this to happen!

I don't know about that. It got a lot of coverage because of the Isiah Thomas fiasco at FIU before Pitino arrived. For people who follow the assistant coaches, he has had a relatively big name for a bit too.

@gopherhole: If #Gophers hire Richard Pitino, we'll get lots of pub during Louisville Final Four game on Saturday night. Nice little bonus.

Go Gophers!!

Not saying your wrong, the theory makes perfect sense. Have to admit being surprised though by the kid's resume. You?

Yep, they are very similar coaches.
Both out of the Florida/Louisville type molds. Both like to run and play wide open. Both young and they both had miraculous seasons for small schools in Florida. (Pitino had a vast improvement and played in the conference championship with 3 scholarship players).

I'm not sold on Rich Pitino, but I think I could quickly get on board.

Putting your own tweets on Gopherhole is kind of redundant isn't is?

I knew of him, but didn't think that was even on the radar of possibilities. To me, this would be a pretty low on the list type hire, but after going through the established guys, you could do a lot worse when it comes to the younger crop coming up.
