WCCO: Source: Gophers Express Interest In Rich Pitino

Saul Smith and Richard Pitino are good buddies from when Tubby was on Pitino's staff when they were kids at Kentucky.

How about Saul Smith and Ryan Saunders as assistants? Hahaha just to troll the fan base.

If this goes through, let's all head to Bogart's!

Just filed to ESPN, story coming, Minnesota close to finalizing a deal with FIU coach Richard Pitino.

If he's a great recruiter, it's a great hire. The coaching will take care of itself, if you get the right players.

The fact that you watched that team in a conference championship is an amazing accomplishment. That was the worst program in college basketball before he arrived.

I like the assistants too, but Pitino was one of those top notch assistants before last year.
Yeah I don't mind the choice but was really wanting it to be Stephens because of the established recruiting relationship with the big 3 and how well he works with the bigs.

Good sign. As far as how the players may react.

Pitino son as U of M coach!!! I like it that's what the players need right now someone young and energetic

He's not here yet boys. Hopefully he'll time it right to come in after the shift change when the booth girls are still fresh and perky. The one currently behind the glass has been going through the motions for the last 7-8 hours.

Want Rich to have a good first impression of MN.

I'm willing to bet most people on this board had never heard of the younger Pitino until today

Contrary to your belief, other people on Earth besides you follow sports and are knowledgeable about them.

I like that they're all basically like "YES, he'll have success there, then we can lure him away whenever we want him back!"

And I'd be perfectly fine with that if it played out that way LOL

Yeah I read that and thought the same. Fine, I'll take the success. It will be easier to find a replacement.

I'll be honest, I'm more of a hockey & football guy so I don't know a lot, but to educate myself, I usually go to opposing message boards to find out information. The general consensus from Louisville's scout fourm ranges from the following:
-Great hire for Minnesota
-A few surprised this quickly to a big conference job, but pretty much put him in high regards
-Some licking their chops as they say it will be nice when he has 5-6 years of big conference experience under his belt when Louisville snatches him away
-Big Ten teams better get ready for a different style of basketball
-One said "would he be better off holding out for the Rutgers job over Minnesota."

Like I said, I'm kind of a Johnny-Come-Lately to anything basketball related, but I consider myself intrigued, fired up & on board. Unless a Buzz Williams type was actually going to come here, I'm on board with taking a swing.

EDIT* Damn you, Bleed Gopher, being quicker on the typing draw than me. ;)

All the negativity on this board sucks

Hopefully this young man isn't a sleeze like his old man.

I wonder if he was the product of one of the the old man's affairs in the booth of restaurant after closing time?

Sid probably won't know the difference between the Pitinos. He probably thinks we're getting Dad, who I'm sure is a "close, personal friend" of his.

Arizona State assistant coach Eric Musselman was supposed to interview for the job, but was told Tuesday not to fly to Fort Myers because the Gophers had their coach.

Well no wonder we can't track flights if he is sending them to Fort Myers. WTF Teague!

I think it has been proven that, while lacking tact - and maybe even a little bit because of it - Sid asked, by far, the best question at the Teague presser.

Having read Sid articles since the old days of "PEACH SPORTS" section of Star-Tribune, any "close, personal friend" of Sid's is a "close, personal friend" of mine.

I'll admit...my initial reaction was "F this"....BUT, after reading more and watching the video posted I don't think he would be a bad guy. Face it...NO ONE knew who Shaka Smart was 5 years ago. Teague gave him a shot and he succeed. I will trust his judgement. Hopefully we can get some momentum behind the practice facility and this guy will recruit his a$$ off.

ESPN source:

Highlight of the article:

"A source with knowledge of the situation said Pitino and Minnesota were working on a contract. Arizona State assistant coach Eric Musselman was supposed to interview for the job, but was told Tuesday not to fly to Fort Myers because the Gophers had their coach.'

"The two sides met Tuesday in Fort Myers, Fla., according to another source."

from the article.

per Andy Katz:

And no one, not even richmondinsider, knew that Teague was in Fort Myers. Pav and MoMO are not as reliable as we thought.

That Norwood is a sneaky guy.

this hire would likely make a favorable impression on the big 3 juniors: wide open style of play, young guy with some solid experience, connections to just about every big time program in the game.

my initial reaction is that this was well played by mr. teague - promising in both the short and long terms while having his back against the wall.
