WCCO: Source: Gophers Express Interest In Rich Pitino

ESPN source:

Highlight of the article:

"A source with knowledge of the situation said Pitino and Minnesota were working on a contract. Arizona State assistant coach Eric Musselman was supposed to interview for the job, but was told Tuesday not to fly to Fort Myers because the Gophers had their coach.'

Glad it didn't get to Mussleman, I would have hated it if he was the choice.

this hire would likely make a favorable impression on the big 3 juniors: wide open style of play, young guy with some solid experience, connections to just about every big time program in the game.

my initial reaction is that this was well played by mr. teague - promising in both the short and long terms while having his back against the wall.

They aren't coming I will bet large sums of money on that

If we get 1 of the 3 I'll consider it a smashing success. Best to judge Lil' Ricky on what he does post Big 3, not pre Big 3.

Hopefully this young man isn't a sleeze like his old man.

I wonder if he was the product of one of the the old man's affairs in the booth of restaurant after closing time?

Um....I hope he is a sleeze like his old man. Being sleezy get's you recruits being a criminal gets you in trouble. I'm just fine with sleezy.

I don't quite agree with you. This may be a great hire, but lets not kid ourselves that this is anything but a stepping stone. Rick Pitino's kid did not dream of coaching at the University of Minnesota for 35 years. Our chance to win with this hire likely will be with the first 2-3 recruiting years worth of kids. What we should be hoping for is that he is a very "slick" recruiter and gets the Big 3 to stay loyal. The success that follows will probably cost us our coach, but it will put our program on the map for the next coaching search (FYI...I'm fully aware how ridiculous it is to be speculating on our next coaching search before this one is even 100% done yet!).

I was going to bring his name up the other day but was too lazy to log in. Thought if we were going the young guy route he was the perfect fit but did not expect he would take the job.

Love the pedigree and who he has worked for.

High risk-high reward. Time will tell. If you are a Gopher fan, you roll with it and support the program.

My goodness, man, are you ever a Minnesotan!!!

Go Gophers!

maybe, but the trend has been the opposite way with guys like smart and stevens staying put. if the practice facility gets done and pitino jr. bulds a recruiting pipeline out to hopkins/de la salle/apple valley, this would be a much better gig than others that have gotten guys to commit long term.

Having read Sid articles since the old days of "PEACH SPORTS" section of Star-Tribune, any "close, personal friend" of Sid's is a "close, personal friend" of mine.

I second that, Dr. Don.

Tubby replaces Pitino, Gillespie replaces Tubby. Tubby replaces Gillespie, Pitino replaces Tubby. Now all they'll have to do is crawl backwards into the womb and their lives will have been perfectly symmetrical.

He's not here yet boys. Hopefully he'll time it right to come in after the shift change when the booth girls are still fresh and perky. The one currently behind the glass has been going through the motions for the last 7-8 hours.

Want Rich to have a good first impression of MN.

HAhahahahahaha.

I think it's too early for a program like ours to take a chance on Rich Pitino, but he's not going to last long at Florida International.

That team couldn't have been more in the dumps. I only follow them at all because of the Isiah thing and Pitino's kid taking over (big enough names to make you look twice at Florida Int'l).

It's still too early for me, but he's an intriguing guy. It might be about a year too early for him.

Wait a year or two more and we aren't on his list at all. It just is the way it is. Enjoy the ride - it will be wild.
