WCCO: Source: Gophers Express Interest In Rich Pitino

If I were him, I wouldn't want to stay in my father's shadows either. I'm not saying that MN would be my ultimate destination if I were him, but I think I would avoid places where my father was an absolute legend. You no longer are judged on whether or not you're a good coach, it becomes whether or not you're as good as a legend.

Credited.

I'm not listening but know it is one of their bits. They get listeners riled up then take a call, play dumb, then ask the caller how much they weigh, and play the sound of a fish being reeled in.

Not a fan of the show but this fish bit is pretty funny.

Intriguing Topic, this one. Now, in reply to you, 07, if he has enough success that he becomes "in demand", the Contract will have a "buyout to resign" clause of so many millions of dollars that other schools will not touch it.

Howeda, your post #111 looks like my post (above) #97, we said the same thing.

Great minds think alike.

Is anyone else listening to kfan right now? Common and Tenna B sound just plain dumb. They are on a 30 minute rant about how the Gophers next head coach is going to be RicK Pitino. A caller just bursted their bubbles!!! HAHAHAHAH and told them Richard Pitino was his son!

Ahhhhhh... Common reels in another one (and I'm sure even more on his program). If common were on Gopherhole, he'd be asking you how much you weigh SPC.

I'm not worried one little bit about this factor either. The last time this program was stepping-stoned in basketball was 1970. If it happens again after 40+ years, it's a risk we can take.

I am Minnesotan, therefore I am more worried about how fast he is stolen away than I am optimistic of him having success here. In a perfect Minnesotan world, not only will he be a bomb here, but he will be hired away after one or two seasons leaving us with an even worse coach.

:)

Then I guess you would support Teague the next time around to find a suitable replacement?

So half the board is worried that he's too young, unproven and living off his last name. The other half is worried that he'll be leaving to coach Louisville next year. Damn we're a schizophrenic fan base.

The other half of living off of Rick Pitino's legacy is that you've spent your whole life learning from Rick Pitino. He seems smart, engaging & energetic. I think he'd be an awesome hire.

And he's been a Billy Donovan assistant, a must for any Woody Teague hire.

Some things I've heard recently have been haunting me. First, I was listening to Handsome Dick Manitoba's show on Little Steven's Underground Garage on XM Radio. Dick said something like he had just played a long set of music by young men in their 20's, and it was a bunch of brilliant classic rock. He said, that's right, pretty much every piece of great rock and roll in history was written and performed by young men in their 20's. Then not too long after that, I don't even remember where I heard this and who said it, but it was pretty much, don't hold young people back. If you've got people in your office who are in their 20's and competent and capable, give them as much as they can handle because they're the ones who have the energy and creativity, and it doesn't make sense to artificially hold them down because they don't have enough experience yet. The best, most talented young people don't need all that experience because they're naturals, and they'll outperform the most experienced hacks who are older. Again, think of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.

Since I heard all that and have had a chance to think about it, I've done everything I can where I am to give our best young professionals as much important work and latitude as I can. And they know when they need help and advice.

What I'm really saying is that I don't care how old a talented young coach is. Even making their mistakes, they'll perform better than the less talented and more experienced people you can find.
I like the thought process-- give him an old, wise assistant to help on the bench and a couple of more young recruiter type assistants and away we go.

I can see your point - but John Thompson III seems to be doing well at GT - on the other hand, Joey Meyer always seemed to have the ghost of his dad hanging over his head

His dad was a head coach at 26. I like the possible hire. Only the geniuses on this board can jump from the nepotism of the Flip Saunders situation to a big daddy anology on Pitino. You guys would bitch if we got Izzo or Coach K. And then of course there is the, if he has any success he is gone crowd. Talk about forever negative.

Wha??? Nate, you DID notice the yellow smiley face after my comments, right?

Interesting from RandBall, maybe he was a target from the get go?

"This norwood" or "our new norwood" isn't hiring Flip.

Let this new norwood hire anyone he darn well pleases. someone like you will get off on the fact that your norwood tanked that deal. BUT, he offered the position to Flip. THAT says a lot to me about the whole situation. He OFFERED Flip. Then he effed the offer up. That pretty much sums up this norwood. And, I will be certain to give him credit if it all works with HIS favorite hire. And if his hire goes to pot...I will hold him completely responsible.

And, if his new hire goes directly into the crapper...norwood and ellis and v-7 and prexy k will follow the swirl on down themselves...to a destination that they so richly deserve. And, once again, we are headed to a place that will remain somewhere between #7 and # 10 in B1G Conference play. And, since we let prexy k and his new norwood do it to us...I guess it is what we deserve and it is who and what we are...in the end, it's pretty damn funny, I guess...

Wren, take it from an old fart...continuously arguing your position on one topic on every thread, in all honesty, becomes a little stale.

Born and raised in the quiet town of Perham. So that actually means I'm within 30 miles of like 4 or 5 of them.

I think the one in Perham is just north of the Country Club, Right? Only played the course once but really enjoyed it. Hell of a facility for a town that size.

Maybe Flip effed the offer up. You don't want this hire if it is indeed the hire to work. A lot of anger in the post. Get what we deserve, are who we are? You post is what's funny.
