Vikings TCF Upgrades

The U was in the driver's seat with the stadium. We should have a favorable deal, if there are any changes that are a problem for us, we ought to have been compensated. If not, we should not have made the deal in the first place.

It doesn't seem to be an unfavorable deal for the U. Unless I am incorrect the vikings are picking up the cost for all changes and upgrades and will pay to put it back the way it was. The U is out nothing in fact they get more publicity for the school when the vikings play there and they are being compensated further by charging rent. What changes are you seeing that are a problem for the U? Free heating system, temporary bleachers, winterizing areas of the stadium that were not before? Some would argue the heating system is a negative but if that were true no NFL team would install them in their own stadium much less someplace they don't permanently play. It's likely the cost to maintain/run the system goes down significantly when you don't have to actually have to use it.

I'm not saying we got a bad deal. I am just saying that if anyone does think so, the U is where the blame should be since we held all the cards. I agree that the upgrades will be nice.

Because the story is about the Vikings, not about the Gophers. If Jay-Z announced he was going to hold a concert at Target Center, you wouldn't have quotes from Rick Adelman and Glen Taylor.

If Jay-Z was going to be making capital improvements and changes to the playing surface, concessions, rest rooms and and seating of Target Center you can bet your sweet bippy you would have quotes from officials(and owners) of Target Center.

If they want to do it right, and that's a big if it would make sense to install the same system and turf they have at Lambeau Field. The turf if a combination of grass and artificial turf. The coils below the surface circulate water not only to keep it from freezing or icing, but also to help the grass grow. Now I am not a rocket scientist, but putting heated blankets over a frozen field should cause some moisture to occur, and when you removed the blanket you've got iced field turf. I hope the U retained the rights to what and how this will be done. I don't trust the Wilf's or Lester Bagely.

why all the Viking hate and mistrust?????

We can be fans for BOTH teams. All The Vikings will do is get the U of M mentioned 100's of times on national TV. Guess what, recruits watch the NFL. The complaining is pitiful.

And Illinois is getting such great recruits now.

Can't figure it out. I remember watching the Bears in 2002 thinking this is going to be a recruiting windfall for Illinois when those five year olds sign their national letters of intent in 12 years.

So if someone is an idiot and thinks this is a bad deal, it's the U's fault. tough crowd

Because the Vikings owners are snake oil salesmen from NJ who have been painfully aggressive negotiators throughout this whole process and we all should keep one hand on our wallets during this process or they will rob us blind again. Everyone loves the Vikings. Their owners are supremely unlikable.

Where will the spring game be played with things under construction until July?

Based on what? Business deals on the East Coast that you have no persona knowledge of? Seems to me they've been willing to spend whatever team needs to put a quality product on the field. I have no issues with the Vikings ownership, nor the improvements they are making to TCF Field. How can those possibly be viewed as a negative in any way. Get real. Go Gophers!

It will never happen. There will never be grass at TCFBS. The U isn't going to pay a staff hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to take care of it. Field turf is very low maintenance. You don't have to mow it 3 times a week, water, feed, de-pest, trim, paint, re-sod.

There is not going to be a heated blanket. We know what we're getting and its just fine for the one game a year the U will need it. In fact: SCORE!

They worked us over on who pays how much for the stadium and they are intent on working over the U, too. He squeezed every last nickel out of everyone else but him to pay for the stadium and he'll squeeze the U's balls as hard as possible too. Truth is Zigballs had zero leverage on the U on this deal we should have gotten a lot more money out of him than we did.

Guessing they won't start any field work until after the spring game. They can start on other areas first.

Congradulations! You seemed to be the only one who has figured that out (I am sure there are many others who also did but decided not to respond). But I am sure that this discussion will still continue anyway.

Different people assess things using different metrics. I think our deal sounds fine. Other people might disagree. All I am saying is that the U was in control of the outcome, whatever you think about it. I am not so presumptuous as to assume that someone is an "idiot" just because they disagree with my assessment of our deal.

It is the same thing as when the U sets ticket prices. I might think the prices are reasonable. Other people might think they are unreasonable. Regardless of the merits of the pricing structure, I don't think it is uncontroversial to suggest that the U is responsible for whatever the prices are.

On a somewhat related note: I was listening to 1500 yesterday, I think it was Ruesse and side-kick, but I don't remember for sure who it was and who said what.

Anyway I believe it was Reusse who brought up Roger Goodell was paid 43 Million last year and asked if people are getting tired of all the money that is paid to pro players etc. The side-kick answered by saying he didn't think that bothered people so much but they are really upset about the 6+ Million that has to be spent to upgrade TCF that will only be used for two years. I about crapped in my pants.

Yeah, we can breed forty new apples but can't grow grass.

This is a great deal for the U and us fans.

1. The U gets a few million dollars from an otherwise empty stadium.
2. More seats for the U to sell at home games with no cost of expansion.
3. Upgraded concessions throughout the stadium plus heated concourse areas.
4. Field heating system for free.
5. New turf after the vikes leave.
6. More seat backs for U fans when the vike season ticket holders pay to rent them.
7. Games in Dec & Jan to bring recruits to for after season visits. Hello Mr. Peterson!
8. More national exposure for our stadium, team and University.
9. I hate the dome and this helps us get rid of that ****bubble!

Are you certain about the heated concourse areas? I haven't seen anything definitive on this issue.

They are business men that will do whatever they can to get the best possible deal but I am still having a really hard time seeing how they are working over the U in this. The people in charge at the U knew where the leverage was and I am sure they got a deal they felt was very fair for the use of the stadium, but hey apparently you know better.

While I haven't seen concourses specifically mentioned, I don't know what else this would be referring to:

"...additional heating in the stadium..."

Rest rooms and concessions. They have running water and liquid products.

However I have heard of heating the concourses also.

Restrooms have always been heated I believe. Lots of people would just hang out in them during games in November.

Just a guess here....maybe the concourses would be heated using those tall portable heaters you see on restaurant patios and such..... I don't see how they could do much else.
