Vikings TCF Upgrades

He's right. It's more energy efficient to leave your air conditioning on at a reasonable temp all summer than to turn it off and on constantly. Same thing applies to this scenario.

Looking for a comparable scenario I found the below link. Heated driveway manufacturers/installers turn the system on only when it is needed and it is more energy efficient. Same would be true of the field unless it is being used daily.

WHO CARES!!! We need it for 1 game a year.

EVERYTHING IS A BONUS.

Wrong. For my money radiant heaters in the concourse would be the No. 1 improvement for Gopher fans. The Twins have almost 400 radiant heaters in their concourses. Gophers fans should expect nothing less.

Target Field Bringing In The Heat

If you build an outdoor ballpark in Minnesota, you’ve got to be ready for cold weather. The Twins added an extra 130 radiant heaters this year, which is about $170,000 worth.

“We watched fans and how they utilized the facility,” said Kevin Smith, Twins Executive Director of Public Relations. “We took some notes and made some recommendations to ownership, and came up with what we call Target Field 2.0.”

They had heaters last year, but only in the infield concourse. Now, they’ve added the outfield.

“We did not use those radiant heaters very much,” said Smith. “There were just a few games in April, because we had that beautiful weather last year that we didn’t need to use them. But when we did, they were very popular.”

FREE SH!T.

Minnesota has 4 FOUR games after November 18 until after 2020. THINK. WHO CARES.

The thousands of Gopher fans who watch part or all of the games from the concourses care plenty. And so do the many fans who run to the rest rooms to warm up during the games. The heaters are needed for several games every year. Oh, and go screw yourself.

In the early days, even the Vikings had crappy chalk for field lines during the Twins season. Look up Tony Dorsett's 99 yard run, the entire field was chalk. (Edit: that run was on January 3rd. Apparently paint was not invented in 1982.) Once the Twins were done, the field was painted. I am fairly certain that even back in the Holtz days, the Gophers never played with a Vikings logo on the field. I could be wrong.

Regarding the Dome's field having chalk markings for Tony Dorsett's 99 yard run, here's the backstory. The roof collapsed due to heavy snow about a week before the game. Somehow they got the roof fixed in time, but the field had significant snow cover followed by plenty of water when it melted. The paint got washed out and there wasn't enough time to redo it, so chalk was utilized for a lack of other options. If you watch the highlights, you'll see significant wet spots on the field due to the melted snow. Edited to add that the paint back then was very primitive compared to present materials and techniques.

As for the U of M having its logos on the field, I feel pretty safe in saying that the matter was of relatively little concern to the school in comparison to the money and capital improvements. This is more of an issue to individual fans than to Teague or Kaler who I believe consider it a non factor or a point worth giving in exchange for other more important gains.

For me, all of the Vikings talk is a non factor. I'm a casual fan of the NFL, at best. If TCF Bank Stadium gets a few extra benefits, that's all good. I'll just make sure I bring a can of Febreeze.

OK, I give. Those of you who are really worked up about free stadium upgrades that the U didn't need and will benefit from forever and ever, can get worked up. I apologize to those who believe that they need to have an opinion about free stadium upgrades that the U didn't need and will benefit from forever and ever, can have an opinion. You care. I don't.

It will still be cold in your seat. It will still be warm in he bathrooms. If you want to stand under a radiant heater and watch the game on a TV in the concourse or bathroom, be my guest. I don't care. I will still watch from my seat on November 15, 2014, November 21, 2015, November 19, 2016, November 25, 2017, November 17, 2018, and November 30, 2019. It may be cold, it may be not. Those are the six games out of the next 40-plus that bitter freezing cold--you know, like in the mid- to upper 20's--may affect me. I will dress warmly. I will not worry about whether or not the field is heated.

I'm glad that people care. It's just not for me.

Sorry if you are embarrassed. “I’m not who I think I am. Nor am I who you think I am. But I am who I think you think I am.”

It's not complicated. Instead of being a condescending jerk, don't open, and don't post in threads that don't interest you.

You seem to care deeply about those that do care.

I wanted to agree with your post above but it appears by doing so per the post below that would make me "condescending jerk". Therefore, all I am going to do is thank you for being a"condescending jerk".

Haha, don't worry my simple friend, no one could ever view you as condescending.

But it's not your money (well...it might be some of your tax money...)or the University's money. It's 'free' and provided by the Vikings. I don't understand why people are upset. It's kind of funny that people are so upset that we're not getting good enough free stuff. It's stuff we wouldn't have had if the Vikings weren't coming here. Be happy. Life is better that way.

The Big 10 has 4 Schools with grass fields. Michigan State, Purdue, Northwestern, and Penn State and they seem to be able to take care of it. Of course Notre Dame has grass. I am not arguing for or against. But simply stated the way to do right would be to follow the Pack, and how they attempt to make the frozen tundra playable.

I am not upset about anything. I just believe that the No. 1 upgrade for Gopher fans would be radiant heaters in the concourses. Since the Twins think they are a good idea for their early and late season games they have installed 400 of them at Target Field. Gopher football fans deserve the same kind of consideration. We can only hope the Vikings are willing to pay for them for their fans for two years at the Gophers Stadium.

Those schools don't have a 300 person marching band practicing on their field for 2.5 hours a day everyday. The turf is as much about the amount of abuse it gets as it is about the weather.

And now you know the rest of the story.

In addition to the Marching Band, there are kinesiology classes in the morning and intramurals in the evening.

It's too bad that the Vikings didn't decide that WiFi or upgraded cellular service was part of the total fan experience.

It would have been great to have them pay for those upgrades, too.

This. TCF Bank is a black hole for Sprint.

I have Verizon and TCF is really the only place in the Twin Cities that I've experienced bad coverage. I have zero data connection at my seat.

Yup. I get little to no coverage in TCF. And forget about getting an internet connection. I don't think I've ever gotten that to work. It would be nice to hop on GH at halftime.

I feel sorry for all those that are forced to just watch the game.:cool02:

We have T-Mobile. While we've had problems in Central Minnesota and down by Winona, we've always gotten coverage at our seats and usually in the concourse at TCF. When we haven't we've went to the stairs and gotten coverage there.
