Vikings TCF Upgrades

I'm assuming that is different than the coils everyone is talkng about? If I recall, hydronic heating systems have miles of pipes under the fild and hot liquid is run through it from a boiler to keep the field warm... let me know if I"m mistaken

Same thing from my perspective - coils, tubes, etc... I was assuming if it was going to be under the field it would by hydronic.

I have hydronic/radiant/choose your phrase heating in my basement and it is awesome!

If you are talking about electric heating coils under the turf, I don't think anyone was thinking that.

I wouldn't say its impulsive to have the field numbers match the numbers used on the jerseys - the U and Nike made a big deal about the font when the new uniforms were released and it's used all over the place already: Scoreboard, website, stadium cups, merchandise

Bottom line, When the Vikings leave, TCF will be in better than it is now.

Yes.

It makes sense to build the brand instead of having generic number/letters. It's a subtle touch. It's really not impulsive because they've been pimping this for a couple of seasons now.

I don't feel like going to Lambeau for a tour but common sense would say the vast majority of the expense is for December and January. Like others have said we only have one game a year to keep it warm for. and that's in Novermber. If you can't afford to maintain and operate it, don't turn it on.

Lambeau has grass. I bet this system can be turned on the night before if no snow is involved.

I love our new fonts, numbers, and branding. It's uniquely ours and we should put it on the field in two years.

Can't say for sure but that would surprise me. Hydronic systems are extremely slow to respond to changes. In the home at least you kind of set them and forget them because the fluid temperature is not particularly high.

Wow one photo so it's all over the place.

Notice the Block M on the helmet. Hasn't changed.

You honestly haven't seen this branding almost everywhere involving the football team? I think your just trying to be an a$$.

Yep, I see the block M. The block M is our logo, what's your point? It took me all of 2 clicks to find the font/branding being used online - which your claim was that is wasn't happening. Just proving you're wrong. Not going to point out everyplace they're using the branding.

Yep. Shocker

That would be highly doubtful and would require high power and high temp.

Lambeau is partially artificial also.

Pharmacy and goldust saying it is being used all over is not true. It is used in various places but not all over. I don't think it should be used everywhere and it appears it will not be.

I am not trying to be an ass and I resent being called that. Is that what you call everyone that disagrees with you?

Of course not. I'm not the one who made the smart-a$$ comments about not changing the block M, therefore the new branding isn't prevalent. It's on websites, clothing, uniforms, helmets, lockers, lockeroom, signage, cups, memorabilia, official documents, recruiting letters, car stickers, caps, stocking hats, billboards, scoreboards, posters, knick-knacks, game tickets, pamphlets, banners, and a thousand other things.

Which by the way all still contain the iconic block M.

Then don't call me one.

Just look around a little harder. It's all about branding.
The font is all over the place. My point is the U and Nike created this font for the gophers, so they should continue to incorporate the "brand" wherever they can. Field numbers are a very visible place for this brand element.

From the original new uniform release:

The design was influenced by Minnesota’s rich history and tradition. Perhaps the most recognizable feature of the new uniforms will be the font used for jersey numbers and other text. Nike used a number four found on a 1940 jersey worn by the National Champion Gophers and built an entire letter and number font, which is exclusive to Gopher Football.

You would think the geniuses at the NFL could schedule late season games for the Vikes on the road in Detroit, and an out of conference game against Tampa. They could avoid all the problems of playing in December outdoors.

I heard/read somewhere where teams are guaranteed 2 December home games, I believe. I have no idea where I heard that though. Probably KFAN, so don't hold me to it!

Except maybe that a team wants to be home at the end of the season if a playoff appearance is on the line? I know we are talking the Vikings but........

When one says branding(in regards to font) I think first and foremost of the block M. I don't see the font used in other areas besides football....maybe I am missing some there.

I don't think everyone is 'sold' on the font and more importantly I don't ever see the general populous seeing the font and think 'that's Minnesota'. To me it is a uniform design that will be changed in 5 or 6 years.

If people want to use it in certain areas, fine I guess. Let's just drop the notion of changing all font at the U to this new font......and then changing it again.........and then changing it again. The font is not that great anyway.

That's because it's football only. Did you read what you quoted....Nike used a number four found on a 1940 jersey worn by the National Champion Gophers and built an entire letter and number font, which is exclusive to Gopher Football. Aren't you big on tradition? I'm surprised you don't like the fact they're paying homage to the 'glory days'.

If you're talking about using the font for all Minnesota sports, that's a whole different conversation. Michigan State does a nice job with this. Look at their football, basketball, and hockey jerseys - from what I've noticed, same fonts throughout.

If Minnesota wanted to use the block M and block letters, I'd be all for that as well. I actually loved the initial mock ups of TCF that had MINNESOTA spelled with block letters, it looked pretty sweet.

Obviously not everyone is 'sold', because you're throwing a sh!t fit about it. Can you explain why we will be changing uniforms in 5 or 6 years? This is the first I'm hearing of it. Changes often occur with coaching changes (hence our recent changes to the Brew unis then to the Kill unis) but don't have to. With some subtle changes, Mase had the same uniforms for 10 years. Wisconsin has gone from BA to BB to whoever the coach is without changing much. You're the one saying things will change. If Norwood is planning on really pushing the Minnesota brand, then there will be consistency.

Again, no one mentioned using it University-wide and you're the one saying this will keep changing. The point of building a brand, is to be consistent.

Sorry to go all dpod on you! LOL

Lambeau is partially artificial also.

Anything above 32 degrees F is not frozen. A 33 degree surface would not be frozen. That's just basic science. Make it 40 just to be safe.

The "artificial fibers" at Lambeau are there just to keep the dirt intact. It's 100% grass on top. And still dies after Thanksgiving. Re-watch the play-off game.

Still doesn't mean you can turn it on the night before, but believe what you want.

Sounds like our wires were crossed on how widespread the font would be used.....football only does make more sense. I still don't think the font is all that great. Not everything old makes for good tradition. Definitely not in favor of using for the font at midfield and in the endzones. That's what I thought the crux of the argument was. When one says the new font needs to be used everywhere for our branding, I think of it being the main look and predominate presentation....

As far as how long it will last, only time will tell. Uniforms change quite often, sometimes very minor.

If it's zero degrees outside and the ground is frozen, it takes a hell of a lot more power to thaw it out in 12 or 18 hours than it does to just 'keep it thawed out' Ask any of your heating/AC buddies. That is truly basic science.

Not sure how powerful these heated field units are but just turning on the night before in Dec or Jan would require way, way, more powerful of a unit.

Why? Its not like the Gophers need it...

Sure. Whatever you think. There's a new thing called a thermostat. Gezzus. Has nothing to do with "way more power". If you set it for above freezing, the unit keeps the surface above freezing. Ask a guy you know.

Let's be negative about the field heating system now that we will have one. That maintains the negativity that we had before we had one. Geezus.

Whoa, this is going to take a little explaining. If you are talking about being able to thaw out a frozen field by turning on the system the night before, how does a thermostat factor in?

Forget it. Mr Science clearly doesn't understand fundamental heat transfer. You know, the theory that if you have a thermostat that you can dump infinite heat into something just like that.
