This reminds me of a lot of the noise on this board a couple years ago when Cobbs transferred.

Truth is, we don't have a guard who's as quick to the basket and with the ability to finish once he gets there as Chip. And remember that Eric Harris couldn't make a jump shot as a sophomore.

Eric Harris wasnt a shooting guard. Big difference.
 


This is how it always happens! Its called Spring house Creaning for a reason. Seems innocuous until you look at the timing.

Can't use a Football or academic Scholly!

Since when does 3 games equal many? Both Nebraska games and Illinois at home were his best games. And what was your favorite moment when chip gave up that long full court pass for a dunk against Illinois just when we had tied it up? Unless we have about 3 injuries at guard next year, this is addition by subtraction. A shooting guard that shoots < 50% from the line...yuck.
 


The same people on this board that think it's no big deal to lose Chip will be upset with Tubby a few years from now when Chip is averaging 10-15 points a game somewhere else. He's a guy that's athletic and has some basketball skills who has been in the program for 2 years. He's going to play his best basketball as a junior and senior. Instead, people clamor to use his scholarship on some unknown high school player, who will likely arrive on campus and display some of the similar warts that Chip had in his game his first 2 years. A guy like Chip that was our best player for even 3 games as a sophomore isn't someone I want to leave.

I have no idea what you've been watching. Andre and Coleman are significantly better at getting to the basket.

They also don't:
1)Turn it over by dribbling into the middle of a pack for no reason.
2)shoot several awful shots a game. (Granted Chip did make some of them),
3)Play horrendous defense

Regardless, I hope he goes to another program (if true) and does well, but I have no idea what D1 program he would play for... Cobbs at least was the 38th ranked point guard according to ESPN and also had offers from Iowa, San Diego St., Cal, Washington St., and USC. So, that comparison doesn't really apply in my opinion.

+1 Sorry to see Chip go.

IMO the Gophers gain nothing from Chip transferring. Likely the NCAA would have given the Gophers a scholarship waiver for Trevor. The Gophers did not oversign - the need for an extra scholly was due to an unforseen injury and NCAA granting another year for Trevor. No way the Gophers could have predicted that.

Now the waiver will be lost and Chip's scholly will be used for Trevor.

Just a difference in style - Chip liked to freelance and jack up quick shots. Tubby was not totally down on Chip as he played him a fair amount. Just needed more time and couching.

Many, several, a few, whatever, you're nitpicking. That's almost 10% of our regular season games & he was an underclassman. That's not counting several games where he scored double digits off the bench & was the 2nd best player on our team. Bottom line he's not without talent, just undisciplined & a causality of our talent upgrade. I want the talent upgrade of Mbakwe coming back I hate to lose a young player who has talent.

Favorite moment? Probably the sick no-look & between the legs passes (forget the opponent?) that made Sportscenter's Top-10.

If Chip were a better ball handler, I would be more concerned with his departure. The most glaring weakness on next year's team based on what we have coming back is ball handling and if Chip had that, it would hurt a lot. He brought as much energy to the floor as anyone the last two years, but his lack of discipline was maddening. He will do well in a run and gun offense at a mid major, but he was destined to continue to struggle in high major that required discipline and defense. He was a great get as an August recruit, but his future success will be at a lower level of basketball. Here is hoping that he was not run off, but is making a decision based on the handwriting on the wall.

The only way the NCAA gives the Gophers 14 scholarships for the year is to retain the players currently on the roster or already signed an LOI. There is no chance the NCAA gives an extra scholarship that allows a team to add a new player to the team. That would be a huge competitive advantage. If Chip leaves, the gophers are at 13 scholarships and there is no need for the 14th.

He was aggressive and in an open court, ya, he could finish. In traffic he wasn't a good finisher, especially when forced to the right. Not a particularly good shot either although that was partly from forcing a lot of shots. 50% from the stripe and almost as many turnovers as assists. He'll score in the right situation, and people will bitch at his being gone, but this is a loss we can afford.

Nobody wants Chip gone for "some unknown high school player"
 


1 year Mbakwe > 2 years Chip. Especially since we are so deep at the 2.

Yep, and if we had gotten the waiver for Mbakwe to get an extra scholarship it's very likely we don't go with the 3 guard offense again. Joe, Welch, Austin, and Chip splitting time at the 2 would not leave much for Chip.
 


I liked Chip. I'm sad it didn't work out for him. I'm not going to hold any ill-will for him, and I wish him the best wherever he goes, as long as he doesn't talk crap on the way out the door. He was a pretty good soldier, and he helped us in some games. I'm not going to be actively rooting against him like I was with Devoe.

Agreed. Wish nothing but the absolute best for Chip.
 

Many of the same typical repsones when a player has transferred. He wasn't going to play anyway, best for both parties, a lost we can afford and bunch of other about how "talented" the squad is. Losing a player off the bench coming into his Junior year that could at times provided some scoring is not something that a team even with Mbakwe returning that will be picked to finish around .500 in conference could afford.

6th player to transfer in 3 years is not good either.

Well...Devoe quit on the team and brought a lot of that upon himself.

I hope Chip finds a spot where he flourishes academically and athletically.

Chip would help the Gophers no doubt about it but he was never going to be a starter and consequently not substantial playing time. I have no problem with this transfer, I think it benefits him, he will very likely be a starter or get significant minutes if he transfers to a mid major.

I hope they bank this scholership and use it for 2014 rather than 2013.

You can't lump them all together because of Carter and Royce being for reasons outside Tubby's control. Also, Devoe's departure is diff because of his suspension issues and the fact he up and quit on the team. Lastly, Chip's transfer was prob necessary in order to get Trevor back. Lumping them together pretends there is a single consistent factor involved.
 


Fuller say where? Or official as in Chip has been released from his scholly?
