Tweet from Chris Monter - UPDATED (4/9): U Confirms Chip is Transferring

Sorry, late to the party on this. Just getting time to catch up on GH today - but I also heard (and tweeted) earlier from some close sources to the team that it is Chip. Also hearing that Lockett is probably headed to ISU.

Just rumors though, so don't kill the messenger if I end up being incorrect.

Sounds about right. Wish I knew what Tubby's thoughts on Lockett are. Wonder they even talked?

From what I heard (once again, hearsay), as of Monday, they hadn't. But unless I hear something from Tubby or Trent (which neither call me up) that's all I can go off of is good sources.

Thanks for sharing. I won't be sad if Chip heads out. As for Lockett, ISU is going to become my second least favorite team after WI if he chooses them over us (assuming Tubby reaches out to him).

"...usually through attrition, usually through something, somebody decides that this is it..." sounds a little bit different than last week's "we expect that everyone in our program this year to be back next year", but it's Tubby talking so who knows. Probably just words being said.

Things will work out fine.

What did you expect Tubby to say when the team was still playing ?

If my math is good.. I'm guessing we don't have a spot for Trent unless another player leave IN ADDITION to Chip. Trevor needs one..and unless the NCAA tells us next week that they will grant an extra scholly, another player needs to leave before Trent even has a spot. I personally do not agree with reaching out to a player if there is no spot for him..doing so implies you are in fact running a player out of the program, versus letting it happen naturally. Just my opinion. Doesn't mean its not happening elsewhere.. just my thoughts. I also think Trent would be a great addition but in no way would he be the difference maker for us..

I can't imagine the NCAA giving Mbakwe a 6th year while giving the team an extra scholarship for one season for him to use. I can see it if no other options become available but I dont see them saying sure we will give him an extra year and if another player would open up it will have to be for Mbakwe I cant see the NCAA saying sure use that on a different player who is transferring in from another school no matter the situation. It seems like they would be giving the Gophers to big of an advantage.

I seem to remember a couple of years ago something about Hoffarber possibly receiving an academic scholarship to free up a spot. Is that correct? If so is that an option? OR is there any player on the team who's family is wealthy enough to logically look at the situation and be a team player for a season? All long shots, I know, but I was just wondering about these options as well...

Academic Scholarship should be possible for Lockett, but IDK how that would work for grad school.
Wealthy parents? See Hollins, Lionel. Would they be willing, I can't answer that.

The more I think about it, I question if Tubby wants Lockett. With the Beast back Rodney moves to the 3. Austin, Joe, and Welch can play other positions but will mostly play at the 2. Lockett can play other positions but mostly with play at the 2. Also, Lockett can surely get more minutes elsewhere.

This may be a little off-the-wall, but:

Chip was an all-state FB player in HS. Maybe the Gophs could move his scholarship to a FB scholarship, and he could (try to) play both sports? I realize this may be far-fetched, but then you avoid the "running a guy off" claim.

And, with all due respect to Chip, I wonder if he might be a better FB player? He's obviously a good athlete, but not a polished basketball player, and I don't know if he will ever be anything other than a 6th-man type at the D1 level.

Do teams not need 6th man types on their teams? There is only 5 starting positions out there, the rest of the guys are coming off the bench. Unless you're a Kentucky, Kansas, etc., you're not gonna load up on "starters" that come off the bench. I don't think he's doing too bad for himself if he never becomes more than a 6th man type at this level.

I believe it would be fair to say he his a far more polished basketball player than football d-back.

Sorry to see Chip go. I think he's fine as a reserve, but I'm sure he can start at a mid-major school. I don't blame him. The problem with him is that when his offense is gone, he's not really worth anything on the court, which is why he didn't start. If he could defend well and did a lot of hustle plays like charges, etc., he would've gotten way more PT.

Well I guess Tubby does not need an exception from the NCAA on a special roster spot for Mbakwe now.

I really dislike this time of year for this kind of crap. We have to get away from the idea that signing to play basketball here isn't a long term commitment. Everyone said it was no big deal when Cobb left...looked how that turned out. Tubby's system aint easy to play in and FR rarely do well...especially young guards.

+1. Chip has a scorer's mentality and solid upside. I could see him stepping up and being a dangerous threat off the bench. I definitely don't want to lose someone like him after 2 years.

Important to remember that Chip was only a sophomore. Lots of room for growth these next couple years. I for one will miss him and his potential a lot.

A player like Chip that shoots a lot will be more effective if he finds a place where he can start. Sitting for major minutes to start a game often doesn't work well for players that like to take a lot of shots.

Just depends on the guy.. Dion Waiters of Syracuse & 2 yrs ago Thomas for tOSU both did pretty well coming off the bench firing. I think shot selection & shooting ability are Chip's issues more so than being a bench player.

His shot and shooting percentage were major problems. He was an exciting player to watch however. But six foot shooting guards who aren't good shooters are a dime a dozen.

And this is really the point...

We've come a long way in a short time when we can let an athletic underclassman, who's been our best player in many games this year go & no one really cares. That speak to our talent level. It's the way college basketball works, we're stacked at SG, we need a schollie, w/ Trevor back we could be special, etc. Just saying, it's not as if Chip is without talent. He's the kind of kid who's still raw, needs lot of coaching, but who could have developed into a solid upperclassman imo. Good luck to him & let's do some damage next year with Trevor back.

Define "many" I remember him being our best player in a handful of games.
