Tweet from Chris Monter - UPDATED (4/9): U Confirms Chip is Transferring

Fuller say where? Or official as in Chip has been released from his scholly?

That's all he said. No destination.

Rayno just tweeted that the U plans on announcing the transfer today.

He said likely a smaller D1 school in Louisiana.

Here's the press release from the U:

Chip Armelin Granted Release from Gopher Hoops Program

University of Minnesota men’s basketball head coach Tubby Smith and the Golden Gopher basketball program today announced that guard Chip Armelin has asked for, and will be granted release from his scholarship. Armelin will remain on campus scholastically through the end of the semester.

“Chip has been a valuable part of our program for the past two seasons,” said Smith. “He has done everything we have asked of him and we are grateful for his contributions to this program on and off of the court. We are sad that he has elected to leave but certainly want to wish him the very best.”

Armelin played in all 38 games this season for the Golden Gophers and contributed career-highs in multiple categories, including points (5.2 ppg), rebounds (2.1 rpg) and minutes played (13.7 mpg). He will leave the program with averages of 4.8 points and 1.8 rebounds in 69 career games.

Good luck to Chip wherever he lands. I think he exceeded expectations given his recruitment story.

6th player to transfer in 3 years is not good either.

I tweeted this 2 weeks ago:

"Hey, I have an idea: Let's all sit around for two weeks and talk about how the best thing for next year is if someone transfers and makes room for Trevor. Then, when someone transfers to make room for Trevor, let's talk about how bad it is."

Some people just like to find the negative in everything. If we win the national championship they'll say we should have done it sooner and should have won by a larger margin of victory. Good luck to Chip wherever he goes. I wish him nothing but the best, but swapping in Trevor for a player who was likely to struggle to find minutes at a crowded position is a stupid thing to complain about.

And all it's going to take is one injury to Austin Hollins or Joe Coleman, and everyone will be complaining about a lack of depth and how nice it would be to have Chip back as he's averaging 15 points a game down south. Bank on it...

With Trevor back I expect the team to go away from the 3 guard offense back to 2 guards. That leaves Welch, Austin, Joe, and Wally fighting for playing time at 2 (Welch will likely back up at PG as well). If one player goes down, I don't think people will be clamoring for Chip to come back.

It would take more than one injury for that to happen. We can go back to Rodney at the 3 if necessary (Tubby might do this regardless) and we have Wally coming in too. Depth at that position should not be an issue. It would take an extreme circumstance for fans to say they wish they had Chip instead of Mbakwe.

This is exactly the type of comment I'm talking about. In your mind Wally Ellenson is going to be Wally Szerbiak from Day 1 and is guaranteed to be better than Chip. People are always ready to annoint the unknown, new player as a savior or sure-fire starter and ignore a player who has been in the program multiple years and has the chance to improve. You'll probably be ready to pull Wally's scholarship after he's not that impressive in his first few games. Chip Armelin as a junior, who has played in every game in his career and been through the battles, makes the Gophers a better team next year than Wally Ellenson, who was 4th team all-state in Wisky. If Chip was here it would also allow Wally to redshirt.

Please, tell me where I said that Wally is better than Chip. I'll wait. I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say.

False. How much did chip contribute to the nice NIT run? That's correct, absolutely nothing. With Rodney going back to the 3, there are zero minutes for chip on this team. Wally has a much higher upside than chips, see their offer lists please.

Did you really just criticize him for assuming the unknown (even though he didn't even do what you said), and then immediately assume the unknown yourself by claiming Chip would be better than Wally?

P.S. No one said Wally will be better than Chip from day one. The point is that he provides depth at that position, thus making Chips deaparture less of a blow.

Your statement insinuates that these 4 will be the top guards battling for playing time? Stating that Wally will be one of the guys "fighting for playing time at 2" with no mention of Chip gives the impression that you've placed him above Chip.

Oh, so Wally will be better because he has the better offer list. Should have known...

I didn't mention Chip because Chip isn't on the team anymore. I was using the example of Welch, Austin, Joe, and Wally fighting for time to say that even without Chip there is definitely depth at the off-guard spot. Why would I mention Chip fighting for playing time on a team he is no longer on?

Juniors who have played for 2 years in every game, non-conference and 36 B1G games, will usually be better than freshmen who have never played college basketball. This goes out the window with the McDonald's All-Americans at Kentucky, NC, Duke, etc, but it's generally a pretty accurate statement. Unless you haven't noticed, we haven't recruited ANY of those types of players in Tubby's 5 years here. I'll predict that Wally averages fewer points next year than Chip did this year. Deal?

If that was your intent, my aplogies. I read it to mean that there's no room for Chip since those will be the 4 competing for playing time.

Couple Questions.

1. Is the 2012-2013 team better with Mbakwe or Armelin?
1b. If the answer is Mbakwe, what other scholarship would you rather have open up for Mbakwe?
2. How much playing time did you expect Armelin to get next year?

You're assuming the unknown again. It doesn't matter what's typical of most players. You're still assuming the unknown. Andre wasn't All-American, and I'd say he made a pretty significant contribution as a freshman even if it was mostly towards the end of the year (not saying Wally will have same impact, just saying you don't need to be the number one player to have a good freshman season). The only reason I'm calling you out on that is because you called out someone else for doing the exact same thing. You can't tell someone not to do something, then literally do the exact same thing yourself. Makes you sound like a hypocrite. Again, I never said Wally will be better as a freshman than Chip would have been next season. I think he will struggle to find playing time, just like Chip would have. In fact, I would prefer Wally to redshirt unless there is an injury or if he's ready to give more significant minutes than I'm anticipating. The significance of Wally being brought up is to point out that we will have an emergency option if someone gets hurt at that position and people won't be wishing Chip was here instead of Mbakwe if one player gets hurt.

The team is better any day with Mbakwe and will survive just fine without Chip. What I get tired of is "fans" easily dismissing a player that made a commitment to the U of M and was invested here because he didn't average 15 points or 10 rebounds as a sophomore. And the notion that high school player X is pretty much guaranteed to be better than a guy who has been in the program for 2 years and shown some flashes.

Fair enough. I like Chip and hope he does well wherever he goes. I think most peoples' excitement is due to Mbakwe having a scholarship rather than Chip being gone. If we could have Mbakwe back without Chip having to leave, I think most people would be even more excited.

I think people just understand the situation, there are 13 scholarships, not everyone is going to be happy with playing time. Armelin was buried on the depth chart as evidenced by the late season run. He chose to leave because he wasn't getting the minutes he wanted. Are you upset he didn't get more minutes this year?

Outside of Mbakwe or maybe Lockett, I have a hard time seeing Chip or his replacement seeing significant playing time next year. If Chip wants to play more, sitting out a year and transferring is the best situation for him.

Many on this thread are declaring Wally to be better than Chip. Sorry if you don't see that. I'm simply stating that it's not a given, and that my prediction is we'd be better off with Chip Armelin on the team next year.

The only reason people mentioned Wally is because you said we would have no depth if Austin or Coleman went down.

You're entitled to your opinion. That's perfectly fine. It's my opinion however, that Mbakwe for 1 year and Wally for 4 years is much better for the team than Chip for 2 years and Wally for 4 years. No disrespect to Chip, just my opinion. I think most people probably agree.

Redshirting is for football. Give me kids who can play right away. I would hope Wally is better than Chip. If not then recruit better players. About the only program I can think of right off hand then does much redshirting is Wisconsin. They do all right but not the model I would chose to emulate. Chip can't handle the ball ,play defense or shoot a decent percentage. He can improve in all areas but you don't see many fifty percent free throw shooters become good shooters. He has kind of a cool funky type of game. The question is how much better can he get? Tubby must not think he will be much more than what he is.

Generally I don't like redshirting players either. Only reason I suggest the idea for Wally is because of the amount of players already at his position. If Tubby thinks he's ready to play and contribute from day one, then let him play.
