Tweet from Chris Monter - UPDATED (4/9): U Confirms Chip is Transferring

The Chipster played the NIT run like he wanted out. Hopefully he gets hooked up at a school that doesn't have a structured offense. Chip is the kind of player that if he is one against 4 he'll drive the lane or take the pullup three.

Wally Ellenson..........

is as good as Chip...RIGHT NOW. He has played a ton of basketball and has much greater court awareness. He's not a sharpshooter yet, but he can create his own shot (that was Chip's strength IMHO) He'll be a better defender from Day 1.

And....he'll probably be content with 10-15 MPG in year one.

No worries.

No prejudice either....they're both lefties

The team is better any day with Mbakwe and will survive just fine without Chip. What I get tired of is "fans" easily dismissing a player that made a commitment to the U of M and was invested here because he didn't average 15 points or 10 rebounds as a sophomore. And the notion that high school player X is pretty much guaranteed to be better than a guy who has been in the program for 2 years and shown some flashes.

Give me a break. Yeah, people are happy Chip is gone because he didn't have an All-Big Ten caliber season. Seriously? He's so far from those numbers that it's ridiculous to even mention them as any sort of standard. (And commitment and investment to the U of M, huh? He transferred! And, if he didn't play much or had a bad game on a particular night, he visibly couldn't have cared less. I hate to get all Dakich here, but you could tell from Chip's body language that he didn't care about much besides his own playing time and personal success. He checked out if he wasn't performing.)

I like Chip. Honestly, Chip has been one of my favorite players the last two years. He's a microwave on offense, good for a few good games a year. And on those nights, he's great. But he has had many more bad games and tepid performances. He's careless with the ball, he has way too high a usage rate, and he has no interest in running on offense or playing any sort of defense. Ever see Chip on defense? He's terrible.

I honestly think, on most nights, Chip was a net negative. And I like Chip. I really do. I think Chip could do well in a different system and level of play, where his ball-hoggish tendencies and lazy defensive effort won't get punished as much. He'll probably score a lot of points wherever he goes. And I'm happy for him, because I really think that's all he wants to do. But the Gophers won't miss him much.

Well there pops up the spot we needed for Mbakwe's return. Now we make a run at the Big Ten title.

I have a hard time with blanket statements about recruits before they play. Wally has looked good against the Big Rivers Conference in WI. We'll see.

+1. This is the entire point of my rant. I'm not a Chip apologist, I don't think he necessarily deserved more minutes, and he definitely needs to work on his game and improve. My issue is with the posters who easily dismiss someone leaving because a high school kid like Wally is "definitely better right now."

I saw bad body language from almost everyone on the team with the exception of Andre Hollins for large portions of the year. Ralph, Rodney, Austin Hollins, Coleman, and Ingram all had some moments.

Wally wasn't recruited because of the talent he played in the Big Rivers...if that were the case Evan Anderson would be wearing a Blugold jersey (he still may, biggest bust since JP Gavinski). Wally proved himself against kids that will be playing for better talent than the Gophers are bringing in. Will Chip be missed? Probably, experience is the thing the Gophs will miss. However, Wally CAN play at this level and can contribute next year for 10 minutes a game if called upon. Personally, I would like to see him redshirt a year, but with Chip leaving, it may not be an option.

Don't forget Welch.

...or the coaching staff, now that we think about it. It is, after all, a team sport.

You have an issue with only one poster then. YOU were the first person to even mention anything about Wally being better than Chip.

In a perfect world, the Gophers will redshirt both Ellenson and Buggs next season, especially if we get a late spring/early summer gift (Lockett). Not seeing a lot of time for either one if (cross our fingers) Trevor, Mo and everyone is back & healthy. And I say that knowing Tubby likes to rotate everyone and the kitchen sink into games.

If we need either of our freshmen to contribute significantly next year, something's gone seriously awry.

See post #13 by scher215:

"Mav has always seemed to have been happy here, even in the bench, actually plays PG, and seems to like Tubby.

Chip seems irritated with playing time, is now behind Welch, Joe, Austin, will likely be behind Wally if he doesn't redshirt, and barely saw time even in a 3 guard line up."

People on this thread were stating this before I made a single post.

The key for bench players is can they improve their game while getting limited minutes. It could be argued that Chip really didn't show that after two seasons. You can't blame him for going somewhere where he will get more minutes based on his potential, and you can't blame the coaching staff for wanting to bring in someone else who has a chance to contribute more.

+201

I wish Chip success.

Good Luck Chip!

I really liked Chip as a player, and I know I am not alone. He could do some things offensively that no one else on the team could. I was disappointed to see Tubby cut his minutes so severely after the regular season and I completely understand his desire to transfer. He has some serious offensive game that will shine in an up-tempo system. I expect he'll not be too far behind Cobbs and Devoe in his future success.

That said, Tubby is a defensive coach, and Chip just never seemed to buy in. I'm not sure he ever took a charge for the team, and JC just ate his minutes by the end of the season. Anyhow, thanks for the highlights Chip, and Good Luck!

I also wish Chip the best. He did a lot of positive things for the Gophers and I think he will have a successful career wherever he ends up. If he ends up on a team that runs a fast paced offense, he will probably do very well.
