The Truth about tubby take 2

A friend of mine is very connected to the summer leagues and he does not like Tubby and says we have zero chance to get Tyus.

GP, I say right on. Let's not shoot the messenger

Not taking ups sides with Tubby here, but your OP sounds like an anonymous internet biatch.

Dr Don, the most annoying mutha fugga on this board; who does nothing but drool over GL and stand up for a D2 team (NDSU) is calling an insider an " Internet biatch". God bless the Internet......

I've kind of gotten the impression that Tubby does not have a good relationship with Howard Pulley at all.

I remember GopherPlaya posting before, and answering a lot of questions I have. I do believe he's an insider, as he confirmed a lot of things I had heard from many sources too.

Thanks for your insights, GopherPlaya. I don't think it's what many of us want to hear - but if it's truthful, you can't argue with that. What do you think would be the appropriate right steps? What great coach is available and willing to come to MN...any insight? Aside from Flip, who is obviously available.

Gophers make a nice run in the NCAA Tourney and Tubby is the coach next year. Bandwagon fills up...Tubby bashing ends. Except for the Trolls...Gopherhole is happy.

Parski, I hope you're right about all of that, but I think we're on the verge of a deep run only providing a reprieve from the angst towards the staff. A S16 or better run would absolutely qualify as a fantastic run for us and one of the better runs in program history, but I am not sure if it would dramatically change people's opinions of the program going forward. I'd love to have the scenario play out and have my theory be wrong, but there is a crisis in confidence with the fans, media, local pundits, etc. and this staff. Winning big solves a lot of problems, so hopefully we see it healing some wounds.

Go Gophers!!

It won't happen and it wouldn't change people's opinion.

I don't think it's bad to have a healthy fantasy life, but...

What Bleed posted was what I was just thinking myself. This season has had a profound impact on the community's relationship with this coach. "Crisis of confidence" are the perfect words to describe it. The trust and confidence are gone. Tubby is still a well liked person, but even if they were to run off a couple wins in the Dance, it wouldn't change the damaged nature of people's opinions of Smith and his staff. People know I'm a season ticket holder, and I get an earful from plenty of folks. And I would say a lot of people see the situation more clearly than us starry-eyed fans who are arguably too close to the situation.

Just still doesn't register with me how it worked to some extent at UK (title, undefeated SEC, etc. ), Tulsa, Georgia. was his talent just better there or have things changed in his coaching or mental make up of players?

Well an I am sure good old Friend of Tubby would take me to task, but Tubby has had most of his success coaching up players recruited by his predecessor. His record with teams made up of his own players is substandard in comparison.

I personnel think Tubby is a horrible recruiter and the major part of that problem his inability to relate today's kids. I think that is why we have so many transfers.

The only star players he has recruited at MN are local kids who really wanted to play at home or local kids who wanted to transfer to be close to home.

It's time for a change.

Definitely not your opinion. You're just a stubborn old man full of hate.

I'm not saying you're stupid, I'm just saying you've got bad luck when it comes to thinking.

It's my opinion that it's my opinion.

BTW I don't hate anyone. It's you that keeps using the hate words. I even look forward to reading your posts.

GL, I was not saying that I am a Tubby backer, as I, among others, have lost a lot of confidence in him. My only reference was to the anonymity of the OP which appeared to me to be a series of one sided complaints. If GopherPlaya has some "inside" insights, I would appreciate more in-depth input from him.

Don, take your head out of the sand. How much more "in depth" do you need?

I am a casual fan, but have suspected something is not quite right in gopherland since Mr. Smith joined... gopherplaya's insight may just explain it...
damn... i became a huge fan during Clem's years but this stretch has really taken its toll... i am not even watching the games now... that is something that has never happened before, not even during Monson's years when oftentimes we were the clear underdog

I like you're thinking but i believe she asked, "aside from Flip." I think that we all know Flip would jump on the chance to coach the Gophers. There are mixed feelings on this board about Flip. IMO he would be a great get, if he could get a solid assistant that knows how to recruit.

I've read on this board that people think he can't recruit (I personally don't think it would be an issue). They say he never won. fact is he had a winning record with the WOLVES, good run with the Pistons, and then unfortunately took the Wizards job. From a X's and O's stand point, our offense would no longer be an issue that's for sure but he would need a defensive guru on the staff. Although, we do need to remember that he did coach Professionals who don't like to play D day in and day out. As far as recruiting, Flip is a really likeable guy! Players coach who the recruits will love and doesn't tend to call out players or throw his team under the bus.

IMO I would reach out to Shaka Smart 1st and if he didn't want the job I would offer Flip right after that.

Good post, I think you are right on, I think Flip would bring a passion to coaching the Gophers that no other candidate could bring, that in and of itself would make him the top candidate in my book.

Why wouldn't he be able to relate with young adults/kids? He's a father (I know he doesn't have high school aged kids anymore) and he's worked with college students as a job for the past 40 years. He might not be cool and hip, but I also don't think he's just a grumpy old turd when recruiting.

As for recruiting - He got us Charles Buggs. Buggs mentioned his relationship with Tubby in every interview. I believe he was also the main recruiter in getting Eliason and Ellenson. Wasn't he really involved in Andre's recruitment, too?

When we sign "spring recruits", I think people become frustrated and search for answers. I don't think there's any real evidence that Tubby is a bad recruiter. A more fair question would be how well can Jirsa and Saul recruit? I've only heard Jirsa being mentioned by recruits several times, and never as the primary recruiter, and it seems like Saul never gets mentioned by recruits.

He's obviously involved with every player that commits here because he is the head coach.

GopherPlaya,

Here's several questions I'd like you to answer if you have time:

1. What do you like about Tubby? Surely, you can't dislike EVERYTHING about the man.
2. How much of the blame lays on the assistants?
3. Are the assistants as disliked as Tubby?
4. Would a shakeup of the assistant coaches help? Vince needs to stay. He has the best relationship with Tyus, Reid, and especially Rashad. But would adding another ace recruiter and an offensive mind drastically help?
5. In terms of skill development, not recruiting, how much does not having a practice facility matter? Are you usually able to practice individually in the Barn or the Pavillion?

GopherPlaya-thanks for your contributions

2 Questions if you have the time

1. Tubby often screams at players (especially when the ball is on the wing) to SWING IT or MOVE THE BALL! A lot of times the guy on the wing doesn't have a pass to make because there is not a strong post up and the defender is overplaying the pas back to the top of the key. It seems to me like the wing players often get nervous and make a mistake as this point because they feel like Tubby only wants them to pass the ball and thus, feel like they can't drive or shoot. The guy on the wing then tries to force a pass which results in a turnover. Has it been your experience that guys play "scared" for a lack of a better word in the half court offense?

2. I have heard from several sources that Tubby doesn't work as hard as his peers do, specifically regarding the time and effort spent on the recruiting trail. Does this carry over to practice? Do guys feel like Tubby is willing to do anything/everything to win or that he's just in it to collect a paycheck at this point?

Yes he has everybody scared to shoot why do you think they just pass pass pass until the shot clock runs out. Nobody has confidence to do anything with it because in there mind tubbys there saying make 10,000 passes before you shot. Just go look at all the transfers stats and see how they have become better players after they have left.

Guys think tubby is over the hill his own team guys have told me numerous times how he doesnt know what he is talking about as far as x's and o's he is terrible. His defensive coaching is great its good but offense is terrible they have told me. After coming out of huddles things were unclear as what to do at crucial times. He scribbles on the board and guys dont know where to go etc.. and the ast cant say anything because its tubby time... and if you dont believe me hell look at all the plays he has drawn up at the end of the shot clock the all look out of wack. Correct me if im wrong guys look lost like they dont know what to do.

Im glad you can see that because it is not alright and ill be the first to say it on all the players and former players be half

Well tubby has been known to be a good defensive coach. He does get the most out of the players there.
The ast. I dont blame much on them because they have a job to do families to feed so there isn't much they can say or do. They all have to try and speak a little here in there from what I hear and I have been at games where tubby has curse his ast out like there were little kids. Very disrespectful but at the same time they have families to feed.

changing ast will not help tubby he is an old succesful man stuck in his ways he is to old to change or be changed you know. Plus he is very stubborn what can you really say to a man who has had success like he has. The thing is his way will no longer work he is over the hill so what use to work won't with his current players and players of the future. The game has changed kids have changed he cant relate anymore. He is to old to change which is why its time for him to leave and remove himself as a coach. He will never get tyus or vaughn why would they come when they dont see players developing they dont see good offense to show case their skills. They dont see winning trust me they know what is going on as well.

It matters but not as much as people may thing U of M is a good school a good job you can get things done here. Listen think about this with the talent he had who is he better then in the big ten when it comes to coachs. Painter no, izzo no, crean no,the iowa coach no he is winning and he is at iowa for god sake, the Nw coach no way he does great with the talent he gets which isnt much, MU coach no, Ill maybe but he is new, osu no, bo ryan now f n way he has less talent but every year he is in the hunt. Just think about it he is the worse coach in the B1G period and he will not get tyus of Vaughn trust.

Think about this everybody and Im not trying to bash him Im just telling the truth. If he does go to the tourney was he worth all those years and money? What are really the standards for coaching in minnesota? If monson had got a 6 yr extension and done this we would all be saying fire him right? Just because tubby smith is tubby smith he gets a pass? Why do you think UK got rid of him, Ill tell you why because you have all americans just knocking at the door to come there. You do not have to recruit and he could not even get the best players to come there when he was there. How crazy is that sure he won so sec titles. Also a championship with pitino recruits but think about this if her never has hoffarber ( monson recruit) damian Johnson ( monson recruit) westbook aka the badger killer (monson recruit) Al nolan with all his steals and his ability to get guys like Hoff going (monson recruit)... All his players are the ones that transfered beside Kevin payton...There is something going on here that the people are not paying attention to lets look harder people. Take you blinders off and you will see the truth it is time for him to go...

Also like I said before I am closer then you all would ever even guess Im as close as the coachs who have names on this board, and yes the ast have secret names on this board and I have a msg for them as well. Do not think to hard on who I am because you will just be frying your brain HA! because I know they are watching. What you guys may not know as well is players, they read these boards daily and if you are a true fan. Coming on here and seeing there self get bashed is not what you want to see it does not help the fact at all. Trust me when I say they read this because they do, They talked about gopherhole and the people on here making comments that do not know what is going on. Like I said I understand thought because you all are not informed you dont have a clue what is really going on behind close doors. If you open your eyes and look and the trends tubby's teams have every yr start out great finish horrible get a spark here and there at the end you would understand. It is him not the players. They use to use the excuse that he did not have his players well *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# now he does. No Injuries no anything and you finish 8-10 in the B1G you did that your first yr. its your 6th season really and you have had 6 players transfer? Open your eyes people Im tired of this so I decided to come back to this board we need a change soon it cant be more obvious then this year.

Have you talked to Woody lately?

What is your scoop on his take and position on Tubby?

Interesting how different fans see the same play differently. I see the Gophers offense as being ineffective BECAUSE they don't pass well. You see them passing too much. Interesting.

You make great valid points, but for some of us, it is really hard to look past the grammar and spelling errors. I hope your name isn't true, because it makes me sad about player education in both HS and college.

Methinks the grammar is a good ruse. The more you write like you do, the easier you are to identify. Identify me as in the Tubby-needs-to-go club. I will never watch or listen to a Tubby-coached team again! As a Gopher fan, this is unacceptable. It's not the wins and losses. It's the pissy attitude of players and coaches to one another. It doesn't look like anyone cares. At $2 M per season, as Playa suggests, it is unacceptable.
