Statement from Athletics Director Mark Coyle per the U of MN

Now that our regular season is complete, Tracy and I have begun to discuss this past season and the plan for our program moving forward. He is our head football coach. As is the case with every one of our head coaches, he has my full support. I will do whatever I can to help him and our students achieve at the highest levels.

Our football program has now won eight games in the regular season three times in four seasons. We expect that our program will continue to grow and I am committed to putting us in a position to do so. This includes working with Coach Claeys to evaluate where we need to improve and what each of us can do to ensure we meet our expectations
 


Great news! Congrats to Claeys and staff on the good season - now on to the recruiting trail, the bowl game and beyond!
 

Hmmmmm.

Although on the surface it seems that would settle it, it does sound a little "vote of confidence"-y. There is no specific mention of "extension" or "new contract." Might be reading too much into it and I should probably just take it at face value, and take Coyle's words as the whole truth.

Can you hear it? The sound of hearts breaking all over GopherHole. Guess you'll all have to put up with the fat, poorly dressed, inarticulate, accent-having, soft-spoken, 8-game-winning coach for another season.

Maybe so lol "He is our Head Football Coach." The AD does need some negotiating space on the extension you know. Tracy now has a lawyer.

I'm fine with it, but without a firm x year extension in hand some would say this is still a recruiting hindrance. If Coyle mortgages the house, or barn then I won't be ok with it. Need more details.
 

I'll take one basement recruiting class. And another. And another. And another.

Tracy is a recruiting hindrance.
 

It's nice to have an AD who can make a timely decision. I'm OK with it. But I hope they have some new marketing geniuses to help fill the place at least 2/3 full next year.
 




Be interesting to see if they let him play out another year without an extension. Correct me if I'm wrong, there is no acknowledgment of an extension, just vague references to whatever he needs to help?
 

Coyle holds all the cards.

Nominal extension, cheapest possible buy-out for the entire staff.

Seems the most prudent way to go.

Yeah that statement gave me the vibe that the AD is firmly behind Claeys but there won't be an extension this off season. Basically Claeys has to prove himself next season, or at least the first half of the season.

Will be interesting to see what the contract looks like. Length, if it's heavily incentive based, buy-out, all should give us an idea as to what Coyle is thinking.

All of those things can be worked on and improved to some extent for image purposes. He needs a dose of coach Kills charm and fire and salesmanship of the program. Coach Kill sounded like a Southerner and had goofy teeth and people still believed in him.
He has been a winner and has the program close to turning, now he has to sell the guys that are here and future Gophers.

There has to be more people in the stadium then this last season, way to few fans. Like it or not the Head coach does affect ticket sales as the face of the program. He just needs to be a little more passionate about selling the good things of this program. I don't understand why he cannot be more animated with the media and a little more approachable and affable with fans. Even serious dudes, that are thinking types can open up and sell the program they lead.

Dude's laid back we get that, if you're not comfortable selling then get Sherrels, Anderson, Sawvel, and Johnson out in the media talking up this team and program.
 

Would anyone even agree to a two year extension with no buy out. Would that even help in terms of recruiting.
