University of Minnesota Board of Regents chair Dean Johnson voiced strong support for Gophers football coach Tracy Claeys on Sunday but said any decision regarding Claeys' contract will be made by athletic director Mark Coyle.

Coyle has yet to say which way he's leaning, but university officials expect him to publicly address Claeys' future soon. The Gophers closed their 8-4 regular season by blowing a 10-point second-half lead in Saturday's 31-17 loss at Wisconsin.

Johnson said all Minnesota fans were disappointed with the team's 13th consecutive loss to Wisconsin.

"But when you look at these matters, you have to look at the totality of the season, and 8-4 is very respectable," Johnson said. "Tracy Claeys, in my opinion, has done a very good job. He's assembled a great coaching staff with great values.

"The grade-point averages for the football team have increased, the graduation rate has increased, and those are all positive, positive things."

"You look around the country; Les Miles loses two games [at LSU] — he's gone," Dean Johnson said. "Charlie Strong loses to Kansas, he's packing his bags. I don't think we exactly do it that way in Minnesota. We take our time. We're thoughtful. We want to be strategic and look at the grand picture of our athletic department and our coaches, their values, but most importantly our student-athletes.

"When all is said and done, stability is a good thing. Stability in any program — and yes, with appropriate adjustments — but you start changing out personnel, you've got these players who have to get to know new coaches. So I err on the side of stability."

Go Gophers!!

I'd like to see a more dynamic recruiter on the offensive side of the ball. Could be accomplished with a position coach change by Johnson & Claeys.

Really? How many coaching changes have we made in the last 50-years? How much time and thoughtfulness did we employ when canning Mason? It's good to know that we are not like those idiots in TX and other places with those loser programs.

The "safe" route will be to extend him with (hopefully) an easy buy out. A river boat gamblin' AD that knows what he wants and how to get there brings in his own man. But, the bellyflop factor is high if his guy flops next year, or the year after, or never pans out. And the fan base will then say how can you fire a coach that won 8 games (even if it was a historically weak slate).

So, a politician-administrator, and I've seen nothing out of either Coyle or Kaler that suggests that they are anything but, will take the safe route. Plausible deniability, layers of bureaucracy, the whole nine yards. And you know what? I think most of use are ok with that. We're not jumping up and down about Claeys, but we love the fact we can play defense. That's a pretty big thing for this program.

The downside if Claeys fails have been discussed and well illustrated: poor recruiting classes, poor fundraising begest a bigger rebuilding job for the next guy and THAT means the applicant pool will be smaller, perhaps significantly smaller.

If I'm betting though, I think Coyle extends.

If Coyle is going to extend, get some balls and extend with some real stability. Extending with a, school friendly, low buyout is not saying Claeys is his guy.

Make it so there are 5-6 years remaining. If done right that gives everyone 2-3 years of evaluation and eliminates the annual speculation.

Nobody should ever feel safe in their job. Particularly someone who IMO underperformed this season. The average recruit isn't going to care if his buyout is 1 or 5 million.

But they care if he doesn't have a contract past 4 years.

Any recruit that thinks their coach couldn't be fired 1-3 years after the sign their LOI is delusional. I do think they need at least a 4 year deal but Claeys has close to zero leverage. They don't need to shoot the moon on this thing.

I agree he has little leverage, but you also have to show you competitively value your coach.

What kind of numbers are you thinking?

First time coach, I'm thinking a deal similar to Kill's when he arrived would be fair. Bottom tier of the Big Ten and that's still a lottery ticket. As soon as he shows that he is growing into the position it will be renegotiated. Absolutely no chance he leaves for another Power 5 team (at this time) and the money is much worse outside of that. I could see Sawvel being lured away and I'd be more upset about that.

I don't think the U value's Claeys, which explains his low contract numbers. He was merely hired as a stop gap.

He's already shown he can beat everyone he's suppose to and be competitive with every team. For that and the defense he's built, he should be paid in the 7-9 range for conference.

Spotlight is definitely on Coyle this week.

I tend to be all in or all out on this decision.

It's this pretentious, we-do-things-a-little-different-here crap that has led to 50 years of irrelevance.

Most likely a contract extension to four or five years with low buyout will be in order for Claeys.

He has to show progress with the current & incoming players by showing that the Gophers can beat ranked and upper tier B1G teams regularly. He also has to show he can recruit. Without good recruiting, this program is in trouble. Jerry Kill could charmed the pants off the recruits and their parents. I don't know how Tracy Claeys is at closing the deal.

Claeys should work with a PR consultant to polish his public image and demeaner. He is a good X & O guy that does not appear comfortable with the public. Anything that can help in the fundraising will be a plus.

For Jay & Bart's sake, they need to show marked improvements on offense.

Go Gophers!

He was supposed to beat Iowa. At least in my mind. when youre dealing with millions of dollars there is no need to overpay. Where is he going to go?

If the defense continues to carry the team it won't be long until Sawvel takes off. Then we will find out who is replaceable.

If he had beaten any of one of PSU, Iowa, Nebraska, or Wisconsin, we will have had a better taste in our mouths.

agreed.

It should have been clear that Gutekunst wasn't the right guy when he lost 63-0 to Oklahoma and followed that up with a loss to Pacific. Instead they stuck with him for years while the program slipped, slipped and slipped some more. He was hired for continuity in the hope (not the belief) that he'd end up being a standout coach. Does that sound familiar?

The losing of winnable games this year and the slump in recruiting results are warning signs. We can still hope, but the hopes are dimmer than they were last year at this time. There's a great danger of sticking with this plan for too long. There's a lot that can be lost.

Claeys already makes more than Kill did when he first arrived he won't take a pay cut

count me as one who thinks TC is likely Gutekunst 2.0

Gute had 4 mediocre years and two bad years. 1986, the year we lost to Oklahoma and Pacific, was a mediocre year. won 6 games and then lost in the liberty bowl. Beating Michigan, in Michigan, saved the 1986 season

Smells like Tubby 2.0. Are we pulling the trigger early or are we going to wait until the rapture hits?

Either way, the coach coming in will unlikely replicate the success of his predecessor. Pitino has yet to do this in year 4, fasten your seatbelts, going to be a bumpy 4 years regardless in my eyes.

Stability at being poor to mediocre...that's the Minnesota way...good job Dean Johnson...glad you are happy with being subpar. That's the Minnesota way.

STrib: University officials expect Coyle to publicly address Claeys' future s...

If he had beaten any of one of PSU, Iowa, Nebraska, or Wisconsin, we will have had a better taste in our mouths.

If, if, if.......

That can go both ways you know. We r damn lucky we beat Rutgers and we could have easily lost to a 4 win Oregon State team that we beat by a TD. If those go the other way Clayes is 6-6 and already fired. The fact is he is hanging by a thread. It can go either way. I have followed Gopher football enough to know that the admin will not have the guts to cut him loose. They will be too worried about the optics of firing an 8 win coach.

In my opinion he should be gone provided we have Miles, Fleck, Strong or Kiffjn in the fold and ready. This staff has been here 6 years and they have yet to beat Wisconsin. That in itself does it for me. That is almost half of the current 13 game losing streak and they have lost Iowa more than they have won. In addition, they have failed to develop anyone competent enough at the QB position to beat anyone better than an average team. Six years of that is enough for me. I'm sure I will be disappointed with Coyle's decision.

Interesting that Ryan Burns thinks an extension has to be announced in next 48 hours or things will get interesting.

Could something be up with a coach still working this weekend?

How smug to imply we do things differently here.

Yes. We're so different.
Look how good we've done with it.
