Source tells Chad Hartman that Flip Saunders has now emerged as the leading candidate

The fact is, no one knows for sure how any coach we hire will do. If it is Flip, so be it.

But lets give him a chance and cheer on the Gophers to hopefully many many wins!

How do you develop young players when your GM gives you Ebi or has no draft picks(Joe Smith)? Name young player he didn't develop. He didn't have many thanks to Mchale.

READ WHAT I POSTED.

I said "in his defense, he has never had the chance to develop a lot of young talent". You think MAYBE that's what I was alluding to?

I agree with you, he wasn't given the opportunity to develop a lot of younger players. I wasn't saying "he's bad at it", I was saying that he didn't really do it in the NBA, largely because of a lack of opportunity.

Why hasn’t anyone mentioned the risk of scandal with Flip? Have it on good authority that more than one member of the University dance line regularly spends the night at his house. Not only that, it’s been going on for years.

Soo...is Common just being an idiot, or is Flip actually going to be our next coach?

Mark Rosen has made it sound like Flip has a lot of support from Boosters. If this is true and it leads to breaking ground on a new practice facility in the next 12 months, then this hire will be a win.

Common has broke random stuff before. I believe he broke the news that Favre was going to play in the Chicago game at TCF before anyone else. I actually believe him.

My issue with Flip isn't the lack of college coaching experience or recruiting. Hoiberg has built the blueprint for how to make the transition - you hire really good assistants.

My issue is the age differential of Flip, at 58 years old, and college players. My perception of the rising stars in coaching is that they're better able to relate/recruit/coach college kids because they're closer in experience to them. Stevens is 36, Shaka is 35, Fred is 40. I personally think we should take a chance on someone younger, who is rising in the assistant or mid-major coaching world. Don't know who that is, but i'd say we're in a bind right now, and taking a big chance on an unproven younger coach is a better play than Flip.

I know that younger coaches can't help the fact, but there are a LOT of reasons to have someone who has "been there..." and someone the BOOSTERS like so they can help Flip build the YOUNG HIGH SCHOOLERS a knock-out Practice facility that will knock their sox off...or...at least will even things up for the U of M Program a little bit.

And, what the heck: IF you hire a 35 year old...within 5 years he's over 40. 58 is way cooler than over 40. And, if that 35 year old has a whiff of success, by the time he's 38 he'll be taking a job somewhere else because he doesn't like it here as well as his home area in the south...or the east...or the west. The Minnesota High School Coaches will like this hire for the most part. Minnesotan's will like this hire for the most part. THAT still counts. I really am pleased to see an M-MAN as the leader of our Men's Hoops Program!

Communicating is a SKILL and Flip is a COMMUNICATOR. If Flip is the one: this is great!

I'd rather be 40 than 58.

We need a national college basketball reporter to tweet something, then it will seem more legitimate. Local stuff is nice, but they've been way off on a lot of things so far.

Damian Johnson on the rumor of Flip being the guy:

Why would DJ be juiced about some old fossil? He's a hip young guy. :)

Interesting that Flip's last tweet says he is heading to Indy for the sweet sixteen...

The same Marbury who had his least amount of FTA (in a full season) in his prime here than he did everywhere else?

In his prime? He was 20 years old when he was here. Would love to have seen him in 9th grade!

Hoiberg never coached in college before Iowa St and that has turned out pretty well. Flip coached Freddie in the NBA and Hoiberg admits a lot of the offense he runs in Ames is from Flip. So those who want more offense you should be thrilled. If Flip can take the program to the next level after Tubby and secure backing for facilities than maybe we can get "the next big name" to keep it going once Flip steps down. Maybe it's the optimist in me but I think it's a win for Gopher fans.

Wasn't there some big meeting between boosters and Teague to discuss performance of the basketball team?

And Doogie reported NT was in Indy ... Maybe Doogie presumed he was talking to the wrong coach?

Plus Flip's probably already been to the Vu, Sex World and ridden the coaster at MOA, so he can get right down to business, he doesn't have to waste time getting acclimated to the city.

That is the only potential positive I see from a Flip hire. But even that's not a given.

Amelia blog: Reports: Flip Saunders emerging as Gophers' top target? per Amelia:

Based on what I’ve been told, however, Saunders does not fit the bill entirely. Athletic director Norwood Teague and right-hand man Mike Ellis went into the search wanting their own “guy” in the job, ideally one who is deeply entrenched in the college game now – an up-and-comer versus a former coach, even one that was successful. They want someone that can grow with the program and relate to the athletes.

Go Gophers!!

I have no idea who this dude is but I got a kick out of his tweet. For the record I would love to see Flip get a shot if he wants it.
