Source tells Chad Hartman that Flip Saunders has now emerged as the leading candidate

Are you comparing Flip to a chick who is crazy but does fun stuff in the bedroom so you stay with her for a little while before finding the one? And then you're more experienced in bed (better facilities) and better prepared to attract "The One". Makes sense to me.

Perfect analogy. Haha

Flip was always my FAVORITE choice:
* Name recognition
* Personality (Players Coach)
* Style of Play - Up and Down - High Octane
* NBA ties
* Donors love Him
* Alumni
and the list goes on....

The key part to this is the Assistants! I really hope Trent Tucker gets on the staff!

Understand what you're saying but is it possible that this is an indication that they are settling? Teague and Ellis couldn't get done something else because of the facilities situation?

Not a knock on Filp at all just asking a question.

I don't think it's really a simple matter of settling. It's more like a lot of people have expressed here: how often do you have an alumnus with his background who's dying to take a crack at the job and would never dream of bolting for another opportunity? It's very very similar to the ISU situation, except that Flip has way more coaching experience and accomplishments than Fred did.

Those girls ruin you.

The One isn't nearly as likely to let you do the kind of nonsense that the crazy ones let you do.

I never thought of Flip's teams as high octane.

His only good NBA teams were ALL veterans. He was not known as a guy in the NBA who developed younger players. He didn't have the chance in MN (the Joe Smith fiasco), he took a veteran team in Detroit, and Washington was a disaster.

He might have worked wonders in the CBA and at GOlden Valley Lutheran.

You've just described every good team in the NBA.

Can you guys please explain this?

Cripes.

I'm sure these guys hold the same opinion that I've been giving this entire week. My guess is that these guys also probably follow the Timberwolves a bit closer than most of the other people on Gopherhole.

I have TWolves season tickets and my friends who are Wolves fans (most of them not Gopher fans) aren't big fans of Flip.

Well, unless we can get Marshall... I'd go for Flip also.

Flip would probably bring NBA assistants in, and I'm sure they'll teach these kids better skills than people like Saul Smith. Recruits' eyes would light up knowing that the coaches know what it takes to be in the NBA. Heck, I'd try to bring in Garnett as an assistant. Hello number one recruit in the nation, meet Kevin Garnett.

Ok, so I'm dreaming a bit.

I don't know about Flip's ability to develop players, but if he can recruit good ones and operate an offense and defense at a high level, he'll be alright at least, if not good. Who he can recruit to the school is gonna be the main thing here, and I'm not talking the Big 3 in 2014, I'm talking nationally and down the line a few years as well. I don't know whether he'll be good at it or not, but it is an unknown that can't be ignored.

How many different ways do I have to explain it?

What's the single most important facet of the job for any college coach in any sport at any level?

If you said anything other than "recruiting", you're wrong.

How much recruiting has Flip done since 1986?

The same amount as I have.

Couple that with his jump-shot offense, and I'm tingly all over.

Completely false and bs. Hardcore Timberwolves fans have and will always hold Flip in high regard.

Bob...respectfully disagree with premise. KG wasn't a veteran, Marbury's best years were under Flip...and Chauncy's turnaround started under Flip's watch. To be honest, he did a good job coaching and developing, not so much with drafting (with McHale). To determine if he failed the young talent, did they get better elsewhere? No,they continued to stink.

The team did worse in Detroit when he left, and Washington had one player of talent, John Wall. How could he succeed there? The rest of the Wizards were criminals or knuckleheads.

What?

Nope. There are plenty of coaches who have worked wonders with younger players.

Name a good NBA team of rookies? The closest would be OKC, but tbh I could win with Durabt and Westbrook, and they are considered veterans now and winning.

Translation... "All other candidates said 'Thanks for considering us - we got nice raises' and now nobody else will answer Norwood's calls except Flip."

When you only have one choice choose it.

Flip's offense benefits shooters. Not a good mix given the current roster because we have only 2 (maybe 3) holdovers that can hit an open shot. Maybe this will help reaffirm Alvin Ellis' committment to the program.

You don't hire a coach based on the current roster but just an interesting thought. Flip's teams offensively tend to be good at shooting, committ few turnovers, but also don't get to the line very often.

My issue with Flip isn't the lack of college coaching experience or recruiting. Hoiberg has built the blueprint for how to make the transition - you hire really good assistants.

My issue is the age differential of Flip, at 58 years old, and college players. My perception of the rising stars in coaching is that they're better able to relate/recruit/coach college kids because they're closer in experience to them. Stevens is 36, Shaka is 35, Fred is 40. I personally think we should take a chance on someone younger, who is rising in the assistant or mid-major coaching world. Don't know who that is, but i'd say we're in a bind right now, and taking a big chance on an unproven younger coach is a better play than Flip.

FTB is having a temper tantrum on Twitter right now as he often does. It would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic.

It seems that a key selling point of Saunders is that he already has a sizable bloc of haters on this board, so we can hit the ground running in that regard. No awkward honeymoon period.

Tell me a player that he had that had the ability to drive to the bucket!?!? Flip will tailor his offense to the personnel he has, the guy isn't an idiot.

Well played.

Tell Alvin Ellis that he's a fool for expressing a desire to stick with the U if it's that old geezer in the job.

Whatever Tubby could do...Flip can do better.

I gave Tubby four years to prove himself before it became obvious that he was incapable of producing above .500 in the B1G and winning more than one game in the NCAA tournament.

I'll give Flip the same latitude. He's equally well known and he has a long track record as a quality coach. He would be...at minimum...equal to what Tubby produced here in Minnesota. Those who were kissing Tubby's keister should fall right in line with Flip because he'd be at least equal to what Tubby gave the U of MN.

In addition to Flips coaching skills I will pay good money to be at a Gopher v Badger or Gopher v Spartan game where both coaches display their phenomenal facial tics and displays of angst! Just watching the coaches would be worth the price of admission.

Marbury would agree with that. Nothing but drive to the hole or throw up a 3 when he was here.
