Pitino Post Game Press Conference - Not sure about Joey King status, not happy with D

Disagree, just like shooting free throws on your own does not correlates to in game ft%.

Huh?! So free throw shooting is just a god given talent some have and some don't and practicing them won't improve your percentage? Or am I reading you wrong?

The difference is this: fans had several years of experience with Orlando and are expressing their feelings based on that experience. There are some, though, who are jumping at the first chance to run the new coach down, only because of their bitterness about Smith being fired and that Pitino happens to be his replacement.

I've seen some doing the running down of the new coach but the bitterness about being Smith being fired seems to be missing as far as I can see. I've seen that from only one or two posters other than that not sure where you get that from. Maybe I missed a bunch though.

Now that Parski is banned, it seems like Dpo and "The-Real-Truth" are the only people who are obviously bitter. We probably just haven't caught on to others who aren't as outspoken about it as them.

McNeil? He's a true freshman that Pitino recruited. He's not going anywhere even if he doesn't play much this year. Buggs or Wally I could see not being around next year.

If you push Wally out you lolse Henry & he's the real prize. After losing out on Reid Travis, we can't lose out on a athletic 6'10" PF who can shoot 3's, lives in our back yard & has a brother on the team.

Buggs is young enough that he'll be a player too in time. He's got two main things working against him. 1) It usually takes bigs longer to develop & he's a legit 6'9". 2) If you recall there was an article last winter about Buggs where he said he'd never played with his back to the basket in his life & was just starting to learn how to play in the paint. This is a guy who's a jump shooter by nature & we're asking him to play PF in the B1G. It'll take a while to learn a whole new position, especially when you're not mentally suited to the position to begin with.

Come on now, Tubby never got a grace period either. There was a whole cult of hate towards Tubby that many of our fans were part of. In fact, Tubby started taking serious grief here before he even had the keys to the gym. I don't think anyone's suggesting we fire Pitino (if they are, they're morons), but fans questioning coaching decisions is normal & Pitino has made some questionable decisions.

As for the state of the team we're just not very good. Elliot is good. Mo should be a solid player. Oto is solid. This is reality. We literally don't have another player over 6'7" who can provide any quality minutes outside of those 3 & it's gonna be a long winter.

I'm not sure if you're serious. For the life of me I don't remember anything like that, other than a few wingnuts from Kentucky who soon went away or were banned.

King? The Big Ten season will be a lot more telling, obviously, but I've seen enough of King to think he'll be a solid contributor.

Like the decision to pull the press and switch to zone that basically won us the Richmond game?

I am still a believer that sophomore slumps exist. Unfortunate for Wally is that he has never been given any time last year (when he should have red-shirted) to get used to the speed and complexity of Big10 D1 basketball. So I think we are seeing some growing pains as he is being thrown into the fire.

The kid offensively is a bit slow with not a lot of confidence; furthermore, defensively he gets himself into situations where he gets stuck in picks that he could simply avoid.

I am pretty confident that the more time he gets on the court the more he will start to see plays form at this much faster paced level of the game and we should see the confidence grow and as result more of a contribution.

I am certain that this will be the case for Buggs too.

His strength is supposed to be his outside shooting, but so far he seems willing to mix it some inside. We'll need more of that in Maui and then starting in January.

I don't remember that either. I remember everyone loving him in his first year.

Here's an update on Joey Kind that Gopher Hoops tweeted:

Joey King update: has a fracture on the rt side of jaw. Will undergo minor surgery today. Out vs. Wofford. Will travel w/ team to Maui.

Overall, that sounds like good news? That kind of leaves it open ended that he might be available in Maui? If he can't go against Syracuse, wow, it's going to be small-ball all the way without Walker and King.

Let's hope the perimeter shots are fallin' vs. Boeheim's zone or it'll be a long afternoon. How about a perimeter performance reminiscent of the 3-point shooting clinic the Gophers put on vs. Temple's vaunted zone in the 2nd round of the 1997 NCAA tourney?

I was thinking the same thing. Assuming he can wear a mask or something it's probably better than a concussion in terms of how long he'll be out.

I was hoping for an intimidating looking bruise.

Anytime I see "fracture" or "surgery," I get a little apprehensive. You don't want to get bumped around a lot before it heals.

I'd say better than a concussion, but still not that good of news. But that's just my 2 cents.

If he is having his jaw wired shut, this sounds like more than a one game problem.

Exactly. The knocks on Tubby came only after we saw clear patterns emerge--terrible 3 point defending, lack of offensive flow, and poor plays out of timeouts. This took the better part of the first season, but the patterns were crystal clear to anyone with a lick of basketball knowledge. Later on, it became clear that the players were becoming afraid of making mistakes, and would (sometimes) be thrown under the bus after/between games.

I'm happy with his willingness to do the dirty work and get physical down low. Like Coach mentioned he is going after every rebound, lose ball, etc. with all he's got.

Coach also said he has some nasty to him and teams needs a player like that.

Exactly. CRG is either attempting sarcasm or totally delusional.

My bad. I thought King was 6'7", so that's on me. I'll rephrase this. Elliot, Mo & Oto are the only front court players who can defend, rebound & handle physical B1G forwards. King has grabbed 6 rebounds total, in 5 games against smaller, non conference opponents & since this was the scouting report on him coming in, I don't think it's an anomaly.

Neither. There were many Minnesota fans, mostly younger b-ball junkie types who are surfing ESPN & whatnot were totally against the hiring of Tubby. They said he'd shot his load, was mailing it in, etc. In retrospect they may have been right, but Tubby was getting flack before he ever stepped on campus.

I guess I wasn't reading the comment section of espn. As Bad said I never saw it on GH or any other place I frequent.

And as you said they were right.
