Pitino Post Game Press Conference - Not sure about Joey King status, not happy with D

I'm surprised Buggs can't contribute just for defense and rebounding. I wonder if those stupid three balls he launches are the reason coach can't trust him.

He's a defensive liability too, if you watch when he's in, the other players are consistently pointing to him on where to go. He may just need some extra time to understand the schemes.

Makes me wonder who is transferring on their own or getting forced out next year of Wally - McNeil - Buggs.

New coach, someone typically leaves.

McNeil? He's a true freshman that Pitino recruited. He's not going anywhere even if he doesn't play much this year. Buggs or Wally I could see not being around next year.

That's what I notice when watching him too. I really don't know that it's a physical skill thing with him. It seems that he's not picking up the nuances he needs in order to be reliable out there. If by the end of non-conference he's still languishing at the end of the bench hardly getting any minutes outside of garbage time, then it's likely his contributions will be pretty low this season.

Four undefeated games into his first season and we have people on the warpath after the coach. We knew that the cult of Tubby was going to have a vendetta against Pitino, but even this surprises me. This is going to make the GopherHole a crappy place to be in many respects for a long time.
Going to?

In my opinion the hole has been terrible since the Reid Travis signing/unsigning. That was the most fun leading up to and least fun coming out I've had on this board in the 4 years I've been following it and 2 years posting. Combine that with the Vaughn/ISU bs that is spilling into every thread and the Tubby bashing/hating... I actually do not like looking at the forum right now.

I just need to seem them play one game and I'll get excited again, but honestly, this place sucks right now!

Sounds like some GHers would like to go back to the 5 in,5 out sub patterns

Your getting a bit carried away here GP. Buggs has had a full redshirt year to improve his game and have something to contribute. No one is expecting 30-35 minutes a game, but a few minutes here and there to spell a starter should be expected. Not one moment on the court against a team like CCU is a bit concerning. Hopefully, with Coach Pitino, Buggs can identify the individual skills he needs to work on and ultimately he can become a solid player, but obviously Coach doesn't see him as a contributor at this time. Let me say it again, Buggs had an entire redshirt year to work on individual skills. What happened? Do we conclude that Buggs may not have much to contribute or do we conclude that Tubby did a terrible job of working with Buggs throughout last years redshirt season?

Jake was simply wondering if Buggs would ever contribute. You jump all over that question and insinuate that people are calling for his scholarship to be revoked. Do you see where you might have over reacted just a bit???

I'm not surprised by this at all, I commented early in he year I didn't feel he would contribute this year, he came in raw with very little inside/post skills, in the six years Tubby was here there just wasn't noticeable development of big men, they generally left with the same set of skills they came in with, Monson had an assistant coach that was excellent developing big men, Hagen is a good example of it, just never occurred with Tubby, I'm hoping that changes.

Agreed. It becomes more and more clear everyday who the Gopher fans are/were and who the Tubby Smith fans are/were.

I don't like the mindless criticism of Tubby, but also can't stand the unbated "This never would have happened under Tubby! I love Tubby! Tubby, Tubby, Tubby!"

It's fine to disagree with his firing, but taking joy in the team you supposedly cheer for not being perfect is a bit questionable. Why should anyone be happy a team has flaws? Unless you really don't like that team or have an alternate agenda. Some seem downright giddy every time the Gophers aren't perfect.
But it was okay for the Tubby bashers to be gleeful whenever he lost? Coming here after sofe of those loses was downright annoying as well.

Well aware. Doesn't mean anything.

McNeil may turn out to be fine & Pitino will coach him up and get him in more next year.

Not specific to any player, team or coach, but this happens; "If you want minutes this might not be the place for you"

Hang in there. I think all in all, there's a better group of guys than a year ago. This year we are having intelligent discussions on the players etc. I would appreciate it if we could keep references to the prior regime to a minimum.

I don't have the historical context that some of you have on this site, but it seems to me that this should be a forum for exchanging opinions/ideas which may or may not agree with your own. I could probably do without the petty name-calling, but I wouldn't want this to be purely a forum for cheerleading.

Regarding the Tubby bashing.....for better or worse, he's part of the story. 75% of the players on this team are his recruits. It's not realistic to completely separate the regimes at this point. In time, references to Tubby will continue to subside -- much as they have for Dutcher, Clem, and Monson.

Who are they?

I have no problem with him putting Wally and Mav at the end of the bench. I don't believe Wally can shoot at all & we all know who Mav is.

McNeil has been a scratch 3 of the 4 games, should have red-shirted.

I watch Wally closely in warmups, and he can certainly shoot. I just think he needs to earn more playing time by showing he can be focused and disciplined out there, play within the system and within his capabilities.

The difference is this: fans had several years of experience with Orlando and are expressing their feelings based on that experience. There are some, though, who are jumping at the first chance to run the new coach down, only because of their bitterness about Smith being fired and that Pitino happens to be his replacement.

Sounds a lot like the old stories of Oto-matic, which is encouraging... Kid needs confidence.

Warm-up shooting does not mean shiz.

He is not a good shooter, I've seen him brick and air-ball more threes then he has made.

Agree, as long as it's about the Gophers... Lately the heated debates have been about the merits of Carlson vs a degree at Stanford or the overall b school standings (and by "b" I don't mean basketball) or is Iowa a cesspool?

Let's talk about Pitinos offensive game plan or how he attacks a 2-3 zone or if he's recruiting the right type of players for BIG 10 play.... Get back to gopher basketball, please...

With all due respect, my observation from 24+ years of coming to games early and watching warmups is that warmup shooting correlates pretty tightly to in-game shooting.

Wally just needs to calm down a little out there.

Fair enough....

OMG your so right...kid is in his fourth game of his career and isn't breaking records. We should pull his scholly immediately. He is just never going to be any good.

Good lawd, some people on this board are clueless.

Wow. Take a breath, man. Contributing and breaking records are the same thing now? We were down 2 big men Tuesday and he still didn't play. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he had a post high school year at a prep school and a redshirt year. That is plenty of time to develop some type of game to play a couple minutes when we are desperate for a front court contributor. At one point, we had 4 guards (Hollins, Hollins, Mathieu and Smith) and Oto on the floor. That's a very small lineup.

I agree. He is running around like crazy. He is very athletic, but sometimes for guys like him, they need to slow down a bit.

If your goal is to make recruiting as difficult as possible, then the best thing you can do is recruit a player and encourage them to transfer the very next year. Genius strategy. Is that really what you want to do?

mental lapse???? Did anybody tell Richard that in GH mental lapse is called bad coaching???? Also, sometimes it is called throwing the players under the bus????

Go Gophers

You are not a Gopher fan. You are a Tubby fan. You're also incredibly stupid. How has this obvious troll not been banned?

Where did I say we should do it?

Happens all the time me'boy... no, programs don't want to make it a habit, but it happens from time to time.

In some cases it is justified, you have a bad apple, that thinks he is something he is not... You have to tell them like it is and go from there.

You didn't say we should, but the fact that you think it's a possibility is kind of ridiculous. Do you seriously not see how that would hurt recruiting? "Don't go to Minnesota, if you aren't a major contributor as a true freshman, they'll pull your scholarship. Just look at McNeil. They don't give their players a chance to develop. Is that a risk you want to take?"

If players getting scholarships pulled after one season by the same coach who recruited them while not getting in any sort of trouble is common, I'm sure you can provide at least one example. I'll be waiting to hear it.

Name calling is not good. Didn't your parents teach you that? I thought that I was in your ingore list. What happened?

When did I say you were on my ignore list? I can't think of anyone who I have on ignore. Lying (about being a Gopher fan) and trolling aren't good either. Maybe we can come to a mutual agreement. I won't call you names anymore if you stop pretending to be a Gopher fan and stop posting on GopherHole. Deal? Seems fair to me.

Maybe he assumes everyone has him on their ignore list at this point?
