Official Reaction To Gophers NCAA Seed/Matchup Thread

What the hell do you expect? All they have west is ocean, and all they have east is mountains. It's called captive audience. But, I do love Idaho.

Plus the hoards moving north from California.

Wow, thought we would get a little more respect on the national level. These analysts don't even know anything about our squad considering how much of a chance they are giving us vs UCLA

Maybe that's why we're such a fashionable pick. I think they're expecting a big time performance from Joseph Bertrand, too.

The game may hinge on Eric Harris' ability to get Willie Burton the rock in scoring position.

Good for the Gophers in making the dance. I wasn't nearly as confident as many on this board that the selection committee would pick the Gophers. I'm glad I was wrong and you folks were right.

It looks like UCLA's point guard broke his foot in the PAC 12 tourney, which bodes well for the Gophers winning their first NCAA tournament game in years.

Now go ahead, give me your best GH Gestapo abuse. I'll take it like a man!

tinyballs, thank you for admitting that you deserve your beating and abuse that you about to receive. At least you have balls enough to come here and take what you have coming, but your pseudo moses chickened out and got banned.

You are an all right guy, you just need to listen to old farts like me, now and then.

We just have to limit our offsides penalties.

Florida has Patrick Young a PF who is a similar athlete to Trevor, only more skilled offensively. Florida also has a poor man's Brian Kelley in Murphy. He's a 6-8 or 6-9 guy who can really shoot. The Florida guards are quick and dangerous but also streaky. If we can beat UCLA, we'll have a chance but will need Florida to have an off night. G-town scares me less than Florida.

I think Florida is SIGNIFICANTLY better than Georgetown. If it comes to that 3rd round matchup, take the Gators.

Tiny, you take way too much abuse on here. Keep posting.

Everybody is happy that the gophers got in, Don, but that doesn't change any of the issues regarding Tubby, the season to date and the state of the program. Tiny and Moses get it.

I have not recently said that. What I have said is "I want the kids to win" and I don't give a $hit if it is Tubby or Dan Monson, or Shaka, or Joe $hit the Rag Man.

Don is feeling his oats. I don't like it when Don is feeling his oats.

There's no reason for Tiny to take any abuse when the emperor is hardly wearing anything.

I will have you know that I am totally naked under my clothes. No hardly about it.

Was at the Oregon - UCLA game last night. They are very beatable. Saw a great Oregon sign, "UCLA, wear quitters end up."

Gotta love making the dance & most of the country thinking we can beat UCLA. I believe a lot of that is the talking heads making mention of our rebounding skills and UCLA's lack there of. I think this tournament is going to be filled with some great, unpredictable games. I wouldn't be surprised if none of the #1 or #2 seeds make it to the final four. What do I know? just enough not to bet my mortgage?

A little reality to keep in mind..... We beat Stanford on a freak/dumb last second foul when we were playing well. UCLA beat them twice in league play. They may not rebound, but they're doing something right (I know they're missing one of their good players). Should be fun.

Go Gophers!

Good post and very true. With this team, thing is certain.

Just say 10 'Hail Hoseas,' cheer hard on Friday and all is forgiven.

You are usually objective and not a troller like Moses, so no harm. You called it like you saw it.

Shama: Ex-U Coach: ‘Great Draw’ for Gophers

Former Gophers basketball coach Jim Dutcher predicts Minnesota will defeat UCLA on Friday in its NCAA Tournament opening game in Austin, Texas. “The Gophers got a great draw,” Dutcher told Sports Headliners last night.

The Gophers have struggled against teams effective on the inside but that’s not the Bruins. “They’re not a physical team, and the big advantage Minnesota’s got is their best perimeter player broke his foot in the conference tournament against Arizona,” Dutcher said. “Jordan Adams, he’s their second leading scorer. He’s by far their best three-point shooter.”

Dutcher believes the Gophers are not only more physical than UCLA but also deeper. “Their depth is really suspect,” he said.

UCLA’s games often involve scores in the 70s and beyond, a contrast to the low scoring, grind down the shot clock style Minnesota encountered in the Big Ten Conference. “You’ll get chances (against UCLA) to score on the open floor,” Dutcher said. “You’ll get some open looks from the perimeter. I think style wise it’s really an excellent draw for Minnesota.”

Dutcher not only believes Minnesota will win the game but when prompted he predicted the score. “I say the Gophers 77, UCLA 67.”

The Bruins, Pac-12 regular season champions with an overall 25-9 record, received a major upgrade in talent this season from their incoming freshmen led by two guards, Adams (15.3 average) and Shabazz Muhammad, the team’s leading scorer at 17.8. Redshirt junior forward Travis Wear is the team’s other double figures scorer at 11.2 points per game.

The Bruins lost 78-69 to Oregon in the Pac-12 Tournament title game last week. It was UCLA’s second loss to the Ducks this year. Dutcher pointed out that Oregon is a No. 12 seed in the Midwest Region while the Bruins are a No. 6 seed in the South Region.

The Gophers, the No. 11 seed in the South with an overall 20-12 record, have lost three consecutive games. They have won only five games since January 9 while UCLA has 13 wins during the same period. But, as Dutcher said, this game could be about styles and UCLA being without a key player in Adams.

If the Gophers defeat the Bruins, their opponent Sunday will almost certainly be No. 3 seed Florida. Dutcher believes the Gators will be too much for Minnesota. “There’s a reason they’re No. 3. They’re a good solid basketball team.”

Dutcher’s Final Four predictions? His choices are Louisville, New Mexico, Kansas and Syracuse. He likes Kansas to win the national championship on April 8 in Atlanta, praising Bill Self’s tournament coaching skills, plus the experience and talent of the players. “I just think they’ve got a lot going for them,” Dutcher said.

Dutcher and some other college basketball experts are leaving the Big Ten out of Final Four predictions despite the league’s reputation during the season of being the nation’s best conference. Dutcher doesn’t discredit the league’s overall strength but he likes the chances of other teams more.

Indiana, Dutcher said, is the Big Ten team most likely to reach Atlanta. “They’re a good team but they’re not a dominant team.”

Dutcher said the Hoosiers, Big Ten regular season champs, don’t have “big man depth” behind center Cody Zeller and that’s a problem in pursuing a national title. “They need Zeller to play a great game for them to win, and when he’s good, they’re good.” Dutcher said. “You saw at Williams Arena when he’s not good, they’re not as good. …”

In the highlight moment of their season, the Gophers defeated then No. 1 ranked Indiana, 77-73, on February 26. Minnesota’s only win since has been against lowly Penn State, beating the Nittany Lions, 73-44, on Senior Day March 2.

Go Gophers!!

Dutcher's right about Indiana. When Zeller's playing well and not in foul trouble, they might be the national title favorite. If not, a very different story. They sort of remind me of the New York Yankees: with that nice mix of players and high talent at every position, how did they lose any games this year? But they've been inconsistent, and Zeller particularly has been inconsistent. I still like them, though.

Ben Howland will be on the Herd in 15 minutes. For anyone interested to hear what he has to say.

matchups

Gophers catch a break playing ucla without Adams. The teams 2nd leading scorer and its best man to man defender. UCLA is also just a 34% 3 pt shooting team. UCLA's pg Drew averages 7.4 assists, and only 2.4 to per game. They start a big front line but are a very bad rebounding team. Muhammed is one of the NCAA's best scorers and after watching Paul carry the Illinois single handidly against us we need to do a better job.

Dre vs Drew 6'2" 180 pg sr. Drew is a pass first pg. Dre needs to have a big game and we have the advantage here.
Austin vs Powell 6'4" 215 so. Both are good defenders. Hopefully Austin has refound his 3pt shot. Austin has an advantage.
Coleman vs Muhammed 6'6"225. I dont see coleman guarding Muhammed, I think Austin will start on him but just a tough matchup. I would like to see Rodney on him if we go big. Lottery pick Muhammed has a huge advantage either way.
Rodney vs Anderson 6'9" 235 Fr. Anderson is a bit of a point forward but he is not a good shooter.
Trevor vs T. Wear 6'10" 230 JR. Wear is skilled but not athletic. We need Trevor to dominate this matchup. UCLA will double team Trevor we have to counter well, reverse the ball, and hopefully hit some of those jumpers.

UCLA's bench is shortened with Adams injury and a few transfers. Hopefully we can get some great minutes from EE, Welch, and Mav. We can, we should, and hopefully we will dominate the offensive glass. UCLA is big but not physical. They will double Trevor so we will need to reverse the ball and hit some shots. I like our chances.

I'm just sad the game is Friday. No wings with the game.
