Official Nebraska-Gophers Post-Game Thread

I don't get why people use the past to excuse the poor play of this years team. It's not just the losses but the way we lose. It's the late season collapse every season after great early season wins. The lack of improvement during the season is more than a trend. You listen to Tubby in his postgame and just shake your head. His coaching staff seem disengaged during games. The more I think about Rodney scoring 23 the first time against Nebraska and zero this game the more I realize something drastic is wrong not only with the coaching staff but the players we recruited.

When we comment about any other team in the country that inexplicably declines during the season, we typically conclude that there's something going on behind the scenes, that the coach has lost the team and/or vice versa, or that there is some other dysfunction involved. If I saw the same program do that three years straight from afar, I would really wonder what the heck is going on there.

When I woke up this morning and picked up my nausea where it left off last night, one of my first thoughts was, who's going to transfer after the season. Obviously I hope nobody, but I'm going to be holding my breath.

FanSinceTheFifties:

I completely agree with you, I think that just shows how dysfunctional our offense is. Nobody passes because nobody cuts to get open, and nobody cuts to get open because nobody passes...

I think you answered your own question. Tubby has not had any Tourney success, and he has given no indication that this season is any different from his other huge embarrassing failures (he's actually made a strong case that this season will end the exact same way...)

Agreed completely, which is why I'm saying as if this moment and based on this trend. I can't see him back. However, the season isn't over until you have no more games scheduled. The current trend is troubling, but this thing isn't over and there is no reason an elite 8 run isn't possible, even if the chances are seemingly low currently.

Unfortunately, I find myself agreeing with you.

Because that lineup was on the floor due to it being senior day. That's the only reason. The regular starters knew this. i.e., Dre Hollins knew he wouldn't start - because it was senior day.

Benching him at this point in the season (unless it's for senior day at home) is a bad and bizarre decision.

It wasn't a punishment to players like Dre. I want a coach that's willing to play his most effective lineup. Dre and others still got plenty of minutes. What is the coach supposed to do when the typical starters have lost the ability to shoot? You got to try to inject some scoring and rebounding (Ingram and Welsh) into that lineup. We could afford to have Coleman and Williams both playing with Dre and Austin when the latter were both shooting well. Now that they are in a funk, you need to split them up. At least Ingram is giving you really good defense and rebounds (compared to Williams) and Welsh can penetrate and hit shots (compared to Coleman). I would be more upset with Tubby if he hadn't tried this!

No problem with Welch and Ingram playing, but Dre needed to be in there from the start. Welch can play in place of Coleman, and Ingram can play in lieu of Austin or Williams. But you don't start a road game without your best player on the floor. Simply foolish.

You might want to watch the replay to refresh your memory. That last play took place with 24 seconds left, and dre ended up taking that contested 3 with about 12 seconds. The possession before i thought they should have went for a 2, but Tubby drew up an out of bounce play that got dre a wide open 3, and he missed.
Very true and on the contested 3 that Dre took, he had Welsh wide open to his left. I think either Dre had his mind made up he was going to shoot or the coaches said it was his shot to take.

I agree with you especially with how Austin is shooting right now.

One play last night that infuriated me. Rodney had the ball on the baseline. Quick swing to Austin on the wing. Quick swing to Mav at the top. Mav stands, holds, and passes to Andre on the other wing. Defense has time to catch up and Dre gets the ball stolen from him. Turnover, Nebraska to the FT line. Had Mav passed it to Dre immediately upon getting it he had a wide open 3 or at least a drive if the defender closed hard as he would have had to do to catch up. Dre could have also made a quick pass down low depending on how the D reacted.

When you stop and stall like that you just make life easy on a defense.

Agree completely. I can understand hanging onto the ball for a few seconds if someone is working down low to post up or something. But most of the time, it's just someone hanging onto the ball while everyone else does nothing.
