Official Nebraska-Gophers Post-Game Thread

I'm just as perplexed with the lineup change tonight but why are people acting like we've had different starting lineups just about every night? This is the first night, other than senior night and Rodney getting hurt, that we've had a different starting lineup in Big Ten action.

It's not just the starting line up. It's the random minutes everyone plays from game to game. Welch went from a DNP against Indiana to starting two straight. Tubby is just all over the place from game to game with his rotation.

Frightened Johnny - that's what they are. Scared to lose, scared to make plays, no confidence.

A frightened team misses their shots, but still plays their ass off. This team didn't play frightened, they played like they just couldn't give a shLt. Everyone but Ingram, EE, Mav, and maybe Welch should be ashamed of themselves after this one.

Great buzzer beater shot, though!!

Really, I think it all starts with the coaching staff's lineup decisions. Just bizarre.

Tubby doesn't seem to have any plan, or philosophy to which he would align his plan. The team looks confused, and it has nothing to do with an offense or defense being complicated. It has to do with players not having any clue what their role is because it changes game to game, and there is no consistent philosophy. The lineups change every game, and during the game. Tubby has no idea what he wants them to do on offense. I will just stop.

Never like that, so you can't guarantee anything. You still hanging with the Pro-Tubby group?

Yes why wouldn't I? He does deserve some of the blame tonight for changing the lineup but it is kind of hard to win when three of your top five players don't score a point.

But they did play hard on D for most of the game.

The win over Indiana is looking huge, if you know what I mean.

His starting lineups haven't changed, but the rotations changes dramatically from game to game, as does their plan of attack. Pick something and do it well. Basketball is not a complicated game, unless you have no idea what your plan is.

Because he's never finished above .500 in the big ten. Even monson did it twice.

Well said, IMO. just looks like mass confusion and lack of confidence.

Not really. Where was their rebounding edge? Where were the blocked shots, the steals, and everything else? Where were the ball deflections? No one moved their feet, no one fought for position (think of Almeda's total lane clear-outs and offensive boards); and in a tacky-tack called game by the refs, no one came close to foul trouble. Just because Nebraska didn't have a lot of points doesn't say much - much of that was because the game was brought to a half-court standstill with bad offense of both ends of the court - just like that @NW game. Good defense wouldn't have let Gallegos get all those looks, even if he wasn't hitting most of them. Good defense wouldn't have let their guys drive right down the lane with the game on the line. Good defense wouldn't have let their top scorer get off as many open looks. And good defense wouldn't have given up even 50 points to that Nebraska team in a game with that slow of a pace.

I should probably exempt Ingram and probably EE from the above rant, and maybe I should exempt Mbakwe as well, though his energy was near the low end of his high-energy career.

Maybe, just maybe, the coaching has something to do with that. In short-Tubby has grossly underachieved here. I think all of this has been covered many times this season, so no need to rehash it. Fire Tubby is all I'm left with.

Fire Tubby. I have been a supporter, but the last 1:35 was awful. On defense we backed off and let them easily run time off instead of pressuring the ball. When we did stop them, we did not attack. Any decent coach would have noticed something was wrong and called a timeout right away (1:25 left???). We played like the game was tied. Bad defense, bad offense. The stroke is showing.

Seeing how Iverson dropped 29 on 12-12 shooting and Cobbe is lighting up Stanford right now, you gotta wonder how much Tubby stunnted their development.

cant wait to hear the post game press conference notes...

Standard rambling incoherent Tubby in the interview on 1500. Clueless. Says Austin has had migraines and has a far off look in his eyes..............We played bad defense but we played good defense (nothing wrong with the defense). We got the open looks just didn't make the shots (nothing wrong with the offense). Rodney Williams wasn't engaged... no kidding.

You want to compare overall records? I don't care what Monson's Big Ten record was his overall record does not even compare.

I can probably save you some of the trouble...

Tubby: I don't know. We just didn't execute. I don't know.

Players: We're still a good team, things just didn't work tonight.

^^^Seems like it's been a variation of that for most of the losses over the past couple months.

This team has to understand that wins aren't just going to come to them. B1G defenses aren't just going to let them fly up and down the floor. B1G teams prepare for your weaknesses and look to exploit them. 0 fast break points for the Gophers tonight. The half-court inefficiency killed them.

I have a magic elixir for curing all ills. I have never felt better in my life. And I am not sharing.

Blame Tubby for changing the lineup?? If Ingram and Welsh don't play as well as they did we lose by 10.

How much is this guy getting paid?? WOW, good work if you can get it.

There is now no other option to look at. The body of work is in. Six years and he will never have had better than a .500 season in the BT. Six years and he will never have finished above 6th. $12 million and no enthusiasm in the coach and no sign of a clue that he has anything to do with the results.

Good points. They had a lot of possessions where they played extremely hard for 30 seconds of the shot clock, only to allow late penetration and breakdown defensively. They did play hard most of the game, they just played soft at key moments. That's where the ticky-tack fouls came from.

Not saying monson was a great coach my point is tubby has failed at the U. The game has passed him. 7 years and not one above .500 record I'm glad he's padded his win total in the non conference but he's a joke in conference.

Okay it was a great idea to come out with your best player on the bench in a road game. Looks like it worked great. Yes - Ingram played well and Welch was okay but what's the effect on the team? Bottom line- they went out and stunk it up big time and they don't look well coached.

It's just been inconsistent in so many regards all season. Tubby has been trying to mix and match all season, but it's only resulted in a lot of discombobulation. Dutcher had a very telling quote a couple weeks ago saying you can't be experimenting with lineups in February and March.

Amazing how things can change in three hours. That's college basketball though.

I think they started playing tough D with about 11:15 left in the game, and I believe they were down 7 at that point. My rant - which I stand by completely after reading it again :) - comes from the frustration of seeing this team have almost no energy or sense of urgency up until that point, by which time it was full panic mode, and a struggle to win the game was sure to ensue. The way you beat bad teams is by blitzing them and kicking the crap out of them right from the start. Even at halftime I thought maybe we'd see the Gophers come out with a renewed focus in the second half. Nope. This is why I'm so pissed. It wasn't just that shots weren't falling. It's that for most of the game they didn't even try.

We saw massive energy in the Indiana game, we saw massive energy in the Penn State game; and both were good results, pretty much the type of result we all expected when this season began. If you go back to the MSU and Illinois games in Dec/Jan., that energy was there as well. But no one could have predicted that most of the B1G season this team would play like they didn't even care to be there. And right now lack of energy is beating themselves most of this B1G season. Tubby isn't showing fire on the sidelines, but to be honest, he is not the one who has to bring it (though I wish he would) - the players have to WANT it. And they just don't.
