STrib: Gophers' football recruits have growth potential

The most coveted player in Minnesota’s class is Quinn Oseland, an offensive lineman from Springfield, Ill. Among his other reported offers were Oregon, Michigan State, Mississippi State and Oklahoma State.

“Quinn Oseland has potential to be an All-American at Minnesota,” said Tom Lemming, longtime recruiting analyst for CBS Sports Network.

Oseland is 6-6, 310 pounds, which might sound huge for an incoming freshman. But the five offensive linemen in this recruiting class average 6-6, 294. The list includes Red Wing’s Nick Connelly (6-7, 275), Chaska’s Bronson Dovich (6-6, 290), Houston’s Tyler Moore (6-4, 300) and Akron, Ohio’s Ted Stieber (6-6, 295).

KFAN: The Eve of Gophers Signing Day: No Stone Unturned

Minnesota’s coaching staff is approaching its fifth season on campus. They’ve had repeated success with pulling the best out of those who were undervalued. The more that have overachieved, the more they – as a team – have overachieved.

'Overachieving' is simply the product of untraceable opinions – the product of stars.

Recruits try to survive and override a system where stones are thrown both accurately, and inaccurately.

KFAN: Signing Day Q&A: Rivals National Recruiting Analyst Josh Helmholdt on Gophers

Q1: Tim Beckman and Jerry Kill are the only two left in the race for three-star defensive tackle Jamal Milan, who you said is going to be one of the most sought after three-star recruits in the Midwest when today, national signing day, arrives.

Should Gophers fans be envisioning a Steven Richardson and Milan tandem in the future, or has Illinois jumped in front like several reports as of late are indicating?

JH: I expect Minnesota finishes runners-up in the race for Milan. They held the lead at one point, but in this case I see Illinois getting that last official visit as the clinching factor for the Illini keeping the Chicago native at home.

Random musing regarding Clemson University. Has there ever been another program that somehow manages to rank so highly each year in the class star ranking system, but underachieves so greatly on the field relative to that class star ranking? One of the most overrated programs imo. Just saying.
