OFFICIAL 2014 National Signing Day Thread - LOI Updates, Tweets, Links and More

Yes many people would believe it. If you don't then you're naive.

We already know he has to improve his GPA and his ACT. Why do you find this hard to believe?

That's not the point of his question. I think we all believe that Jeff Jones has some work to do, it's been reported all over the place. It's really unlikely that any Gopher "official" is contact with that Tub of Goo Pat Ruesse. He looked on the internet, he wanted to make it seem official, he ate a ton of food and then he pretended he got the information from an "official".

Yep, he's an absolute moron. He has no idea how to sell his show which is why he will either be out of radio or failing in some tiny market in 2 years. Sometimes, you need to pretend a little because your fan base is interested in the subject. Do you think every person on Sportscenter cares a ton about everything in sports? Nope. But certain fans might be tuning in for certain things. So if you can't pretend long enough when you have a guest, those people won't even click back.

It would have taken him a total of 5 seconds to research how big of recruit Jeff Jones is and instead he went out of his way to be a jerk.

You have pretty much hit on what I've said for a long time about the guys from ESPN 1500. With a couple exceptions, they're lazy. They put very little work into the shows and only cover what they want to cover. It's pretty sad that they call themselves a major market radio station because they don't act like one.

I have a little different take that you guys. Judd grew up in Minnetonka and worked at the Strib for 22 years. This isn't about being lazy, it's about not following or being interested in Gopher sports. I'm sure he knew how highly ranked Jones was buy probably assumed Barber was that highly ranked. The casual fans don't realize Barber was a late offer.

If a guy like Zulgad, who grew up here and had enough interest in sports to make a career of it, thinks of the Gophers as an afterthought, what about the rest of the casual fans.

To many people anything other than pro sports is unimportant.

Exactly - I am well aware that Jones has not qualified yet. With all the privacy laws in place today , I just find it hard to believe that anyone officially connected with the U would tell the media ( and especially Reusse ) that a recruit is a long way from being eligible. If Coach Kill would find out who this "official" is , he/she might be looking for a new place to work.

You're exactly right. ESPN 1500 is really bad sports radio. Zulgad is really terrible. He is constantly disinterested, or seems to be, and he really lacks a lot of basic knowledge in many sports.

I always thought Zulgad was the weak-link between he and Dubay.

I'm pretty sure I've heard him say he didn't go to college, too, which probably plays some role in this.

I completely understand someone not being a huge Gopher fan. That isn't my issue with people the likes of Judd. The issue I have with him is that he's not professional at all. He shouldn't be held to the same standard as a casual sports fan. Keep in mind that he is working on 1500, the second most popular sports talk radio station in the area (way behind KFAN). The people tuning into 1500 are much more likely to be die hard fans (or tuning in for a specific reason) than most places in sports reporting. I wouldn't expect Judd to break down the class or make a big deal about it. However, when you have a guest on your show you should be able to ask intelligent questions. Listen to the guys who are on syndication and listen to how they deal with guests. Do you really think they care about everyone they are interviewing? Obviously not. They are able to conduct themselves like professionals, ask good questions and occasionally make a fan or two.

1500 can mock the Gophers as much as they want. However, if they have awful ratings. If they could have some good interviews and occasionally do something other than mock the fan base, it'd be a smart move. Judd can't see that, 1500 can't see that, so it's not shocking that people are losing their jobs over there.

I'm not fan of Ruesse, but one thing I will give him credit for is dropping a bunch of weight. So "Tub of Goo" Pat is no longer the case.

Now- whether an U "official" contacted him is debatable at best. Guess we will see if/when Jones becomes eligible.

"Off the record" comments have been coming from government, business and university sources for years. What is suspicious is why it would be made public; though there have been, for decades now, plenty of "I HATE the football program" people, over at the U. Like Bob says though, no one would be surprised if Ruesse, the guy who infamously stated that "all those kids from Dallas Skyline are THUGS" made up something about a kid from Minneapolis Washburn either.

Patrick just loves to tweak Gopher Football "fanatics" and doesn't give a bleep whether what he says to do it is true or not.

Oh, by the way, all those Skyline kids graduated. Something Mr.Ruesse never did.

PiPress: Top RB recruit Jeff Jones looks forward to competition with starter David Cobb

“It’s great for the program honestly,” he said. “(Cobb’s) the first back in seven years to rush for 1,000 yards. That’s a great step for the running backs coach (Brian Anderson) and the program. I honestly believe competition breeds success. So if I’m there pushing David Cobb everyday, that’s just going to make him rush for 1,500 yards. He’ll break another mark that the Gophers haven’t reached in awhile. I just feel like it’s a great opportunity to come in and compete for a spot right away.”

With such a log jam at the position, the 6-foot, 200-pound Jones also suggested the possibility of playing another position as a freshman just to get on the field. He had 17 catches for 493 yards and eight touchdowns this past season.

“I’m open to playing slot receiver and running back — both of those positions,” Jones said. “I feel like I’m a guy who can get on the field and possibly make plays right away. That’s my goal.”

Shama: Coach Likens Jeff Jones Style to A.P.

Jenkins compares his all-state, Mr. Football award winner to a runner Minnesota sports fans know all about. “His running style is similar to Adrian Peterson. He’s big and strong and fast. I think he may have a little bit better vision. He might have a better first step in terms of his explosion.

“His top-end speed might not be quite as good as Adrian Peterson but in terms of just being dominating and people not wanting to stand in his way and tackle him, he reminds me most of Adrian Peterson with his running style.”

FSN: High-profile Gophers recruit Jones hopes to follow in Hageman's footsteps

Jones hopes to follow Hageman's lead and be a key contributor for the hometown Gophers. During the recruiting process, he and Hageman talked about what to expect if Jones chose Minnesota.

"He liked it there. He said coach Kill helped him out a lot," Jones said. "That staff over there, they took him under their wing and helped change some things around for him."

I'm not disputing what you say. Just saying what stood out to me is a guy that is from the area and a career sports guy takes little interest in the Gophers says a lot about the area. The fact that he is not well enough prepared to do his job is another subject.

This is a nice little piece.

That is a great little piece. You have to like an Alabama kid that chose the Minnesota stocking cap instead of the baseball hat.

Seems like a really bright guy and he is a dynamic football player.

Welcome aboard Jerry!
