Official 2013 Gopher Fall Camp Thread: Updates, Analysis, Links, etc.

per Shama:

Kill said after Saturday’s scrimmage it will be awhile before he decides on his starting punter and kicker. “I think a kid needs to know a week going into a game, or close to three or four days out,” said Kill whose Gophers open the season on August 29 at home against UNLV. “We keep charts of kicks and things like that, and we want to give everybody an opportunity. We don’t have to be in a hurry right now.”

STrib: Gophers receivers are short on stats but long on confidence

“It’s definitely motivating to us to prove people wrong,” Engel said. “Our goal is to lead the Big Ten in receiving. We’ve got to shoot for the stars, if we want to make a run at this thing [as a team].”

PiPress: Gophers football: Senior receiver Victor Keise hopes perseverance pays off

Keise, who is working on his master's degree in Kinesiology, is trying to be a leader. But he also has another reason to be motivated now.

On July 4, his girlfriend gave birth to their baby girl, Riley, who lives with him in an off-campus apartment. He's getting help from his in-laws to raise her right now.

"Coach (Jerry) Kill and I have talked a lot," Keise said. "He's been a big help through this process. I let him know as soon as I found out. Basically, we made sure this was something I could handle, this was something I could take on."

Senior receiver Victor Keise hopes perseverance pays off...

This is another kid I'm really rooting for. I've had a couple of chances to talk to him briefly after practices with my boys, and he seems like a rock-solid guy. If you have ever seen him interviewed, you can tell right away that he is a bright kid, and has a bright future.

JoeChristensen (@JoeCStrib) tweeted at 0:56 PM on Tue, Aug 13, 2013Donovahn Jones has been practicing at both QB and WR since Saturday's scrimmage, #Gophers coach Jerry Kill said today.

Don't worry, jaymil, it is now the difficult time of the year before that first game, where people are picky and pricky. Take it all in fun and we will get thru it.

Don, I hope you didn't take my post as anything but in fun. I obviously knew who he meant and what happened, I just can't pass up the opportunity to give someone a little bit of crap. I am quite sure I have made far worse mistakes in my time posting (just ask Costa Rican Gopher ).

GopherSports: Gopher Secondary Aiming High

Junior Derrick Wells is another returning starter, although he will be at a different position than last fall. He moved from safety to cornerback, and is bigger than both the departing senior starters he will help to replace. Like Vereen, Wells anticipates the defensive backs continuing to build upon last year's improvements.

"I think we are more athletic in the secondary," he said. "We have a lot of speed, a lot of size."

FSN: Gophers secondary inexperienced but talented

The Gophers safety plays with that swagger on the field -- he has 34 games and 23 starts under his belt with Minnesota -- but also talks the talk off the gridiron. When asked Tuesday about how good the Gophers' secondary can be in 2013, Vereen made a statement with confidence.

"To be the best secondary in the Big Ten is our goal," he said. "This year, we 100 percent truly feel that that's possible."

Pig Man, I knew that, I just wanted to add a little fire to this boring time of the year when everyone is antsy and excited, so let's all have a beer (only 9 left on the wall before the Predict the Score Contest starts.)

Then the excitement and real life anticipation will begin.

p.s. Gophers are 14 point favorites.

Unless I missed it, how does that highlight video of Vereen and Wells not include Wells' diving pick @ UNLV? That was like his best play of the year.

That was Cedric Thompson.

Claeys likes his nickelback to be physical so he can blitz from the position. Ryan Collado did well in the role a couple years ago. With Boddy-Calhoun playing well out on the corner it allows us to move Wells down into that nickel spot & unleash him on QB's. The best part is we get all 3 back again next year too.

PiPress: Gophers football: Will freshman Donovahn Jones be used as a QB/WR like MarQueis Gray?

“He’s taking quarterback reps, and then we’re giving him receiver reps, too,” Kill said. “Seeing how he grasps things, he did a pretty good job today.”

Jones is 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds with a 40-inch vertical, so he already has the physical tools to be a potential impact receiver. He seemed natural at running deep routes Saturday but also ran the ball fairly well as a quarterback.

“He’s a unique guy,” Kill said of Jones.

STrib: Gophers' Wells preparing to take on another challenge

But Wells, who still is irked by his under-recruitment, might have left Las Vegas that night a winner in more ways than one.

“I just wanted people to know my name,” Wells said after practice Tuesday. “I wanted to get my name out there and let everyone know, whoever was sleeping on me, that I was a good player and the people I’m around are good players.”
