Official 2013 Gopher Fall Camp Thread: Updates, Analysis, Links, etc.

Start it up!

Okay - I will do it. Does anybody know if all three first practices will be without full pads? I know that there are NCAA rules that govern when you can practice for the first time with full pads but I don't know if it is after two or three practices.

Shooter Now: Gophers' Ra'Shede Hageman stretches for success

Gophers defensive lineman Ra'Shede Hageman, who is projected as a second-round pick for next spring's NFL draft, said stretching during workouts has improved his technique.

"It helps me stay low, be more flexible," said the 6-foot-6, 315-pound senior who will turn 23 next week.

Hageman said he bench-pressed 465 pounds last winter.

"In my opinion, I've gotten a lot stronger (since then) and I can show it on the field," he said.

PiPress: Gophers football: Ra'Shede Hageman is growing on and off the field

As the Gophers open fall camp Friday, Hageman's development as a team leader will be on display. His maturity off the field was apparent this summer when the former Washburn standout spoke to kids at places like Kennedy and McRae Park in Minneapolis, where he once played as a youth.

"I just wanted to share my story and really just give little kids an open perspective of who I am off the field," Hageman said. "It was different because in past years, I really wasn't doing much community service."

Hageman spoke publicly this offseason more than ever about his struggles with academics and attitude in college -- and about his emotional childhood before being adopted 16 years ago by his current parents, Eric Hageman and Jill Coyle.

STrib: Gophers football: Goals get higher in Year 3 under Kill

That said, Kill keeps calling this year’s incoming freshman class his “second recruiting class,” even though it’s technically his third.

“You have to learn the culture of a school and the state,” Kill said. “It took us a little while at Southern Illinois to figure out how we were going to recruit there, and at Northern, and the same thing at Minnesota. We’ve got a pretty good take on where we’re at right now.”

My Suburban Life: Andrew Harte aims to be starting kicker for Minnesota football

Andrew Harte doesn’t plan on taking the traditional route of most college freshmen.

On campus at the University of Minnesota since June 10, the Downers Grove resident and former Montini football player plans to be on the field when the Gophers kick off their football season Aug. 29 against UNLV. If things go according to plan and Harte avoids sitting out the season with a redshirt, he could be the one doing the kicking in that game.

per Sid:

Linebacker depth at U

Jerry Kill recently talked about how his Gophers football team has a number of athletically gifted players at linebacker. Now they just need to hone their skills.

“The good thing is I’ll tell you that probably our strongest leader on our defensive side of the football, and has done a great job with our players this summer, is in our linebacking crew,” Kill said. “[Redshirt senior] Aaron Hill has done a great job. We expect great things. I think Aaron is going to have a tremendous year and we’re excited about him.

“[Senior] James Manuel is a young man who played a lot of minutes for us last year. He is bigger, stronger and faster, has had a great summer and a very good spring. I think athletically he’s definitely what we’re looking for. Then inside with [redshirt freshman] Jack Lynn and [junior] Damien Wilson and [redshirt sophomore] Jephte Matilus, there’s some depth there inside. I thought Damien and Jack Lynn were neck-and-neck in the spring, thought they both did some good things.

“From the outside standpoint with [Chris] Wipson coming in, De’Niro Laster coming in, [Dominic] Schultz, who was here during the spring and did a good job, Nick Rallis had a good spring. I think we may have more depth than we think. We just have to get out there and, number one, stay healthy at that position.

“Athletic-wise, [redshirt sophomore] De’Vondre Campbell is another one. I think De’Vondre is [6-5, 225]. We’ll look the part. We just need to be able to play it.”

per Shama:

Ryan Santoso, the Gophers freshman punter and kicker who is on scholarship, had 46 touchbacks in 48 kickoffs at Pace High School in Pace, Florida. Walk-on freshman kicker Justin Juenemann made 80 percent of his career field goal attempts of between 40 and 50 yards at Phillipsburg High School in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

1500: Q&A with 'U' OC Matt Limegrover: Offense starting to form new identity

On Edwards ...

"Freshmen are complete wild cards. You can know what he did as a high school football player, you can look at what he did running the 100-meter dash in the state championship or the 55-meters, you can look at all those things and say, 'OK, he has all the makings.' But you've got to make sure when you put the kid in and you want to get him the ball that he is lined up on the right side. This is what happened with Rodrick Williams last year. We couldn't keep him in on pass protection, because he wasn't getting it. Then it was tough, because for as good as he could be in our offense and what we got to, it was tough to keep him in because you didn't want to be showing your hand. It isn't hard for a (graduate assistant) or a quality control guy breaking down film to go, 'Hey, coach, when 35 is in there tell everyone to think run first. Tell those safeties to make sure that they really see the quarterback clear with that ball, because 35 is going to get the ball because you can tell that they're not real fired up about him being in there.

"Same thing with Berkley. Can we utilize him as a complete player? Maybe it's a small package. Maybe instead of having the responsibility of running nine different run plays in three different alignments, we're going to line you up here and we're going to run two runs and we're going to have three protections and we're going to have a screen. But he has to be competent at all of those. So as we go along, if we feel like we can get that package and compartmentalize for a kid and showcase his skills, I think Berkley has the physical tools to be that guy. So now it's how much does he retain from the summer work those guys are doing on their own and how much can he take when we put the pads and those guys are on the other side chirping at him and wanting a piece of him."

I know David Cobb had trouble with blocking techniques/schemes and was told until he mastered this he wouldn't be seeing much playing time. I heard that he has gotten the message.
