Official 2013 Class Recruiting Updates Thread

I once heard an interview with Lou Holtz where he stated he always looked hard at HS QB's because they were nearly always the most talented kid on the team. Especially at smaller schools.

Most times the smartest as well.

Makes sense when you think about it. Unless you are one of the schools that is lucky enough to have a great QB and great skill players most high school teams want their best overall ahtlete to touch the ball as much as possible. You look down the bios of a lot of players at the D1 level and they played QB at some point during their high school career. Heck Anthony Montgomery who played DT for us what a high school QB.

I once heard Lou Holtz say to a gathering that he was not leaving The U until we went to a Rose Bowl.

Yeah...I hate him.

If you missed it, Louisiana LB Duke Riley (@1Goal1Dream) told me following a visit from #Gopher coaches, that #Minnesota is very much in it.

I thought we were out of it for Riley, I'd love to be wrong.

I was just about to ask who. What did he mean by "wanted to"...,why didn't they offer?

According to him they were talking to his coach and he told his coach to tell them that he wasn't interested.

here's the quote:

"Nebraska called my coach and wanted to offer me, and wanted to see me this week. I told my coach I wasn't really interested," Peppers added. "I wouldn't flip at all. I'm set for Minnesota."

I love this kid already.

Interesting time during the recruiting process...a lot of top programs are moving on their plan Bs right now and schools like us have a lot of helmet schools plan Bs committed. Its amazing we don't lose more recruits.

Good thing is...Kill is used to recruiting everyone's plan Bs and Cs in MAC and he knows how to hold onto his kids and steal a few that don't want to be somebody's plan B.

I just became an even bigger Peppers fan.

I just watched Peppers' Senior reel again. This kid is a beast!
I hadn't seen any senior year video yet so had to take a look. He does look like a beast.

This will be a nail biting week. Hope these helmet school fall flat on plan B.

Tom Lemming on Jerry Kill's recruiting

Per the article from the Strib "Jerry Kill’s a very good recruiter," Lemming said. "That’s why Northern Illinois did so well this year; all those guys were his starters. And I think he knows where to get talent. If it’s not in Minnesota -- I know he’ll go there first, but the fact is, if it’s not Minnesota, it’s Illinois or Florida or something."

It appears that Tom has a higher regard for Jerry's recruting that some people here. Maybe Tom doesn't subcribe to Scout. Click on the link below to read more about what he had to say.

"[Notre Dame recruit] James Onwualu is a very good player; after that, there’s a lot of question marks with everybody," he said. "Normally Minnesota’s better than Wisconsin, Iowa and Indiana even. So this seems to be bad.

Well this nice to hear from a fellow who knows recruiting.

Shocking that a guy from Illinois would show bias towards people with Illinois ties. Lemming has actually been called out on his bias in the past by coaches like Gary Barnett in fact. Cannot recall another evaluator being called out by name like he has. He tends to favor and inflate his coaching friends classes. Lemming is a clown IMO. His evaluations are no better than Scout, the only difference is you like what he had to say. Tom loves his Notre Dame and Illinois boys.

Maybe it exists but I would challenge you to find an example of Lemming not praising a coaches recruiting class. Seems like every comment from this guy is over the top in its praise no matter who it is directed at but maybe I am not looking hard enough.

Let us not forget, Lemmings makes his living selling recruiting services to D1 coaches...probably not a good idea to disparage them at any point.

I did find it amusing that many of you rightly pointed out these recruiting service guys have their agendas and flaws while others of you here seem to believe Scout assessments are to be trusted.

Lemming could be right or wrong, but he was one of Brewster's biggest boosters when it came to recruiting. I can't recall Lemming ever saying anything bad about anyone.

I trust the assessment of multiple evaluators like Scout and Rivals over that of one guy (Lemming) who has been called out for being biased in the past. I also trust the numerous BCS coaching staffs and when they pass on a guy, I take notice of that.

I agree! Me too!

I trust film as much as anythig else if I can find it, even though I don't claim to be some kind of talent scout.

#Vandy grabbing Florida RB Matt Dayes is good news for #Gophers as Vandy was going to offer Rapheal Webb next.

Rivals and Scout loved Brews first class too. Didn't translate to wins. Lemming is often called out because he about the only evaluator that people know. What other talent evaluators do you know by name?

One thing about Kill. He looks for a certain type of player with a certain attitude which may or may not be evident in tape analysis. MN is not going to out-recruit many programs right now. How can you put faith into talent evaluators that grade based on offers?

An example in basketball is Damien Lillard. He played in Oakland where everyone could see him. No great offers. One from Boise State (not a basketball power). Goes to Weber State and now is the best rookie in the NBA.

In my estimation, a class full of 3 stars gives you a chance with good coaching. Let's hope Jerry can coach them up.

You have identified and interesting topic that I wished I understood better, i.e. the use of film in evaluating players. One can certainly learn from film but what is the best way to do this? I am also sure the strength of the opponent needs to be factored in the evaluation but again how do you do that. If anybody has any insights on this topic please feel free to give them.
