Official 2013 Class Recruiting Updates Thread

According to rivals, both Cobb and Foreman had offers from other BCS schools. Cobb: Stanford and Memphis, Foreman: Baylor. It's not like these guys were nobodies with no other offers.

Correct. I believe Foreman was actually committed to a BCS school his JR year (maybe Colorado?), but got hurt and had the scholarship pulled.

Just said on the webcast that Wolitarsky is announcing during this game some time.

Wolitarsky and other players doing taped segment at halftime. Most announced their schools but he did not.

Bob - I am curious why you are in favor of grayshirting a player or two. It seem to me that it only makes since if the grayshirt players are players you really want and you don't think that there will be better players available next year. This is especially true If they are marginal players. That is because you are at a high risk of wasting or tying up a scholarship for several years in the future.

It has always been my opinion that Brewster wasted several scholarship by signing marginal players after national signing day because he still had some available slots. These players are still on the team and are unlikely to contribute ever. I would rather see the scholarships go to a walk-on because it will help that program and you can use that scholarship the next year without tying up a scholarship for maybe five years.

Two things that I do like about the use of a grayshirt is that it allows a player to mature a little more and also to go through spring football without losing a year eligibility. I expect that you have a perspective that may shed some light on this topic that I haven't thought about. Your thought would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think it's a matter of those players being marginal Big 10 players.

For instance, take Duke Anyanwu last year. He is a guy who I probably would have preferred grey shirting last season. I completely understand why they didn't. My reasoning is that Duke was so young for his grade and we knew we wanted him to grow a lot for his college position. Duke was not able to be on the 105 man roster and his main goal this year was getting healthy and big. I think it would have been nice if we could have found a way to not burn a year of eligibility on him in that context. Now, I'm not saying that he's marginal. In fact, I think he's an excellent football player. I just think he's the kind of guy that will be better down the road than right away.

This year, I think Wipson is in a similar situation. He is coming off a big injury. However, I think he's going to be a very good LBer for the U. It'd be perfect if he could rehab his injury this year and get bigger without wasting a year of eligibility.

In general, it just comes down to getting another 1/2 year of football reps for these kids. They'll get another spring ball. They'll get another 1/2 year (at least) of college weight lifting. I think Duke and Wipson will both be good football players for the U, I just think they'd be much better at 22/23 than at 18/19 (Duke was 17 when school started).

Actually these were not the guys I was referring to. Gopherprof made the reference to them, not me. I don't like posting negative comments about players but since there is some confusion I will gave you the name of two of them, i.e. Logan Hutton and Cameron Wilson

I believe Hutton actually came in on signing day, but I agree with the general point. Dexter Foreman is the same type of kid as Cameron Wilson though....Foreman "committed" to an offer from Colorado that was never there. He came in well after signing day (like Wilson) and doesn't seem to be in the plans at all. Brewster recruited well until he didn't get a "real" extension after back to back 3-5 Big Ten seasons.

+1 The operative word is patience. There is a reason why Kill's contract is for seven years. I have always wondered if people like Grant realize what it takes to turn a program like Minnesota's around. Kill is doing all the right things to accomplish that. The good news is that there are becoming fewer and fewer people like Grant and more and more people who understand how Kill is building the program and the progress that is being made. Just like he has done everywhere else.

One or the things that I find really encouraging this year is how he has recruited several Minnesota recruits to walk on when they could have earned a scholarships somewhere else. They obviously believe in him even though Grant doesn't. I think I prefer it this way than the other way around.

Well I certainly think we should exercise patience as well. I do believe Kill and staff are good coaches and have a plan in place to rebuild. I'm in no way convinced it will work or that these recruits will be anything special, but I'm going to watch the games either way. There certainly will come a point where a lack of top end talent will be a ceiling to the team. Hopefully we have some success before then that allows us to start nabbing a player or two that can take us over the top. I do love when everyone throws in the Boise and TCU references. What you need to remember is they were playing in bad conference where they could pile up wins with their occasional 4 star players. We're in the Big Ten and we need to compete against rosters filled with 4 and 5 star players. So that comparison isn't worth snot in my book. Anyway, next year will be really interesting recruiting wise and record wise. I want to see if we can improve on this year's record or if well fall back to a 3 or 4 win team.

They also beat really good teams in bowl games and BTW Boise State plays a pretty tough non-conference, they played 2012 -Michigan State, 2011 - Georgia, 2010 - Va Tech, 2009 - Oregon.

That is very true. They did have really good teams. While it cannot ever be proven, it is highly doubtful they would have had undefeated or one loss seasons had they been in the Big Ten/SEC/Big 12 etc. All that said, I'd be happy with their level of talent.

Wonder if this takes the Wolitarsky commitment into play? Still not a good trend to see and yes I know rankings are not everything but not encouraging to see us being way out recruitied (on paper) by the schools ware supposed to be competting with.

Did scheduled visits on 1-25-13 by TE Nate Wozniak & RB Raphael Webb actually take place?

Yes. Webb took a photo of he and Nate in the locker room, so that's about as solid evidence as you can get.

Webb was supposed to announce his commitment tonight, but that has apparently been pushed back.

He said he will announce on Wednesday.

Josh Helmholdt on 1500 at 2:40 to talk recruiting. He is the midwest rivals guy, loves berkley edwards so it will be interesting to hear how he will battle the negative slant that is surely the plan from 1500's side of things...
