Nate Mason Commits to Gophers

[SUP][/SUP]
Mason had offers from Kansas State, Virginia, Marquette, Clemson, La Salle, Providence, SMU, Harvard, and Lehigh among others...
Big time get for us!

Quality player but I would say a "big time get" is stretching it. Travis or Vaughn would be big time, IMO...

Big time for other programs, probably not, for us, I think you could say it is quite significant. (Especially compared to what we've gotten the past 2 yrs in Ellenson, Buggs, McNeil, etc)

Sid's first breaking news was the signing of James Naismith

Hey, had it not been for Sid, the game of basketball would never have been invented. That is what James Naismith told me.

Playing for one of the elite AAU teams of the summer Mason played along side guys like Theo Pinson (5-star, North Carolina commit), LJ Peak (4-star Georgetown), Gary Clark (3-star, Cincy), Shelton Mitchell (4-star, Wake). But Mason didn't just play "with" those guys, he was a focal point. In the Peach Jam title game Mason scored the team's second most points (21) and lead the team with 7 assists to just 2 turnovers. In an earlier game CP3 faced Howard Pulley and won 90-73 and Mason's line was 19 points, 5 assists and 3 turnovers against the Tyus Jones led Panthers.

I'm glad he played a great game against Pulley. He may have left a good enough impression on Reid that his commitment to the Gophers might make us more appealing.

Can't believe I missed this among all the football. Great news!

My general take is that he's a scrappy, undersized guy, who's a score-first, ball handler. Could turn into a poor man's Bobby Jackson for lack of a better reference.

The fact that he played so well among the very top competition this summer calms my fears over his lack of offers. This kid has proven that he can play with Tyus, Reid & that caliber of player.

Is anyone concerned about the low release point on Mason's shot? Granted, I've only watched a few highlights, so I don't know much about his game. It's just one thing that struck me.

Don't worry. Christian Ponder said that his low release point is "easily correctable".

I wonder if young Rick is thinking Mason is like Russ Smith, who he watched up close while on the Louisville staff. About the same size.

Mason actually reminds me a little bit of Dre Hollins. A scoring combo guard, not really a true PG. He's a little smaller though. One of the Gopher 247 guys said a few national scouts have told him they think Mason is very underrated. Solid get. I think Carlos Morris will be next.

If Tyus surprises everyone and commits to the Gophers, does Mason rescind his verbal?

Agree. Smaller but a better ball handler.

2014 video shows a much higher release point than his underclassmen videos. I see it as a non factor....

Know who he reminds me of? Justin Cobbs.....

Yep. Hollins was similarly rated until his senior year when he dropped 40+ on Findley. Mason may have a little better handle than Hollins did at that point.

Wow! Huge get, and great looking player. I've been as excited about his highlight tape as anyone's on our list save Whitehead and Vaughn. I'm pretty dang jacked right now. Things are looking way up.

I would in no means call this a "Huge get." Reid Travis would be a "Huge get" and so would Vaughn (obviously). Pitino appears to be building a foundation of "underrated," "four-year"-three star recruits. I hope the big splash is coming soon. Mason appears to be a legit Division I baller, but nothing that is going to turn a program around. He is a run-of-the-mill recruit outside the top 100-150. I'm sure someone is going to call me out and begin with the personal attacks and tell me "stars don't matter," but they do. I'm not even going to open the dialogue on that topic since it's been pounded into the ground on this site in the past.
But, again, I'd like to make it clear: I believe Mason could be a solid player, but this program needs something to get excited about: A top 100, 4 or 5 star athlete that can become the cornerstone of this team for the next couple years. Mason, though solid, is not that playeR ON PAPER.

I agree. I'm glad we have him, but he's not a game-changer on paper. He could be a game-changer, but solid 3-star recruits don't typically light the world on fire.

If someone is only here one year, can they really be credited with "turning the program around"?

I agree I need to exercise restraint on the word "huge," but Mason is an underrated 3*, and based on the tapes I've seen, in my mind he's just as good as some of these 4* players we've been in the mix for. He's no "run of the mill" player.

Victor Oladipo, Joseph Bertrand, Reggie Hearn, Jordan Hulls, John Shurna, Ben Brust and others disagree.
Now I'm not saying Mason will turn out to be the second coming or anything like that, but a ranking does not determine one's impact in college.

From what I've seen on his tape, in his mind he is a 5*. He doesn't seem to lack confidence in his ability. And that may be a good thing.

You're absolutely wrong. Rankings are highly correlated with college production. Higher rated prospects generally do better than lower rated prospects. Lower ranked players can certainly have better careers than higher ranked players, but that's not generally the case. Thus, I would rather have a a four or five star player than a three star player in almost all circumstances.
